Experience Lihesten in Hyllestad - one of the most iconic landmarks in The Fjord Coast and Sunnfjord and a popular hiking destination with stunning views.
Spectacular Lihesten, 777 masl., is a famous landmark on the coast and probably one of the most photographed mountains in the region. The mountain has many trail and you can spend days exploring them. Lihesten is also popular for mountain climbing.
The starting point is at Lekva in beautiful Lifjorden in Hyllestad. You start the hike by following the forest road all the way until you reach the wooden footbridges. Afterwards, there is a marked trail with red markers to 3 L – stølane and Gygrekjeften. You will walk on sherpa stairways up to the plateau of Lihesten, and from here can choose whether to hike to Risnesnipa or Gygrekjeften. Both trails are marked with red markers. Plan to spend about 3 hours hiking up, whether you choose Risnesnipa or Gygrekjeften. You should expect to spend around 3 to 4 hours on the ascent, whether you choose to hike to Risnesnipa or Gygrekjeften.
There are toilets at 3 L – stølane. The hike to the top of Lihesten is physically demanding.
It is also possible to walk up Risnesnipa from Hovlandstien. You can either choose to park at Lekva, or continue along Lifjorden until you reach a small car park on the left, under a tree. From the car park, walk back a little until you see the sign up. The trail is great with varied terrain. Here you will walk through the forest in the first part, before reaching a more open terrain with magnificent views of Lifjorden. The trail can be quite steep in the first part, but once you've reached the ridge of Lihesten, the hike climbs to the top. Here we recommend spending plenty of time up the mountain. Both to enjoy the view, a good packed lunch, and to drink plenty of water.
When hiking in the mountains, it is important to be well prepared – especially as the weather can change quickly. Always bring warm clothing, a windproof and waterproof jacket, a hat and gloves, even on fine summer days. Good hiking boots, a map or GPS, enough food and water, as well as a small backpack with extra wool layers, a first aid kit and a fully charged mobile phone will make your trip both safer and more comfortable.
Being prepared for changing weather can make the difference between a great experience and an unnecessarily demanding hike. It is important to read and follow the Mountain Safety Rules before setting out.
