What can I see and experience on a guided tour?

Friendly museum staff in period clothing will welcome you to the Herring Museum. A guided tour promises a unique insight into what life was like in the herring town 150 years ago. You will discover that the lives of the rich and poor were vastly different, and their stories are told through the voices of a servant girl/boy and a mistress of the house.


You can soak up the historic atmosphere and take a look at a number of the buildings on your own.


What can I see in the museum?

The museum boasts different types of buildings that depict the living and working conditions in the town that was built on herring fisheries. Among other things, you can experience the homes of people with humble means, a herring saltery, a large building with several historical boats, a grocery shop and a prayer house.


The open-air museum is beautifully situated by the sea and is an inviting place to visit, offering activities for children and adults alike.


What does the museum offer other than guided tours?

The area in which the historic buildings are set is a great place to play and a wonderful place to take the family. The open-air museum offers activities for children of all ages. There is also a small museum shop with a simple café, and the museum has its own car park with plenty of spaces for visitors.


Where can I buy tickets?

Tickets can be purchased in the information building and include a guided tour of the buildings. It's also possible to explore a number of the buildings on your own. Guided tours start every hour on the hour. Tickets include admission to two of Haugalandmuseet's museums within 48 hours. Visit www.haugalandmuseet.no for an overview of the museum's departments.

What are the opening hours?

Dokken open-air Museum, the Herring Museum in Haugesund, is open during the season. During spring and autumn, the museum is open on Thursdays. During summer, the museum is open daily:


Opening hours spring and autumn (11 April–16 June and 12 August–29 September): Thursdays: 10:00–14:00. Guided tours start every hour on the hour: at 11:00, 12:00 and 13:00

Opening hours summer (17 June–11 August) daily: 10.00–15.00. Guided tours start every hour on the hour: at 11:00, 12:00, 13:00 and 14:00.


How long does it take to walk from the Church of Our Saviour (Vår Frelsers kirke) to the Herring Museum?

The Herring Museum in Dokken on Hasseløy is situated 850 metres from the Church of Our Saviour, in the centre of Haugesund. It takes about 15 minutes to walk at a relaxed pace. Stop at Hasseløy Bridge on the way and take some amazing photos of the museum and Haugesund from the sea.
