Experience original vessels and up-to-date exhibits on Thor Heyerdahl's expeditions.
New exhibition summer 2026
Thor Heyerdahl (1914–2002) gained worldwide fame when he crossed the Pacific Ocean on the balsawood raft Kon-Tiki in 1947. Now you can experience this history in a completely new way.
The original Kon-Tiki raft is presented in a spectacular setting, with a living sky above and the ocean beneath – making you feel as though you are embarking on a journey across the Pacific yourself. Interactive stations allow you to explore the expedition and get to know Heyerdahl and his crew.
You can even “dive” beneath the raft and see the marine life that surrounded the voyage. The exhibition on Heyerdahl’s work on Easter Island has also been upgraded. You can also see the original reed raft Ra II, which crossed the Atlantic Ocean, and learn more about the Tigris expedition, which crossed the Indian Ocean.
After passing through a 30-metre-long cave, you will find a Kon-Tiki area for children, where they can play. Every child visiting the museum receives a quiz (in Norwegian, English or German), as well as a prize for the younger ones.
The Academy Award-winning film Kon-Tiki is shown daily at 12 pm in the museum’s cinema. In addition, you will find an extensive museum shop offering a range of exciting items from Norwegian and Scandinavian designers.
