Staafkerken

NOORS HOUT
Houten kerken met uitvoerig uitgewerkte houtsneden stonden ooit in vele delen van Noordwest-Europa. Vandaag vind je deze kerken bijna alleen nog maar in Noorwegen terug.

Tijdens de middeleeuwen werden in heel Europa enorme stenen kathedralen gebouwd. In Noorwegen werd een vergelijkbare techniek gebruikt om met hout te bouwen.

Een ambacht van de Vikingen

Dankzij de interesse van de Vikingen voor scheeps- en woningbouw ontstond er een traditie van houtsnijwerk en ontwikkelde de techniek zich verder. Dit werk kende zijn hoogtepunt in de staafkerken.

Er zijn verschillende soorten staafkerken, maar wat ze allemaal gemeen hebben zijn de hoekpalen (’staven’) en het kader van timmerhout met muurplanken die op drempels staan. Deze muren staan bekend als staafmuren, vandaar de benaming staafkerk.

De houten deuren en pirons zijn heel mooi versierd met houtsnedes. De decoraties zijn een intrigerende combinatie van christelijke motieven en thema’s met dieren en draken die uit het prechristelijke Vikingtijdperk stammen.

Open voor het publiek

Vandaag blijven er 28 historische staafkerken over. Zoals je kunt zien op onderstaande kaart ligt de meerderheid daarvan in het binnenland van Oost-Noorwegen en Fjord-Noorwegen.

De meeste zijn in de zomer open voor het publiek, in andere kun je dan weer het hele jaar door terecht.
