Lysebotn Boot Camp - bicycling in Ryfylke

A demanding ride with plenty of steep hills through mesmerising scenery. Spend an extra day and experience hiking to Kjeragbolten.

The trip can be made in a period between late May and late September (the road to Lysebotn is closed during the winter). If you would prefer hiking to Preikestolen (the Pulpit Rock) instead of Lysebotn and Kjerag, opting for the equally spectacular trip to Preikestolen is a possibility. You will also experience the beaches of Jæren along with the sublime topography that Southwestern Norway has to offer.

Day One: Biking a total of 89 km. 
The bike ride starts at Sola Strandhotell. You will bike alongside the magnificent Jæren coastline before heading inward towards Høg-Jæren. As you reach Undheim, the route starts ascending in direction of Bue. You will then bike along E39, before veering off towards some pretty narrow, but lightly trafficked Southwestern style Norwegian roads. The scenery becomes increasingly captivating. Gloppedalsura, the largest scree in Northern Europe, is located at the crest of the hill. Make sure to equip your bike with headlights, as you will have to pass through rather dark tunnels. You will spend the night at Byrkjedalstunet; an idyllic site at the beginning of Hunnedalen. If you are not feeling knackered yet, you can hike up to Maudal. The trail rises considerably and has many twists and turns along the way. The starting point is near the hotel. The valley, a green oasis enclosed by towering mountains, is about 4 km away. You can order plunge baths outside if you wish.

Included: A welcoming baggie with freshly baked goods and a 0.5 liter soda, special meal of the day for dinner, and breakfast. Everyone will get the chance to prepare a packed lunch for the next day.

Day Two: Biking a total of 106 km.
Today's stretch, a lengthy one with a moderate rising level, starts at Byrkjedalstunet. You will follow the path at the bottom of Hunnedalen up towards the mountains. At this point, the surface levels out and becomes relatively flat. You will subsequently ride downhill towards Sinnes. Thereupon, you will bike a flat waterside stretch at an elevation of approximately 600 meters above sea level. Beware of the winding road towards Fidjeland and Sirdal Høyfjellshotell, though. This is a great lunch spot, by the way, in case you are hungry. The following stretch is at an elevation of up to 1000 meters above sea level. You will witness fierce, uncultivated mountain landscapes as you prepare for biggest and most spectacular downhill on the whole trip. I would recommend a breather at Ørneredet, purely for the sake of enjoying the view. On the road down from Ørneredet, there is an eight kilometer hill with an inclination of 8.9% as well as 29 turns. Never let your hand off the brake! And remember to take five every once in a while so you can truly soak up the magnificent scenery. Lysebotn is located down by the water, and this is where you will stay for the night; at Lysefjorden tourist lodge. Each room holds four people. The following day you will have to get up early, as the boat departs at 07:20.

Included: Linen and breakfast (leave word that you are departing with an early boat in order to get a packed lunch).

Tip: I would highly recommend ordering an extra in Lysebotn. This will allow you to either bike or get a cab up to Ørneredet, and hike up to Kjeragbolten. This would take about six hours in total and it would be an unforgettable experience.

Day Three: Biking a total of 89 km.
The day starts with a boat ride on the beautiful Lysefjord, where you will pass Kjeragbolten and Preikestolen from below. The final leg is from Lauvvik and through Høle, along which you will find a grocery shop in case you are hungry. You will then climb towards Søredalen, where even more dazzling Norwegian scenery can be discovered. When you bike past Ålgård, you may start feeling hungry? There will not be a lot of places further along the road where you can buy food, so stopping for lunch at Ålgård will probably be a good idea. After Ålgård, you will start to elevate towards Høg-Jæren, where the landscape has been defined by centuries of sheep grazing the area. You will have to climb a steep but short section, at an elevation level of roughly 200 meters above sea level, but as you reach the apex of the hill, you will start to descend towards the sea. You get a great ride along the coast to Sola Strandhotell, where you can end your trip in the best way possible with a good meal and a spa. The dinner there is fantastic, so let me know if you would like me to pre-order a table for you.

The trip has now come to an end, and I hope you have had a wonderful yet physically demanding experience! I will come outside and gather all the equipment you have borrowed, and say goodbye at approximately at 18:15. Departure from the hotel will be at 18:45 if you are planning on taking the boat.
