










Just a short walk from the centre of Arendal you will find KUBEN, a lively museum where you can explore the rich history of Arendal and the surrounding region!
KUBEN is part of Aust Agder Museum and Archives and is located in one of Norway’s most modern museum and archive buildings at Langsæ in Arendal. The museum offers experiences for all ages. Explore both permanent and temporary exhibitions that spark curiosity and offer new perspectives. Admission is free for children under 18.
At KUBEN you will also find a museum shop and a cosy café where you can enjoy a cup of coffee, freshly made doughnuts or a light lunch. On weekends and during the summer, freshly baked waffles are served – perfect for a relaxing break.

Permanent exhibitions at KUBEN:
Enslaved
The story of the slave ship Fredensborg is both local and global. The ship sank off Tromøy in 1768 and was rediscovered more than 200 years later in 1974. The exhibition displays many artefacts recovered from the wreck, offering a unique insight into one of the world’s most documented slave ships. QR codes provide access to an audio guide.
Signs of Life
Travel through the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age in the Agder region, from the first settlers to the end of the Viking Age. The exhibition features spectacular archaeological discoveries and several interactive activities for children. QR codes provide access to an audio guide.
Childhood
A favourite for visitors of all ages. Travel through childhood in the decades 1910, 1960 and 1990 and try activities such as milking a cow, raising sails, singing skipping rhymes or dressing up. A playful and nostalgic exhibition for the whole family.
The Arendal Crash of 1886
When Arendal was hit by a dramatic financial crash in 1886, the city was turned upside down. The exhibition explores what really happened. Was it bad investments, fraud or forgery? Discover the story behind one of Norway’s biggest financial scandals.
Arne Vinje Gunnerud Sculpture Collection
A beautiful collection of sculptures by the Arendal artist Arne Vinje Gunnerud, showcasing the breadth of his artistic work.
The White Sails
Explore dramatic stories from the era when Norway was the world’s third largest maritime nation and Southern Norway was the centre of sailing ships. A powerful exhibition about courage, drama and maritime heritage.
Merdøgaard Museum
Merdøgaard Museum on the island of Merdø, in the beautiful archipelago outside Arendal, is well worth a visit. The museum is part of KUBEN and consists of an authentic coastal farm with a skipper’s house from 1736, preserved with original interiors and objects from around 1800.
The museum is open daily during the summer. Guided tours are offered several times a day by guides in historical costumes, creating an atmospheric and educational experience for the whole family. Entry is only possible through guided tours.
Tickets for Merdøgaard are released online in May and may also be purchased upon arrival if places are available. At the museum area you will also find a lovely beach and a small café – perfect for a summer day by the sea.
