Een roadtrip door Hardanger

Ga op een roadtrip en laat je betoveren door eindeloze natuurlijke pracht! De Noorse toeristische route Hardanger beslaat 165 kilometer en is verdeeld in vier trajecten: Granvin–Steinsdalsfossen, Norheimsund–Tørvikbygd, Jondal–Utne en Kinsarvik–Låtefoss.

Ontdek een stukje Noorwegen dat kunstenaars al eeuwenlang inspireert met haar natuurlijke schoonheid.

De makkelijkste manier om Hardanger te bereiken? Vlieg naar Bergen, huur een auto en rijd in zo’n twee à drie uur naar je bestemming. Je kunt ook naar Oslo of Kristiansand vliegen en vervolgens met een huurauto zo’n vijf à zes uur rijden. Houd er rekening mee dat de wegen smal en kronkelig zijn, dus neem je tijd en maak gebruik van de uitwijkplaatsen langs de route.

Een uitstekend startpunt is in het opvallende plaatsje Odda, waar je zelfs kunt overnachten in een unieke Woodnest-boomhut!

Odda is de ideale plek om al het natuurschoon in de omgeving te ontdekken, zoals…

…de indrukwekkende waterval Låtefossen. Je bereikt de waterval na ongeveer 20 minuten zuidwaarts rijden vanaf Odda, over schilderachtige, kronkelende wegen. Het is het perfecte start- of eindpunt van de toeristische route.

Houd rekening met beperkte parkeergelegenheid en drukte op de weg in de zomer.

Op slechts 10 minuten rijden ten noorden van Odda ligt Tyssedal, het startpunt van de beroemde Trolltunga-wandeling. Als je zin hebt in een flinke uitdaging, kun je deze 27 kilometer hiken naar de rotsformatie die 700 meter boven het meer Ringedalsvatnet uitsteekt.

De volledige hike duurt ongeveer 8–12 uur. Ga met een gids op pad als je de tocht in de wintermaanden wilt maken.

Breng een bezoek aan Het Krachtmuseum in Tyssedal en ontdek de fascinerende wereld van Noorse waterkracht. Hier vind je bovendien het keizerlijke toilet van Wilhelm II! Hij bezocht Noorwegen regelmatig aan het begin van de 20e eeuw en wordt gezien als de grondlegger van het fjordtoerisme.

    Starting point Buer in Odda. Drive off from route 13, signposted Buer. Drive to the end of the road where you will find the parking. About the trail You will walk next to the river for most of the hike up to the glacier. Some places there are bridges where you cross the river. The whole hike is in wild and lush landscape, and you can see the glacier in front of you the whole way. In some parts of the hike you will find ropes to make it easier to climb. The last part of the trail is in steep terrain, and sturdy hiking boots are necessary. Important! Do NOT go near the glacier. The glacier is in constant movement, and going near the glacier can be very dangeours. For guided tours on the glacier, contact the tourist information in Odda. Na ongeveer 27 kilometer bereik je Espenes, waar je zowel een fotostop met prachtig uitzicht als een rustplaats met een uniek ontwerp vindt!

Een unieke rustplaats

Mis de originele en interessante rustplaatsen (en toiletten) langs de route niet! Dat klinkt misschien wat vreemd, maar langs alle Noorse toeristische routes vind je uniek ontworpen toiletten (artikel in het Engels) op de mooiste plekjes.

Zelfs als je geen hoge nood hebt, is het de moeite waard om even te stoppen voor het uitzicht!

De rustplaatsen langs deze route vind je bij Espenes, Hereiane, Tyrvefjøra, Kvanndal en Skjervsfossen.

Volg de toeristische route zo’n 30 kilometer langs het Sørfjorden, een zijtak van het Hardangerfjord, en je bereikt de idyllische plaatsjes Lofthus en Kinsarvik.

Overnacht hier een nacht of twee en geniet van panoramisch uitzicht op het fjord, de zacht glooiende heuvels en imposante bergen.

Het is de perfecte plek om even iets te eten, met diverse lokale bakkerijen en restaurants. Langs de kant van de weg kun je verse kersen, aardbeien en frambozen kopen zodra ze rijp zijn. Je kunt vaak wat muntjes in een bakje achterlaten en je eigen mandje meenemen.

Voor een vleugje luxe kun je inchecken bij het historische Hotel Ullensvang. Geniet van de eersteklas spa met een kanaal om buiten in te zwemmen en een adembenemend uitzicht over het fjord.

In dit gebied ontbreekt het zeker niet aan natuurlijke schoonheid en je vindt er talloze fantastische wandelingen.

Ben je een ervaren wandelaar, probeer dan Dronningstien, ook bekend als de panoramische wandelroute van Koningin Sonja. Je bent er zo’n 6 tot 9 uur mee bezig en je overbrugt ongeveer 1.100 meter aan hoogteverschil.

Stap aan boord voor de 30 minuten durende veerboottocht van Kinsarvik naar het historische plaatsje Utne. Wat dacht je van een authentiek verblijf in Utne Hotel? Dit is het oudste geregistreerde houten hotel van Noorwegen, dat in 1722 begon als herberg. Leuk weetje: het hotel is altijd gerund door vrouwen met een sterke persoonlijkheid!

Volg de smalle weg van Utne naar Jondal in zuidwestelijke richting; na ongeveer een uur bereik je de veerboot die je over het fjord naar Tørvikbygd brengt.

Maak voor de overtocht eerst een omweg naar het schilderachtige Rosendal. Hier kun je het kleinste kasteel van Scandinavië, het in 1665 gebouwde Baroniet, bezoeken.

Een autorit van ongeveer twintig minuten vanaf de veerbootterminal in Tørvikbygd brengt je naar de betoverende waterval Steinsdalsfossen. Dankzij het bijzondere platform kun je er zelfs achterlangs wandelen zonder nat te worden!

Plan je bezoek dan in mei of juni als je de waterval op z’n krachtigst wilt zien.

Houd er rekening mee dat delen van de bezienswaardigheid in de wintermaanden gesloten zijn.

Op slechts vijf minuten rijden ligt het charmante dorpje Norheimsund, een ideale plek om een nacht of twee te verblijven.

Rijd nog een halfuurtje verder over de kronkelende fjordwegen tot je bij de mooie rustplaats Steinstøberget aankomt.

Er zijn voorzieningen en zitplaatsen, en aan het fjord staan bankjes waar je kunt genieten van het uitzicht op het Hardangerfjord en de indrukwekkende Folgefonna-gletsjer. Er is zelfs een plekje direct aan het water als je zin hebt om te vissen.

Geniet van de laatste 30 minuten van de toeristische route terwijl je naar Granvin rijdt over alweer een smalle, kronkelende weg. Als je nog wat tijd over hebt, kun je een kleine omweg maken, want de waterval Skjervsfossen ligt op slechts tien minuten rijden. Dit is ook een uitstekende plek om de toeristische route in de omgekeerde richting te beginnen.

Neem even pauze bij een van de rustplekken en bewonder de tweelingwatervallen die vanaf 150 meter naar beneden storten.

Let op: in de winter is de weg naar deze waterval afgesloten.

Als je nog wat tijd over hebt, is het zeker de moeite waard om de Hardangerbrug over te steken. Het is een van de grootste hangbruggen ter wereld en verbindt de zuid- en noordzijde van het Hardangerfjord. Er zijn parkeerplaatsen aan weerszijden van de brug en je kunt met de auto, de fiets of te voet oversteken.

Na het oversteken van de brug rijd je nog zo’n twintig minuten en kom je aan in het schilderachtige plaatsje Eidfjord. Wandel door het centrum of ontdek een van de vele wandelroutes in de omgeving.

Een korte autorit door een kronkelige tunnel vanaf Eidfjorden brengt naar de imposante waterval Vøringsfossen!

Dit is het startpunt van een andere toeristische route in de regio: de toeristische route Hardangervidda. Deze is 67 kilometer lang en loopt oostwaarts tussen Eidfjord en Haugastøl.

Let op: de weg is het hele jaar open, maar in de winter kunnen weersomstandigheden het rijden flink bemoeilijken en kan de weg tijdelijk afgesloten worden.

Goed om te weten voordat je vertrekt

Langs de route liggen twee veerbootovertochten: tussen Tørvikbygd–Jondalen en Kinsarvik–Utne–Kvandal. Bekijk de veerbootdienstregelingen.

Informatie voor fietsers: Houd in de zomer rekening met druk verkeer. Vermijd de tunnels tussen Kinsarvik en Odda (en richting Låtefossen) en rijd in plaats daarvan over de buitenweg.

Verschillende delen van weg 13 (Skjervsvegen) zijn in de wintermaanden afgesloten, waardoor je dan niet bij de waterval Skjervsfossen kunt komen.

De beste periode voor deze rit is van april tot oktober. Als je niet gewend bent om in winterse omstandigheden te rijden, kun je deze weg in de wintermaanden beter vermijden.

Tip: Ben je met een camper op pad en heb je geen zin in smalle wegen, dan kun je de oostelijke weg tussen Utne en Odda nemen.
