Maak je een praatje met de locals voordat je gaat vissen in Noord-Noorwegen, dan stellen ze je vaak de volgende mystieke vraag:
'Heb je gezorgd voor wat geweldige haill?', gevolgd door heel wat gegiechel.
De uitdrukking haill betekent dat je seks hebt gehad voordat je gaat vissen omdat je dan niet alleen meer vis vangt, maar ook grotere exemplaren!
Haill is een traditionele overtuiging, vooral onder de bevolking in Noord-Noorwegen. Al klinkt het in eerste instantie een beetje raar, er zou zomaar een kern van waarheid in kunnen zitten.
Dr. Torunn Christiansen, specialist huisartsgeneeskunde in het Nordlandsykehuset (ziekenhuis), vraagt zich al lang af waarom mensen in het noorden er nog steeds van overtuigd zijn, zelfs in deze moderne tijd.
Net dat extra zetje
Ze vond ook een manier om de mythe te benaderen via een theoretische hypothese die misschien wel logisch is:
'Dopamine is onderdeel van het beloningssysteem van ons lichaam en komt bijvoorbeeld vrij tijdens het jagen of bij seksuele bevrediging. Ik vind het interessant hoe haill broodwinning combineert met seks', aldus Christiansen.
'Nadat je seks hebt gehad, werkt je cognitieve systeem beter. Met je samenwerken gaat makkelijker en je neemt betere beslissingen, vandaar dat seks kan leiden tot een betere vangst', legt Christiansen uit.
En niet te vergeten ... het kan ook je relatie met je partner ten goede komen.
Wil je de noorderlingen leren kennen, vraag dan gewoon wat voor soort haill volgens hen het beste werkt: Een nieuwe haill, een oude haill, haill met een onbekende of een andere soort haill.

Iets langer geleden haill (mellomhaill) - tussen de 48 en de 72 uur geleden sinds de vrijpartij
Lang geleden haill (gammalhaill) - meer dan 72 uur geleden OF met iemand die twintig jaar ouder is dan jij
Droomhaill (drømmehaill) - erotische dromen die tot dezelfde bevrediging leiden als gewone haill
Telefoonhaill (telefonhaill) - als je voordat je gaat vissen een erotisch berichtje of telefoontje krijgt
Haill met een onbekende (fremmedhaill) - als je haill hebt gehad via een avontuurtje
Zelfhaill (sjølhaill) - niemand anders kunnen vinden voor wat haill? Dan moet je het zelf even doen

Het belang van goede haill
Haill had vroeger een serieuzer kantje. Tot de jaren '30 werd haill speciaal gebruikt voor de heilbotvangst - een exclusieve vissoort die meer dan tweehonderd kilo kan wegen. Je kon met geen andere vissoort zo goed je brood verdienen en je gezin van eten voorzien dan met heilbot - ook wel 'de koningin van de zee' genoemd.
Maar de heilbotvisserij was gevaarlijk, en je moest slecht weer doorstaan en ruwe werkomstandigheden ontberen.
'Haill weerspiegelt de relatie tussen een visser en zijn vrouw. De uitdrukking werd privé gebruikt, en niet in het openbaar. Het verhaal luidde dat je je geluk, of je haill, van je geliefde kreeg. Je moest de juiste partner kiezen die je genoeg geluk gaf om je huishouden overeind te houden, want de vrouw bezat de haill', legt volksdeskundige Marit Anne Hauan uit.
Tegenwoordig zijn we niet meer afhankelijk van de heilbotvangst om goed te kunnen leven, en de uitdrukking haill heeft een meer humoristische betekenis gekregen. Maar de mensen in Noord-Noorwegen zeggen nog steeds 'godt haill', d.w.z. goede haill, als manier om je een goede vangst te wensen als je gaat vissen.
Omdat heilbot niet vaak wordt gevangen, is in Noord-Noorwegen de kabeljauwvangst meestal de broodwinning van de vissers. Elk jaar trekken de scholen kabeljauw van de Barentszzee naar de noordelijke kust om kuit te schieten. Deze delicatesse wordt skrei genoemd en is de vissoort geworden die het meest wordt geassocieerd met haill. Een skrei-avontuur is een must als je in het noorden gaat vissen!
