About the activity

You will meet your guide at P2 parking in Skjeggedal, where you will get all the necessary gear. To start the day, we will walk along a lake on a gravel road for about an hour. Then only 1 km long but steep path will lead us to the start of the Via Ferrata. Usually, here we need to catch our breath and refresh ourselves before we go through the safety instructions. Your guide makes sure that everyone is ready and the climb starts. The higher you get, the nicer the views are! Underneath you can see the blue lake – Ringedalsvatnet and you gaze towards Folgefonna Glacier on the other side of the fjord. In the course of climbing the Via Ferrata, your guide gives you tips and tricks how to climb the most safely and efficiently and soon after 200m of climbing you reach the top.

Here the view over the steep canyon opens and you spot Trolltunga from a distance. We will take our lunch at this hidden spot before you start on the last 3km hike to reach “the Troll’s tongue”. And finally it is the time to get overwhelmed by the bucket list viewpoint! Arriving at the tourist crowds at Trolltunga, the other hikers are looking at you with surprised eyes as they see the helmet hanging on your backpack. After a photo-session here, we relax a bit more and when ready, we start to head back. The way back follows main trail (or there is the option to downclimb the Via Ferrata) and you will see how enjoyable it is to “just walk” after our previous adventures.

Weather

Conditions in the mountains can be unpredictable and change fast. Temperature can be deceiving as the wind plays an important role. Also think about the effects of sun, rain and snow conditions. Climbing the Via Ferrata, we usually move slower than if we hike, it is therefore a bigger challenge to stay warm during cold and wet days – especially on the hands. Every person’s perception is different, so make sure you bring clothes according to your personal needs.

A general thumb rule is: check the weather forecast, prepare for the worst conditions but do not overload your backpack, weight matters greatly when it is about saving energy. Use the onion look: layers that can easily be taken on and off.

We do not cancel tours due to bad weather. The only times we cancel is when the bad weather becomes dangerous weather. On the Trolltunga Via Ferrata this can be strong winds, thunderstorms or icy conditions. We will inform you in case of cancellation. Please read our cancellation policies for more information.

What to bring
  • A lot of food (e.g. sandwiches, nuts, chocolate, banana)
  • 2 litres of water - we can fill up water on some spots along the trail

  • Mid layer
  • Cap or hat
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Backpack with approximately 35 litres capacity
  • Recommended for Via Ferrata: gloves with good grip

If rain and low temperatures are forecasted bring also:

  • Woolen base layer (do not use cotton, it is freezing cold when it is wet)
  • Warm mid layer
  • Wind- and waterproof shell pants
  • Spare socks
  • Beanie or headband
  • Gloves

Please make sure to leave enough space in your backpack for the climbing harness. In spring and autumn, we might additionally bring micro spikes or/and snowshoes. Inform yourself about the snow conditions prior to your trip.

FAQ

Why to join a guide on Via Ferrata?

Climbing a Via Ferrata without proper experience impose serious risks. Therefore, we highly recommend joining a guided tour since your guide will show you how to use the equipment correctly and safely and assist you whenever you are facing challenges. People with prior experience will benefit from special tips and tricks. Through stories about local history, culture and nature, your guide will help you see your surroundings with fresh eyes.

Do I need previous experience with Via Ferrata on a guided tour?

No previous climbing or Via Ferrata experience is required for this activity. However, you should feel fit and comfortable with heights

Is Via Ferrata a short cut to Trolltunga?

No, the Via Ferrata is not a short cut to Trolltunga. It is an alternative route that has the same length as the Classic Trolltunga Hike (from P2). Often the Via Ferrata takes longer than the hike.

Is it possible to climb Via Ferrata without a guide?

Yes, but everyone in the group must be more than 15 years old and must have experience with climbing or Via Ferrata. You cannot "guide" people without climbing experience. People without climbing experience, must join the guided tours.

To climb on your own, you must pay a maintenance fee for each person. This can be done atour store in Skjeggedal or to our VIPPS account Trolltunga Active. In the store in Skjeggedal we also have rental of climbing gear (within opening hours of the store).

Do I need any certification for Via Ferrata?

No, you do not need certification. Norway is an honest country that also trusts in the honesty of its visitors. If you tell us, you and your travel companions have the experience needed, we will believe you. After all it is your life that depends on your experience. Do not risk, just to save money!

Is the Via Ferrata safe in the rain?

The Via Ferrata is built to handle rain, there are steel steps from the start to the end, so it safe to climb even if the mountain is wet. If the weather is too rough, more than 25mm of rain and wind more than 15m/s over the 24 hours, or thunderstorms (there are quite rare in our region) we cancel the tour.

Why do not you anymore use the bikes to reach the Via Ferrata?

Unfortunately, we can no longer offer the bikes in the beginning of this tour as it is more sustainable and time-efficient to walk on the trail.
