Mjølkevegen (Noors voor ‘Melkweg’) bestaat uit verschillende fietsroutes dwars door het hart van het weelderige berglandschap van Noorwegen.
Je stapt op je fiets bij het uitgestrekte, kraakheldere smeltwatermeer ‘Vinstre’ tegen de achtergrond van de enorme bergen van Jotunheimen. Het onvergetelijke uitzicht is een magnifieke uitnodiging om een minstens zo memorabele fietstocht te maken.
De Valdres-vallei is gelegen in het centrum van het middelgebergte net ten zuiden van Jotunheimen. Hier loopt een fietsroute van 250 kilometer die start bij Vinstre, zo’n 1000 meter boven zeewaterniveau, en eindigt bij Gol, 200 meter boven zeeniveau.
Een helemaal te gek fietsuniversum
De route heet Mjølkevegen (Melkweg) en het hoogste punt ervan ligt op 1300 meter boven zeeniveau. Anders dan je zou vermoeden, verwijst de naam niet naar ons sterrenstelsel, maar naar het feit dat melkveebedrijven hier de vele in het middelgebergte vrij rondlopende koeien komen melken.
De weg loopt door glooiende heuvels en uitgestrekte graslanden, dus het mag geen wonder heten dat het een van de populairste fietsroutes in Noorwegen is.
Fietsroutes van verschillende zwaarte
De rustige, langzaam lopende koeien die de openbare weg met je delen, vormen in het algemeen een leuke attractie tijdens je fietsvakantie, maar je moet ze natuurlijk goed in de gaten houden als je wat harder gaat fietsen. Onderweg zul je ook veel geiten zien, maar die kiezen er meestal voor om op het meer heuvelachtige terrein te blijven.
Hoewel Valdres op grote hoogte en breedtegraad ligt, is het er de hele zomer mild en zonnig, dus vergeet vooral de zonnebrandcrème niet.
Op veel kaarten staan alle wegen aangegeven als bergafwaarts, maar al fietsend zul je merken dat het landschap feitelijk veel gevarieerder is. Mjølkevegen biedt een combinatie van uitdagende bergopwaartse trajecten, duizelingwekkende afdalingen, lange uitgestrekte wegen over open terrein langs schitterende meren en in de laagste delen zelfs stukken door de bossen.
De route is op sommige plekken uitdagend genoeg voor doorgewinterde rijders, maar nergens te moeilijk voor minder getrainde fietsers.
Het is ook goed om te weten dat je de route ook uitstekend in het zuiden kunt starten, bijvoorbeeld in Gol, en dan naar het noorden kunt fietsen in plaats van andersom. Dat is niet meer of minder bergachtig of uitdagend.
Als de zon de reden is dat je het erg warm hebt op de fiets, zorg dan dat je niet ook nog eens angstzweet hoeft te hebben over je accommodatie of je koffers.
Reisorganisaties hebben een waar smorgasbord aan pakketten samengesteld die je reis in hapklare stukken verdelen, inclusief verblijf en vervoer van je bagage. Op die manier kun je echt zorgeloos genieten van de prachtige omgeving en onbezorgd je fietslust uitleven.

De noordelijkste veerpontroute
Op het Bygdin bergmeer kun je je fietstocht combineren met een veerboottocht die al meer dan 100 jaar bestaat.
Al sinds haar oprichting in 1912 vaart de veerboot M/S Bitihorn elke dag dezelfde route over het meer en genieten toeristen elke dag van de unieke en prachtige weerspiegeling van de enorme bergtoppen van Jotunheimen in het kristalheldere water.

Gomobu Mountain Lodge is a family-owned lodge located at the small mountain village of Vaset. The lodge has 36 cosy, refurbished rooms, reception, ski & bicycle storage and a common sauna. It is located along Jotunheimvegen, a mountain road that runs through a landscape of old summer farms and pasture cabins. Støl-voedingswaren - een Noorse specialiteit
Stølsliv is een speciale vorm van landbouw in de Noorse bergen. De koeien, geiten en ander vee lopen op de “støl” (weide), waar ze – doorgaans binnen redelijke loopafstand van de boerderij – de hele zomer lekker gras kunnen eten en kunnen stoeien.
Sommige boerderijen openen ‘s zomers hun deuren voor bezoekers en verkopen “støl”-producten: huisgemaakte kaas, plat brood en speciale regionale pannenkoeken met zure room.
Als je bij een restaurant gaat eten moet je vooral de rakfisk proberen: een delicatesse die –meestal met forel – wordt bereid op ongeveer dezelfde manier als gerookte zalm, in een soort pekel. Het is een voorgerecht dat de meeste visliefhebbers heerlijk zullen vinden.
Valdres staat qua eten vooral bekend om de rakfisk, maar ook voor andere culinaire specialiteiten kunnen nieuwsgierige fietsers van de fiets stappen. In de categorie gerookt vlees vind je er bijvoorbeeld ‘kurv’, een speciaal soort worst. Andere gekoesterde specialiteiten zijn onder meer verschillende soorten hertenvlees, witte kaas, bruine kaas en geitenkaas.
Noren zijn gek op hun bruine kaas, die doorgaans wordt gemaakt van een mengsel van koe- en geitenmelk – en ze delen hem graag met anderen. Lees meer over de eettradities in Noorwegen.

Maar, geen nood: als je je nieuwsgierigheid liever beperkt tot waar je fietst dan wat je eet, vind je op de menu’s altijd voldoende herkenbare internationale favoriete gerechten.
Mocht je om de een of andere reden besluiten de melkproducten waaraan de route haar naam ontleent, niet uit te proberen, geven we je in overweging om deze laatste aanbeveling toch in elk geval niet aan je voorbij te laten gaan: de Noren hebben in recente jaren een enorme interesse ontwikkeld in het microbrouwen, dus wat je ook eet, spoel het in elk geval weg met een glas heerlijk koud bier.

Tips om u recht en smal te houden
Op de wegen in Noorwegen gelden dezelfde verkeersregels en verkeersborden voor fietsers als automobilisten. Blijf rechts rijden, geef aan wanneer je wilt afslaan, en rijdt niet onder invloed.
Houd je aan de algemene verkeersregels en -borden. Op voetpaden mag gefietst worden, maar je moet er wel je snelheid aanpassen. Fietsen is verboden op de snelweg en andere vierbaanswegen. Steek bij het links of rechts afslaan je hand uit om richting aan te geven. Draag op de fiets altijd een helm. Een reflecterend hes is altijd een goed idee, vooral op drukke wegen. Alleen kinderen onder de 10 jaar mogen als passagiers mee op de fiets.
Wat je fiets moet hebben
In het donker of bij slecht zicht: wit of geel licht vóór en rood licht achter, een rode reflector achter, witte of rode reflectoren op de pedalen, twee onafhankelijk van elkaar werkende remmen, een fietsbel.
