Experience masterpieces from Norwegian art history by Edvard Munch, Harriet Backer, Nikolai Astrup, and J. C. Dahl, and explore exciting new exhibitions.
Kode is one of the Nordic region's largest museums for art, crafts, design, and music.
Rasmus Meyers:
The collection of businessman Rasmus Meyer has given its name to a small jewel of a museum from 1924. Over two floors, you wander through the golden age of Norwegian art history, from 1880 to 1905 and onwards to 1920.
Today, Kode and Bergen are home to the world’s third largest Edvard Munch collection.
The Kode collection consists of more than 100 works on paper and 50 paintings. It originates from the collection Rasmus Meyer built up in the early 20th century, in close collaboration with the artist himself.
The collection was intended to follow Munch's artistic development, and covered all the various phases of Munch's artistry up to then.
The museum's collection of Munch's pictures has since been increased with Bergen Billedgalleri's purchases, and not least with Rolf Stenersen's gift to Bergen in 1971.
Lysverket:
The building also houses the restaurant Lysverket, which has a star in the Michelin guide.
There are currently no exhibitions.
Lysverket reopens in November 2026 with a large modernism exhibition and in December a large silver exhibition arrives.
Stenersen:
Stenersen is the newest of the four art museums, built in 1978. The museum takes its name from the collector and financier Rolf Stenersen. On the building’s second floor we show changing exhibitions.
There are currently no exhibitions here.
On 31 October 2026 Stenersen reopens with the major exhibition: Gardar Eide Einarsson.
Permanenten:
Permanenten is a monumental building in neo-Renaissance style, designed by architect Henry Bertram Bucher and erected in 1896. The building houses changing exhibitions.
There are currently no exhibitions here. Reopens spring 2027.
Accessibility:
Rasmus Meyer and Permanenten accessible to visitors with mobility impairments, with direct access via ramps or lifts.
