AVALDSNES

Pilgrimage to St. Olav`s church, Avaldsnes

Avaldsnes is the regional center for Kystpilegrimsleia which runs from Egersund to Trondheim. A spectacular and beautiful journey along the coast with fjords, islands, islets and reefs - a saga from viking to pilgrimage.

St. Olav's Church is the most prominent memorial to earlier ages at Avaldsnes. Built by King Haakon Haakonsen in about AD 1250 to serve his royal farm, Haakon dedicated it to St. Olav. A century or so later Haakon Magnusson inducted Olav's and three other Norwegian churches into the Royal Collegiate. The church was an important refuge for pilgrims making the long journey to Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim.

At Nordvegen History Center you will receive information and a stamp in your passport. Here are also tickets for a theatrical walk with the pilgrim Siv Eiriksdottir anno 1308. From St. Olav's Church to Bukkøy you can follow seven Pilgrim's Posts in lovely hiking surroundings.

Kystpilgrimsleia provides you with information about a rich selection of trips.
