Spiterstulen Turisthytte is located 1,111 meters above sea level in the lush Visdalen valley in Lom, and is a natural starting point for trips to Norway’s highest mountain, Galdhøpiggen.

Based at Spiterstulen, you can also reach 17 of Norway’s 26 peaks rising above 2,300 meters above sea level—on a day trip! Big brother Galdhøpiggen towers to the west, with little brother Glittertinden to the east.

In summer, you can climb these peaks on your own—by following a marked trail right from the cabin wall! The lodge is closed in midwinter, but when the road and the lodge open in spring, the area is also an eldorado for ski touring. Spiterstulen is one of the lodges you stop by along the route “Høgruta i Jotunheimen,” on the stage between Glitterheim and Leirvassbu.

Historically, Spiterstulen was a mountain dairy hamlet belonging to the ancestral farm Sulheim in Lom, but it has been an overnight place for tourists since 1844. The first extension for tourists was put up in 1874. Through seven generations, the place has since been expanded and modernized, while the old character has been preserved—with several small and large buildings gathered in a courtyard. The guest rooms range from small cabins and family units with a bathroom, to youth sections with bunk beds and shared washrooms. In total, there are beds for 250 guests.

If you want to sleep outside in the fresh mountain air, there is a tent site on the other side of the river Visa. As a camping guest, you can use the service building, which is on the same side of the river as the main buildings. Here you’ll find showers, toilets, and fresh water for drinking and cooking.

There is also a tent and campervan area about 200 meters north of the main building, which is set up for camping. There are only outhouses there.

There are parking spots for campervans by the parking lot, with the option of power hookup via app-controlled posts. There are also options to fill up water. The camping fee and information are handled at the reception at Spiterstulen.

Just the journey into Visdalen is, in itself, an experience of history and nature. Animals still graze along the road in summer, linking the present and the past. In Visdalen you’ll find rich plant life, babbling streams, overgrown animal pitfalls, and legendary mountain pasture ruins that invite you to take pleasant short walks. The mountain pasture meadows are a playground for children. Spiterstulen gives everyday life a breathing space!
