Experience true Arctic wilderness! An experience for life and a special way of travelling in the Arctic! Together with our local and knowledgeable guide and our top trained huskies.
On this tour you will learn and experience what Svalbard really can offer in terms of experiences off the beaten track. You will learn dog sledding, and you will get your own dog team to get to know and take care of during this adventure. In addition, you will get experience with winter outdoor activities in demanding conditions.
Experience how you and your team of dogs becomes one, as you travel between narrow valleys, over wide glaciers, up mountains and down on the sea ice. Feel how the dogs increase the speed on old trails, and how they slowly work their way forward in the deep untouched snow.
Besides the time we spend on the sled, we’ll enjoy the camping life, good dinners, long breakfasts and lunchbreaks in the sun. Our guests share tents (2-3 guests per tent), and we have a bigger heated tent for meals and social gatherings.
Arctic Husky Travellers will ensure that this long trip will be a memory for life. We have over 20 years of experience with dog sledding and expeditions in the Arctic. We have run the longest dog sled races in Alaska and Europe, and travelled several times to the North Pole by dog sled.
You need no previous experience from dog sledding to attend, but you should be in average to good physical condition. Weather in the Arctic is unpredictable and can change within a few hours. With both the cold and the wind the temperatures can quickly drop to -15°C also in May, but normally the first week of May in Svalbard is the best time for pleasant winter travelling and camping with 24 hours of daylight, still good snow conditions and often nice and sunny weather.
Daily schedule:
Day 0 - Arrival in Longyearbyen. Guests need to arrange their own accommodation this night. We will pick you up at your accommodation in town at 18:00 and return you to town a couple of hours later. Visit the kennel, and review of the trip plan, equipment, and procedures.
Day 1 - Transport out to the kennel after breakfast. Preparation of equipment and packing sleds with everything needed to be out in the wilderness for five days. Departure in the direction of the East Coast. Day 1 we will visit an ice cave on our way to our wilderness cabin Reinheim. Here we will spend the evening getting used to life in the wilderness and the daily routines with the dogs while enjoying the facilities in our cabin with a sauna and great views.
Day 2-5 - Trip to the East Coast. Route adapted to the weather and snow conditions. On the East Coast, we will spend some time exploring the area. This is the Polar Bear’s kingdom, with beautiful glacier fronts and ice sculptures on the sea ice. We will sleep in tents and if we wish we can spend the last night in Reinheim on our way back.
Day 6 – The final leg back to Longyearbyen and our dog yard. We will do a short summary of the tours highlights and say a tearful goodbye to the dogs.
Included: Tour arrangements, all necessary equipment, accommodation, and meals according to the program. Transportation to and from your hotel in Longyearbyen. Extreme clothing: expedition pants, insulated anorak, boots, mittens, working gloves and a hat.
Not included: Flight to / from Svalbard, transfer to/from airport, drinks, accommodation in Longyearbyen (but we can help with finding hotel rooms at affordable prices).
More information and a packing list will be sent by e-mail closer to the departure of the expedition.
