Om nog maar te zwijgen over het iets enger uitziende wezen dat op de zeebodem leeft: de gigantische koningskrab.

Zoals Lonely Planet het stelt, is Noorwegen het laatste toevluchtsoord in Europa voor een aantal van de meest intrigerende wilde diersoorten. Voordat er internet was, hoopten sommige toeristen hier zelfs ijsberen door de straten te zien lopen, maar die zijn alleen te zien op Spitsbergen.

In de wildernis

Op het Noorse vasteland kun je elanden, rendieren en unieke vogelsoorten tegenkomen als je op eigen gelegenheid de wildernis intrekt. Mocht dat gebeuren, houd er dan wel rekening mee dat dit wilde dieren zijn. Laat ze met rust en loop kalm van het dier weg. Maak ze niet bang, laat ze niet schrikken en benader ze niet, want sommige dieren kunnen achter je aan komen als ze zich bedreigd voelen.

Als je deze dieren in hun natuurlijke omgeving wilt zien, dan kun je het beste meegaan op wildsafari. De gidsen weten waar je de dieren waarschijnlijk zult spotten en, nog belangrijker, hoe je daarbij veilig blijft.

Dat laatste is erg belangrijk, want sommige safari's komen in de buurt van dieren waarnaar je niet zelf op zoek moet gaan, zoals muskusossen.

De gidsen maken het je gemakkelijker om te genieten van je ontmoetingen met de dieren. Je hoeft je nergens zorgen over te maken, behalve over het perfecte plaatje van je avonturen schieten (dat soort foto's doen het altijd goed op je sociale media).

Nu we de basis hebben besproken, gaan we de beste wildsafari's van Noorwegen verkennen!

Walvissen van dichtbij bekijken

Walvissen. Deze zeereuzen bezoeken de Noorse kust ieder jaar en pronken zowel voor toeristen als voor de locals. In Noorwegen worden ze het hele jaar door gespot aan de kust op de de Vesterålen. Vanuit Stø en Andenes kun je mee op een begeleide wildsafari. In Andenes opent in 2023 een spectaculair museum: The Whale (de Walvis).

De meest voorkomende walvissoort die in de zomer wordt gespot, is de potvis. Maar met een beetje geluk zie je ook grienden, dwergvinvissen, bultruggen, dolfijnen en orka's. In de winter kunnen zelfs vinvissen hun opwachting maken.

In de winter zijn er in Noord-Noorwegen meer begeleide walvissafari's, bijvoorbeeld via aanbieders van excursies in Tromsø. Dat komt omdat de favoriete wateren van de walvissen op maar een klein stukje varen liggen.

Op Spitsbergen kun je zelfs het geluk hebben om een glimp op te vangen van de grootste walvis ter wereld: de blauwe vinvis. In de zomer staat Isfjorden bekend als voedselgebied voor (blauwe) vinvissen, bultruggen en beluga's.

Door mee te gaan op walvissafari geniet je met volle teugen van het prachtige landschap, de frisse zeelucht en de natuurlijke omgeving. Het zal gegarandeerd een blijvende indruk op je maken!

Muskusossen: opvallende, harige wezens uit het verre verleden

De bergen bij Dovrefjell is de enige plek in Noorwegen - en één van de weinige plekken ter wereld - waar je de machtige muskusossen kunt zien. Tijdens een begeleide wandelsafari in de zomer spotten de gasten deze beesten van een halve ton met hun ruige haardos bijna altijd wel. Sommige aanbieders van excursies bieden ook begeleide tochten aan, en in de winter zelfs fototochten.

Muskusossen zijn niet agressief zolang je niet te dicht in hun buurt komt. Met het oog op je persoonlijke veiligheid en het welzijn van de dieren, moet je altijd minstens 200 meter afstand houden.

Muskusossen lijken misschien groot en lomp want ze wegen tussen de 225 en de 400 kilo, maar met een topsnelheid van 60 kilometer per uur zijn ze echt verrassend snel.

Het recht op vrije toegang

In Noorwegen mag je bijna overal wandelen. Openluchtrecreatie vormt een onlosmakelijk deel van de nationale identiteit en is ook vastgelegd in de wet. Je mag vrijelijk van de prachtige natuur genieten en net zoveel frisse lucht inademen als je maar wilt, zolang je je afval meeneemt en respect toont voor het Noorse landschap.

Een monsterlijk lekkere tocht

Kom oog in oog met een rode koningskrab in de Barentszzee voor de kust van Kirkenes in Finnmark, dicht bij de Russische grens. Daarna heb je de mogelijkheid om het sappige vlees van de koningskrab te proeven.

Op koningskrabsafari kun je dit gigantische zeedier zowel vanaf de wal als van op een boot bekijken terwijl het naar de oppervlakte wordt gehesen en in een grote kookpot gaat. De rode koningskrab kan tussen z'n scharen een spanwijdte van wel twee meter hebben en zo'n 15 kilo wegen.

De maaltijd die op de safari volgt is een waar festijn: lekkere stukken krabbenvlees op wit brood, zelfgemaakte dressing en, voor de liefhebbers, een mooi glas witte wijn erbij.

De droom van elke vogelspotter

Van het Lista Bird Observatory (vogelobservatorium) in Zuid-Noorwegen en Runde in Fjord-Noorwegen tot het Varangerfjord in Noord-Noorwegen - er zijn zo veel geweldige plekken om te gaan vogelspotten in de schitterende Noorse natuur.

Maak een foto van duikers, futen en wilde vogels in het westen of ga naar de leefgebieden in de bergen op zoek naar de morinelplevier, de grauwe franjepoot, de strandleeuwerik en de sneeuwgors. En met een beetje geluk kom je zelfs een sneeuwuil tegen.

De eilandengroep Vega die op de werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO staat, ligt iets buiten de kust van Helgeland en is ook een geliefd oord voor vogelspotters, want er zijn ruim 230 vogelsoorten te vinden! Eén van de meest populaire daarvan is de eidereend.

Ben je meer geïnteresseerd in soorten die typisch zijn voor het Noordpoolgebied zoals de Stellers eider, de koningseider en de kortbekzeekoet, dan moet je in het gebied rondom het Varangerfjord in Finnmark zijn. Het is één van de mooiste en best bereikbare bestemmingen voor dit soort vogels.

Langs de Noorse kust zijn ook zeearenden te vinden, vooral in het meest noordelijke deel van het land. Arenden uit Noorwegen zijn zelfs overgebracht om Schotland te helpen met het herbevolken van deze majestueuze vogels.

En vergeet ook de Atlantische papegaaiduiker niet! Je kunt deze kleine maar karakteristieke vogel op meerdere plekken spotten, maar de populairste plekken zijn Runde in de regio Sunnmøre, Andøya op de Vesterålen, het eiland Lovund iets buiten de kust van Helgeland en Røst op de Lofoten-eilanden.

Staan er elanden op je bucketlist?

Hoop je op een ontmoeting met de koning van het bos, ga dan mee met een begeleide elandsafari. Je kunt ook elanden in de schemering spotten op een elektrische fiets, een nacht doorbrengen in de eland-uitkijktoren in de Espedalen-vallei of een eland kussen bij Svartisen Moose in Salten.

Ja, er zijn in Noorwegen veel plekken om elanden te spotten, zowel in hun natuurlijke habitat als in natuurparken. We hebben zelfs een plaats met de naam Elgland, wat 'elandenland' betekent.

Andere leuke safari's om een blik op te werpen

De excursies die we hierboven beschreven, zijn een aantal van de meest populaire safari's, maar er zijn nog andere - minder bekende - activiteiten die je ook versteld zullen doen staan.

In Namdalen en langs de Hurdalselva-rivier in Oost-Noorwegen kun je al peddelend in een rivier op zoek naar bevers, en andere bestemmingen langs de kust bieden zeehondensafari's aan zoals in de regio Sunnmøre en in het noordwesten.

In het meest afgelegen Noorse gebied, op Spitsbergen, kun je zelfs walrussen tegenkomen. De eilanden liggen halverwege tussen Noorwegen en de Noordpool en staan bekend om hun bijzondere activiteiten in de vrije natuur.
