Drakkar Wooden sculpture - a "must-see" art piece when visiting Vardø

Book

“Drakkar/Leviathan” – is a story about sea, people migrations, myths, ships, historical events, wood and whales. It is an anthem to the Arctic, human and nature!

The sculpture was built during the summer in 2016 by Taibola Assemble team from Arkhangelsk/Severodvinsk on this desolate rock on Vardø island.

> From the artists themselves:
Last summer we were in the land of midnight sun where we built a huge wooden sculpture which is called “Drakkar/Leviathan”. Our giant keeps watch and ward of the strait between Vardø island and mainland. By the way, name of the strait is translated from Norwegian as “big Viking ship”. This place is connected to many legends as well as in first written notice of Kingdom of Norway in British annals. “Drakkar/Leviathan” – is a story about sea, people migrations, myths, ships, historical events, wood and whales. It is an anthem to the Arctic, human and nature!

You can drive and park nearby or if you like to walk it is an easy walk from downtown Vardø. No entrance fee and open 24/7 every day.

Welcome to Varanger Arctic Norway

In the far north and as far east as you can go in Norway, where the sky meets the sea, lies Varanger, bathed in the midnight sun and the northern lights of winter. Here the wild landscape meanders through bird-nesting cliffs, fishing villages, and rugged headlands – out to the end of the world.
Nature offers rivers teeming with fish, snow-clad plains, exotic king crabs, birds breeding in spring, leaping salmon, the shining sea, and dancing northern lights. People and traditions make Varanger an Arctic melting pot of communities and cultures. Varanger is a different experience. Scenery and settlements, the light, the colours, the lofty sky and wide horizon, exciting activities and the open people.
