Er verschijnen in de loop van de vroege ochtend steeds meer elanden terwijl we rondrijden op het eiland Andøya op de Vesterålen in Noord-Noorwegen.

Het leuke aan elanden is dat je nooit weet wanneer of waar ze opduiken - zoals je hier kunt zien.
Die komen vast geen koffie voor onderweg halen :)

Op elandensafari in Noorwegen
Ooit al eens in 'elandenland' geweest? De eland is één van de bekendste inwoners van Noorwegen en komt in de meeste delen van het land voor.
Deze grote, imposante dieren met hun opvallende hoorns van dichtbij zien is een onvergetelijke ervaring. Tijdens een elandsafari helpen lokale gidsen je de weg te vinden in de uitgestrekte bossen en vergroten ze je kansen om elanden in hun natuurlijke omgeving te zien.
Belangrijke opmerking: zoals met alle wilde dieren, moeten we de elanden respecteren en altijd een veilige afstand bewaren. Vergeet niet dat elanden sneller zijn dan mensen en schade kunnen aanrichten als ze schrikken, worden verrast of hun jongen verdedigen.
Elandmagie op 'Sprookjeseiland'
De elandpopulatie in Noorwegen neemt toe, en in de loop van de tijd hebben ze hun favoriete hangplekken gevonden. Op de Vesterålen in Noord-Noorwegen is er zo'n plek waar al jaren heel wat elanden rondlopen.
Jens en Marius Birkeland werken voor Vesterålen Tours en organiseren zowat dagelijks elandsafari's op Andøya op de Vesterålen en in het hele eilanddistrict. Na heel wat magische ontmoetingen met de koningen van het bos hebben ze er zelfs voor gekozen Andøya een nieuwe bijnaam te geven.
'We hebben Andøya de bijnaam Sprookjeseiland gegeven', zeggen de broers.
En het lijkt inderdaad op een sprookjeswereld als we tijdens de safari op zoek gaan naar elanden. Je ziet dan aan de ene kant steile bergen en uitgestrekte bossen, en de open zee aan de andere.
'Ik denk niet dat er veel plaatsen in de wereld zijn waar je in een auto stapt en ze meteen kunt vinden.'

Veel elandsafari's in Noorwegen zijn met de auto, en het open landschap op Andøya is niet alleen prima geschikt voor een roadtrip, maar het is ook perfect om elanden te spotten.
Is dat een eland in m'n achtertui ...?
Elanden kunnen echt overal opduiken. En dat kan zowel tot gevaarlijke situaties als tot ongevaarlijke grappige momenten leiden.
'Je kunt ze in een achtertuin bij mensen thuis aantreffen, 'gewoon' op straat, bij een sloot of in de wildernis. Als het donker is, kunnen ze door de dorpen dwalen of zijn ze lekker aan het zwemmen in zee', vertelt Jens.
Maar elanden dwalen ook op de snelweg. Het grootste gevaar is dan dat ze plotseling voor je op de weg rennen, waardoor je weinig tot geen tijd hebt om te reageren. Daarom is het heel belangrijk om voorzichtig te rijden in gebieden waar veel elanden zijn.
Elanden spotten onder het noorderlicht
Ben je zowel dol op wilde dieren als gefascineerd door het noorderlicht? Dan klinkt een nachtelijke elandsafari onder het dansende noorderlicht je vast als muziek in de oren!
Noorwegen behoort tot de mooiste en interessantste plaatsen ter wereld om het noorderlicht te zien, en de Vesterålen liggen toevallig net onder het poollichtovaal waar de activiteit hoog is.
'Het is ongelofelijk uniek. Je krijgt de sneeuw, de elanden, de machtige bergen en het noorderlicht allemaal tegelijk te zien', aldus Marius.
Een eland ziet er sowieso al imposant uit, maar hem onder het noorderlicht of de middernachtzon zien is ronduit magisch!
Welk jaargetijde is het beste?
Elk jaargetijde heeft z'n charmes en interessante kantjes.
Volgens Jens en Marius zijn de beste maanden om op elandsafari te gaan augustus, september en oktober als het bronsttijd is. Dan krijg je de grootste stieren met hun volgroeide geweien te zien, omgeven door alle prachtige herfstkleuren.
'En dan heb je het zomerseizoen nog, dat misschien wel onze persoonlijke favoriet is omdat dan de kalfjes worden geboren', aldus Marius.
Je moet altijd een veilige afstand tot de elanden bewaren, maar wees extra voorzichtig als er kalfjes zijn. Kom niet tussen de koe en het kalf, want de moederkoe kan erg beschermend en agressief reageren.
Zoek een elandsafari
De Vesterålen is niet de enige plek waar je Noorse elanden in het echt kunt zien. Of je nou met de auto, de e-bike of te voet wilt gaan of de dieren vanuit een fotogenieke schuilplaats wilt observeren, overal in Noorwegen zijn er aanbieders van elandsafari's te vinden.
Houd er rekening mee dat elanden wilde en dus schuwe dieren zijn. Daardoor is het onmogelijk te voorspellen hoe de safari verloopt, want elke dag is anders.

En zie je een eland, dan kun je dat moment mooi vastleggen als je een camera bij de hand hebt, maar benader het dier niet! Ben je met de auto, blijf daar dan altijd dicht bij terwijl je foto's maakt. Dan krijg je nog steeds fantastische foto's. Hier zijn vijf tips voor mooiere natuurfoto's:
Tips om wilde dieren te fotograferen
• Kleed je in laagjes - laagjes kleding aandoen als je de natuur verkent is het hele jaar door een goed idee, en nog belangrijker in de winter.
• Ken het dier - bij wilde dieren fotograferen draait alles om het vastleggen van vluchtige momenten. Het loont om het gedrag van de dieren op voorhand te kunnen voorspellen.
• Windrichting - elanden liggen meestal met de wind in de rug en hun kop in de wind.
• Houd je camera paraat - gebruik een zoomlens voor de beste plaatjes. Benader deze grote en potentieel gevaarlijke dieren niet.
• Het is een kwestie van wachten - geef niet op, de beste foto's hebben tijd nodig!
Wilde dieren op de Vesterålen
Op de Vesterålen zijn er veel fascinerende wilde dieren. Je kunt mee op begeleide excursies op zoek naar adelaars, rendieren, vossen, otters en uilen - om er maar een paar te noemen.
Noorwegen is ook het koninkrijk van de walvissen. Potvissen kunnen wel 20 meter lang worden, en ze kunnen het hele jaar door langs de kust van de Vesterålen worden gespot waardoor het een prima plek is om walvissen te zien.
In de zomer is het eiland Bleiksøya in de buurt van Andøya een bedrijvig vogelreservaat, want dan vliegt hier één van de grootste papegaaiduikerskolonies van Noorwegen rond.
