Text from the organiser:

We humans are all mortal, but there are widely divergent views about what happens to us when we die.

Throughout history we've developed rituals to help us understand, remember and grieve.

The exhibition presents objects from the National Museum's collection such as urns, death masks and memento mori, along with works of art that use diverse means to create new stories about death and what it can mean.

Through rituals, remembrance and creative storytelling, spanning time periods and genres, the exhibition brings together works by Norwegian and international artists such as Sverre Fehn, Nan Goldin, Utagawa Hiroshige, Gustav Vigeland, Sandra Mujinga and Adolph Tidemand.

The exhibition invites visitors to reflect on how death shapes life - and how art helps us face the inevitable.
