Dokken open-air museum is situated only a ten-minute walk from downtown Haugesund. The tiny community on the small island Bakarøynå is today an idyllic representation of the way people lived during the period 1850 -1950. The site is close to the waterfront. Some of the houses are dwellings, but there is also a large sea-house, a combined dwelling and industrial building with a cooper's workshop and a herring saltery. Another sea-house contains the museum's collection of old, wooden tree-boats. The community also has an old-fashioned grocer's shop and the meetinghouse Zion.

By visiting the museum and listening to the guides you will get to know the history of Haugesund. The museum area is open to all. In the reception there is a museum shop and a small kiosk. The museum offers different sorts of activities to families with children, such as boat workshops, borrowing of fishing gears and safety vests.
