Norway`s largest, most important and most venerable border fortress.

Fredriksten is located in the eastern curtain wall of Fredriksten Fortress and offers insight into Halden’s military history and life at the fortress from the 17th century until the dissolution of the union in 1905.

On the ground floor, you’ll find the reception and museum shop, where you can also get information about what’s happening at the museum. The historical exhibitions extend over several floors and present key periods and turning points in the region’s military history.

The Great Downfall

Travel back to the year 1700, when the young King Charles XII leads Sweden into the Great Northern War. Follow the story up to his death at Fredriksten — a dramatic turning point in Scandinavian history. From the museum, you can also follow Charles XII’s path down to Halden town center and meet historical figures who share their relationship with the king.

Almost Half of Norway – Bohuslän and 1658

The Treaty of Roskilde turned Halden into a border town. People and landscapes were divided, and the town suddenly found itself exposed to enemy attacks. This exhibition highlights the dramatic consequences of the shifting border.

Power Carved in Stone – The Building of Fredriksten

Construction of Fredriksten began in 1661 and continued for several decades. Here, you gain insight into how farmers, townspeople, and soldiers were put to work building the fortress that would defend the border.

Fear and Honor – 1814

In August 1814, the fortress was under siege. Although it was never captured, Swedish troops took banners and weapons as spoils of war. Today, you can see some of these objects — returned to Fredriksten after more than 200 years.

Union at the Border

At the top of the museum, in the former water tower, the story of the years leading up to the dissolution of the union in 1905 is presented. From here, you also get a panoramic view of Halden — and a closer look at one of the large Schneider cannons from the period just before 1905.
