The Østfold Museums – Borgarsyssel Museum in Sarpsborg invites you to experience Østfold's history in living surroundings.

The museum is beautifully situated by the ruins of St. Nicholas' Church from the 1100s and has been an important cultural-historical gathering point in the region since 1921.

In the open-air museum, you can walk among antiquarian buildings from all over Østfold and gain insight into how people lived and worked in the past – from farming communities to civil servants and industrial work. The green museum area forms an atmospheric setting for both learning, experiences and historical wonder.

Dive into the story of Rasmus Sørnes and his unique astronomical clock, and experience Borgarsyssel's oldest exhibition in the Stonemason's Hall – with medieval art such as the figure of St. Olav and the enthroned Mary. See Norwegian author Thorbjørn Egner's historical reliefs made for Sarpsborg's anniversary in 1939.

Olavshallen serves as an arena for exhibitions and events throughout the year. When the museum is open, you can take a seat in the museum café. The museum also has a comprehensive museum shop with gift items and products with local roots.

Several of the museum's buildings and outdoor areas can be rented for meetings, commemorations and cultural events in historic surroundings. See our website for more information about rentals.
