Op zo'n twee uur rijden ten westen van Oslo ligt het charmante zuidelijke deel van Vestfold, ook wel bekend als de zonnekust.
Geniet van stranden, musea, boerderijwinkels, wandelingen langs de kust en heerlijke verse vis en zeevruchten.
En dan hebben we het nog niet eens gehad over alle boerderijwinkels in de omgeving, waar je hoogwaardige zelfgemaakte producten vindt en je wordt verwelkomd door de geur van versgebakken broodjes. Dit gebied lijkt misschien een verborgen pareltje, maar onder Noren is het geen geheim. Sterker nog: het is een populaire zomerbestemming en een perfecte plek voor het hele gezin. In dit deel van Noorwegen begint de lente vroeg en het zomergevoel houdt aan van mei tot in de herfst. De regio Vestfold staat bekend om het milde klimaat.
Beleef een heerlijke mix van cultuur, natuur en heerlijke streekgerechten. Kies uit luxe spa-resorts, historische hotels en tal van campings, en geniet van luie dagen aan zee en een prachtig kustpad.

Ontspanning aan de kust
Rijd vanuit Oslo in zo'n twee uur naar Helgeroa, op het schiereiland Brunlanes. Dit gezellige dorpje ligt direct aan zee en is een ideale plek om je rondreis te beginnen. We beginnen aan de westkant van het schiereiland, rijden zuidwaarts en steken over naar de oostkant, maar je kunt de route natuurlijk ook andersom rijden.
Helgeroa staat bekend om zijn ontspannen sfeer en rijke maritieme geschiedenis. Proef verse vis en zeevruchten, hop van eiland naar eiland of begin aan het 35 kilometer lange kustpad dat helemaal naar Stavern loopt. Je kunt ook kortere stukken van het pad wandelen.
Op vijf minuten rijden vanaf Helgeroa ligt Lillavendel, een boerderijwinkel met café die absoluut de moeite waard is!
Lillavendel is een belevenis op zich. Geniet van een lekkere middagthee of van versgebakken lekkernijen zoals kaneelbroodjes. En als je geen trek meer hebt, zijn er nog wat schattige dierenvriendjes die dat wel hebben. Bezoek de alpaca's en voer ze of ga met ze mee tijdens een korte wandeling.
Vergeet ook niet schappen in de winkel achter het café te bekijken. Hier vind je handgemaakte zeep en kaarsen die heerlijk ruiken.
Vanaf hier rijd je in tien minuten naar Mølen. Dit is het grootste kiezelstrand van Noorwegen en maakt deel uit van de Vestfoldraet, een landschap dat na de laatste ijstijd is achtergebleven. Het strand is in 2008 uitgeroepen tot UNESCO Geopark en het is ideaal voor wandelingen langs de zee.
Vervolgens kun je in een halfuur langs de kustlijn wandelen of in zo'n 10 minuten rijden naar het gezellige kustplaatsje Nevlunghavn. Stop er voor een maaltijd of overnacht in Nevlunghavn Gjestgiveri. Dit historische hotel brengt je helemaal terug naar 1920 met zijn zorgvuldig uitgevoerde stijl en interieur.
De ligging vlak bij zee heeft zo zijn voordelen, want bij Nevlunghavn Gjestgiveri geniet je van verse vis en zeevruchten uit de streek. Probeer de knapperige fish and chips of ga voor de complete zeevruchtentoren.
Dat de vis zo vers is, is geen verrassing: de vissershaven van Nevlunghavn ligt pal naast het hotel. Met een beetje geluk zie je de vissersboten binnenvaren met de vangst van de dag. Je kunt de vis ook zelf kopen in de viswinkel aan de haven.
Rijd zo'n 20 minuten naar het oosten en je komt aan in het idyllische kustplaatsje Stavern.
Bij Fredriksvern verft ontdek je een mix van maritieme geschiedenis en moderne cultuur. Dit was de eerste grote marinebasis van Noorwegen en de plek bestond vermoedelijk al sinds de oudheid als haven. Tegenwoordig vind je er ook kunstgalerieën, musea en leuke activiteiten.
Loop ook eens langs Minnehallen (de Herdenkingshal), een gedenkplaats voor zeelieden die tijdens de wereldoorlogen om het leven kwamen.
In Stavern vind je overal traditionele witte huizen en kleine winkeltjes aan zee. Wandel op je gemak door het gezellige centrum. Wat dacht je van een overnachting in Hotel Wassilioff? Dit unieke hotel bestaat al sinds 1844.
Een kampeerparadijs aan de kust
Langs de kust vind je volop mooie campings en plekken om je camper neer te zettten. Dit gebied is geliefd bij Noorse vakantiegangers en het is dé plek om het rustiger aan te doen en te genieten van ontspannen dagen op een van de vele stranden.
Vind een plekje bij Blokkebukta Camping, Solplassen Camping, Ula Camping of Stolpestad Camping. Je camper parkeren kan ook bij Solsiden Bobilpark en Stavern Folkehøyskole.
Gezinsvriendelijk
Laat de kinderen lekker rennen en genieten van speeltuinen, de omringende natuur en het strand. Met zo veel gezinsvriendelijke activiteiten in de omgeving is een camping een prima plek.
Wat dacht je van een dagje in Foldvik Familiepark? Met meer dan 40 activiteiten is dit de ideale plek om een dag of twee je te vermaken met de kinderen. Ontmoet schattige boerderijdieren, ontdek glijbanen, ziplines, speeltuinen en klimtorens, beleef het inclusieve zintuigenbos (voor kinderen in een rolstoel), spetter rond in het warme water van het waterpark en nog veel meer.
Vijf minuten rijden ten noorden van Stavern ligt het Nerdrum Museum, in het historische Agnes Fabrieksgebouw. Bekijk de vaste tentoonstelling met hoogtepunten uit meer dan 50 jaar werk van de beroemde Noorse kunstenaar Odd Nerdrum, een figuratief schilder en grondlegger van de Noorse Kitsch-beweging.
Vlak bij het museum ligt het gezellige café Havfuglen, vernoemd naar het geïllustreerde kinderboek van Odd Nerdrum. Geniet van koffie en gebak, geserveerd op ouderwets servies. Er klinkt uitsluitend klassieke muziek en gasten kunnen bladeren in culturele kranten en dichtbundels.
Of ga langs bij de kiosk van Mio Gelato voor romige, zelfgemaakte gelato die alleen met natuurlijke ingrediënten wordt bereid. Je vindt de kiosk pal naast café Havfuglen, met verschillende heerlijke smaken om uit te kiezen.
Wellness aan de kust
Vanaf het Nerdrum Museum rijd je in zo'n 10 minuten naar Larvik, een andere kustplaats. Wist je dat de Noorse ontdekkingsreiziger Thor Heyerdahl hier is geboren? Je kunt zelfs zijn ouderlijk huis bezoeken.
Larvik is ook een aanrader als je van zwemmen en ontspanning houdt, want hier vind je de gerenommeerde spa Farris Bad! Deze architectonisch indrukwekkende spa heeft de grootste en meest complete spa-afdeling van Scandinavië. Verwen jezelf met behandelingen op maat, een trap die rechtstreeks vanuit de spa de zee in loopt, een ondergrondse grot waar vers bronwater opborrelt en heerlijk, voedzaam eten.
De spa ligt direct naast het strand Batteristranda. Je bereikt het rechtstreeks vanuit Farris Bad, maar ook als je niet in de spa verblijft, is het strand vrij toegankelijk.
Wil je nog meer natuur en frisse lucht? Ruil dan de kust in voor Bøkeskogen, het grootste beukenbos van Noorwegen en het noordelijkste ter wereld, pal achter de spa. Volg de paden en geniet van het uitzicht op de stad onder je. Als je onderweg trek krijgt, kun je aanschuiven bij café Bøkekroa.
Wandel door het centrum van Larvik om lekker te winkelen. Geniet daarna van een smakelijke lunch bij Ellings in het historische Festiviteten-gebouw. Of stop bij Hungry Heart Café voor eten dat zowel gezond als creatief is, met een focus op biologische, lokale ingrediënten en gerechten die er goed uitzien én goed voor je zijn!
Rijd vanaf Larvik zo'n 20 minuten richting Sandefjord en stop bij Bondens hage. Deze boerderijwinkel verkoopt prachtige bloemboeketten en -arrangementen. Tijdens de zomermaanden vind je er ook tuinplanten. Het café verkoopt lekkere gebakken lekkernijen, zoals kaneelbroodjes, en in de winkel vind je bovendien hoogwaardige voedselproducten.

Meer avonturen
Je zou nu terug kunnen keren naar Oslo, maar we raden je aan om onderweg te stoppen bij een paar andere pareltjes in Vestfold. Er wachten nog meer kustplaatsjes, zoals Tønsberg met zijn kleurrijke pier. Tønsberg is de oudste stad van Noorwegen en er valt hier volop fascinerende Vikinggeschiedenis te ontdekken. Aan het eind van de pier vind je een replica van een Vikingschip, de Saga Oseberg, en je kunt zelfs een tochtje boeken en zelf de roeispanen in handen nemen.
Wandel omhoog naar Slottsfjelltårnet, het beroemdste herkenningspunt van Tønsberg. Deze toren op de kasteelrots werd voltooid in 1888 en is 17 meter hoog. Het uitzicht vanaf de top is fantastisch! Aan de voet van de heuvel staat bovendien een museum, voor wie meer wil weten over de geschiedenis en de resten van het echte Vikingschip, genaamd Klåstad-schip, wil zien.
Voor nog meer Vikinggeschiedenis kun je daarna in Borre terecht. Hier vind je het Midgard Vikingcentrum, met een reconstructie van een Vikinghal genaamd Gildehallen. Het ligt bovendien dicht bij de grootste grafheuvels van Noord-Europa uit de ijzertijd.
Ben je gek op kunst en kunstgeschiedenis? Dan mag je Åsgårdstrand niet overslaan. Dit idyllische plaatsje trekt kunstenaars uit de hele wereld aan. De Noorse schilder Edvard Munch bracht hier zijn zomers door, wat hem inspireerde tot verschillende schilderijen, waaronder Meisjes op de pier. Je kunt zijn kleine gele huis bezoeken, dat nu een museum is, en meer te weten komen over zijn leven.
Het kustplaatsje Horten is ideaal voor culturele ervaringen. Bezoek het historische Karljohansvern, ooit een marinebasis en nu de thuisbasis van het Marinemuseum en het Preus Museum, met tentoonstellingen van fotografie en beeldende kunst.
