Utvær, located 8 km west of Ytre Sula, is the name of the group of islands furthest west in Norway, with the westernmost lighthouse in the country.
Utvær is Norway’s westernmost group of islands and home to the country’s westernmost lighthouse. With its fascinating history and dramatic coastal scenery, Utvær offers a unique experience on the edge of the open sea. The views from the top of the lighthouse are spectacular!
Every Saturday from late June to mid-August, you can join a guided lighthouse safari.
Dates and tickets for 2027 will be announced soon.
What is the Lighthouse Safari to Utvær?
On Utvær, you will follow the North Sea Trail around the island with a guide. Along the way, you can see the remains of a chapel that was moved from Utvær in 1718, as well as marks left by sword sharpening.
The trail is approximately 1.5 km long and mostly follows uneven terrain. At Utvær Lighthouse, those who wish can climb to the top and enjoy the spectacular views!
Important information!
Remember to wear sturdy shoes and a windproof and waterproof jacket. Feel free to bring food and drinks. The weather can change quickly this far out at sea, so we recommend packing warm clothing.
Waffles, coffee and squash are available for purchase on Utvær, along with souvenirs. Payment can be made by Vipps or cash.
The North Sea Trail crosses uneven terrain and is not recommended for people with limited mobility. The tour is not wheelchair accessible.
About the tour
The tour begins with a scenic boat trip through islands, islets and skerries at the outer edge of the Sognefjord. After a stop at Nåra in Ytre Sula, the boat continues through narrow sounds and island communities before reaching Utvær, far out at sea. The boat operator provides commentary along the way.
