Plan je eigen festivalrondreis

Met zoveel festivals in Noorwegen, volg je best je eigen ritme. Professioneel festivalfotograaf Tord Litleskare helpt je op weg.

Je vakantie plannen is leuk, maar je muzieksmaak laten bepalen waar je heen gaat tijdens de zomer is net zo spannend. Ga je naar een minder bekend muziekfestival in een Instagramwaardige omgeving, of meng je in de mensenmassa van megafestivals in grotere steden?

Heb je trek, maak dan een tussenstop bij de vele culinaire festivals onderweg met lokale specialiteiten op het menu.

Ontdek niet alleen de muziek, maar ook nieuwe bestemmingen

Tord Litleskare is een vrijbuiter. Hij werkt als fotograaf en hoofdredacteur van Gaffa Norway, een van de grootste muziektijdschriften van Scandinavië.

'Gelukkig hebben we bij Gaffa de vrijheid om over muziek en artiesten te schrijven die ons persoonlijk interesseren. Die vrijheid heeft een sterke invloed op waar ik heen reis tijdens het festivalseizoen.'

Voor een goede start raadt Tord de festivals in de grotere steden aan, want daar vindt hij, naar eigen zeggen, de interessantste artiesten.  Dit kan het Pstereo-festival in Trondheim zijn, Utopia in Stavanger, het Øya-festival en OverOslo in Oslo, of Bergenfest in zijn geboortestad Bergen.

'Net als bij andere muziekliefhebbers laat ik de artiesten beslissen waar ik heen trek. Maar dit hangt natuurlijk ook af in welke fase van waar je in je leven staat. Toen ik 17 of 18 was, ging ik maar al te graag overal heen. Die houding is ondertussen een beetje veranderd' legt Tord uit.

Maar hij begrijpt de avontuurlijke festivalgangers die op zoek zijn naar aparte ervaringen in de natuur.

Het Vinjerock-festival en het muziekfestival in Træna zijn allebei bedoeld voor jongeren die op zoek zijn naar nieuwe ervaringen midden in de natuur en nieuwe plekken willen ontdekken. Dat publiek is bijzonder trouw, want het is per slot van rekening een behoorlijke investering van tijd en geld om zo ver te reizen.'

Een ander voordeel van de minder bekende festivals bezoeken is volgens Tord de mogelijkheid nieuwe talenten te zien optreden die later misschien alleen nog maar op de allergrootste festivals optreden.

'We zien een stijgende trend in festivals die zich specialiseren in bepaalde muziekgenres. Steeds meer mensen kiezen festivals volgens hun eigen specifieke muzieksmaak. De heel grote artiesten die vroeger enorme massa’s op de been brachten worden schaarser. Er zijn niet veel Paul McCartneys meer over, en muzieksmaken worden steeds diverser', aldus Tord.

Verruim je geest en je smaakpapillen

Het stijgende aantal Noorse culinaire festivals gebruikt hetzelfde recept. Ook zij worden steeds diverser en specialiseren zich in de hernieuwde interesse in lokale producten die je het hele jaar door over heel Noorwegen vindt.

In de stad Haugesund vind je elk jaar in augustus de langste haringtafel ter wereld. In Hjelmeland is er elk jaar in september het Noorse fruit- en zalmfestival, en Valdres is gekend het vreemde maar erg geliefde Noorse Rakfisk-festival waar je in november deels gegiste forel kan eten. Het Sur & Bitter ambachtelijk bierfestival is in september de hotspot voor bierliefhebbers, en het Klipfish-festival (kabeljauw-festival) neemt eind juni de stad Kristiansand over. Het lijstje met culinaire festivals wordt elk jaar langer.

Foodies en muziekliefhebbers hebben tenslotte behoorlijk wat gemeen als het gaat over op je instinct afgaan. De reizigers die hun favoriete chef of muzikant op tournee volgen, kunnen behoorlijk wat afreizen: 'Als grote artiesten zoals Sting of Elton John naar Noorwegen komen, trekken ze vaak heel het land door om concerten te geven', zegt Tord.

Welke festivals zou Tord Litleskare aanbevelen aan mensen die voor het eerst naar Noorwegen komen?

'Begin met een paar dagen in de hoofdstad Oslo om alle nieuwigheidjes te ontdekken die er zijn, dus ook een paar festivals. Spring dan op de trein en reis via de schilderachtige bergroute naar Fjord-Noorwegen en Bergen, waar een van mijn favoriete muziekfestivals plaatsvindt: het Bergenfest.'

In 2014 kreeg het Bergenfest veel aandacht toen het Lana del Rey wist te strikken, maanden voor haar album uitkwam, en dat was maar twee dagen voordat haar optreden in Bergen plaatsvond!

'Dat heeft veel bijgedragen aan hun reputatie', zegt Tord.

Dit seizoen hebben de hoofdredacteur van Gaffa en zijn team minstens 22 festivals in de planning staan.

'Ik moet toegeven dat ik ook in mijn vrije tijd nog vaak naar festivals trek, soms enkel omdat de bestemming me heel erg aanspreekt.'
