Walvissen spotten in Noorwegen
Deze indrukwekkende dieren leven aan de Noorse kust en pronken voor zowel toeristen als de plaatselijke bevolking. In Noorwegen zijn potvissen, die wel 20 meter lang kunnen worden, het hele jaar door te zien langs de kust van de Vesterålen.
Aan boord van een walvissafariboot vult scherpe, schone oceaanlucht je longen terwijl de boot uitvaart vanaf de kade in Andenes. Niemand weet wat de dag in petto heeft, want net als bij elke safari zijn het de dieren die beslissen wanneer ze tevoorschijn komen. Maar de kans dat je hier walvissen zult zien, is op de Vesterålen behoorlijk groot.
Rond halverwege de winter zorgen trekkende haringen voor bultruggen, orka's en vinvissen voor de kust van Noord-Noorwegen. Voor de walvissen vormen de grote hoeveelheden van deze kleine vissen een enorm buffet. De afgelopen jaren vond dit fenomeen voornamelijk plaats in het Lyngenfjord, Tromsø en het Alta-gebied. De laatste tijd zijn er walvissen gespot in Kvænangen met een grote kans om orka's, vinvissen en bultruggen te zien. Verschillende touroperators bieden hier tochten aan om walvissen te spotten, waaronder Brim Explorer, wiens stille hybride-elektrische schepen de walvissen en de natuur zo min mogelijk verstoren.
Volgend jaar kunnen de haringen echter besluiten ergens anders naartoe te trekken en de hongerige walvissen volgen dan uiteraard ook.
Op Spitsbergen kun je zelfs het geluk hebben een glimp op te vangen van de grootste walvis ter wereld: de blauwe vinvis.
Een walvissafari is ook een mooie manier om een walvisstaart van dichtbij te bekijken en in hun natuurlijke omgeving meer te weten te komen over deze fascinerende diersoort. Sara Mesiti, bioloog en gids bij Whalesafari Andenes, hoopt dat deze ervaringen de belangstelling van mensen voor de onderwaterwereld en het behoud van de oceanen aanwakkeren.
De beste walvisspotplek ter wereld?
Andenes op de Vesterålen heeft een geografisch voordeel waardoor je het hele jaar door dichter bij de walvissen bent. De grote potvissen gedijen goed in de bijzonder voedselrijke onderwaterravijn ten noordwesten van Andenes met de naam Bleikdypet (Bleik Canyon). Volgens Sara is er geen andere plek in Scandinavië waar je tijdens zo'n korte tocht in zulk diep zeewater kunt komen, waar de kans op walvissen spotten behoorlijk groot is.
Het walvisseizoen loopt in de winter meestal van half januari tot april, en het zomerseizoen van begin mei tot begin november.
Als je op safari gaat met Whalesafari Andenes, kun je een fascinerende rondleiding krijgen in het walvismuseum dat is gevestigd in het walviscentrum. Er zijn ook safari's vanuit Stø op het puntje van Langøya op de Vesterålen. Van hieraf duurt de tocht naar de walvissen iets langer, maar als extraatje zie je misschien zeehonden op de rotsen bij de kust, want er woont een zeehondenkolonie bij het vissersdorp.
Een walvissafari is niet alleen een excursie naar de walvissen, het is een adembenemende tocht met uitzicht op de Arctische fjorden en het landschap. Als je tijdens je safari geen walvissen ziet, werken veel aanbieders met 100% walvisgarantie, waarbij ze je een nieuwe tocht aanbieden.
Bekijk een aantal walvissafari's in Noorwegen. Sommige zijn per RIB-boot, en andere met grotere boten of stille hybride-elektrische schepen.
Veiligheidsrichtlijnen
Noorwegen neemt zijn verantwoordelijkheid voor het milieu serieus en wil dat iedereen een aantal gemeenschappelijke regels volgt om de dieren en het milieu te beschermen wanneer mensen zich in de vrije natuur begeven.
Bedenk dat je in het territorium van de walvissen bent als je ze gaat spotten. Mensen die gebieden bezoeken waar ze walvissen kunnen tegenkomen, moeten zich houden aan nationale richtlijnen voor walvisspotters. Deze richtlijnen gelden voor iedereen, maar met name voor alle boten en schepen op zee en voor commerciële aanbieders.
Houd voldoende afstand zodat je de walvissen niet hindert of ze geen stress bezorgt. Je mag in geen geval proberen de walvissen aan te raken of te lokken door ze bijvoorbeeld te voeren, herrie te maken of een zaklamp te gebruiken.
Kies een aanbieder die zijn verantwoordelijkheid voor het mariene milieu neemt en de regels naleeft. Wat betreft het gebruik van drones zijn er strenge richtlijnen voor het gebruik ervan in de buurt van walvissen.

De belangrijkste publiekstrekker: potvissen
De bemanning heeft in de verte een aantal zwakke walvisklikken gehoord.
Als je de kapitein tijdens de tocht met een koptelefoon op ziet, dan komt dat omdat hij een hydrofoon gebruikt. Dat is een apparaat dat geluiden onder water uit alle richtingen detecteert en opneemt om te bepalen waar er potvissen zijn. Ze staan bekend als de luidruchtigste dieren ter wereld, en hun klikgeluiden zijn op wel 3 tot 4 zeemijlen afstand hoorbaar.
Het zijn ook meesterduikers die dieptes tot wel 2.000 meter kunnen halen! Walvissen kunnen wel anderhalf uur onder water blijven, en als ze eenmaal aan de oppervlakte zwemmen, rusten ze daar zo'n 8 minuten uit. Je kunt potvissen vanuit de lucht ook herkennen aan hun spuitgaten, want die staan naar links in een hoek van 45 graden.
Het laatste wat je ziet is de staart die recht omhoog de lucht in wijst (dit is het moment om snel een foto te maken!) voordat de potvis weer in de diepte verdwijnt.
De walvissen zijn dan wel weer onder het wateroppervlak, maar er zijn nog genoeg andere dingen te zien.
De 7 beste tips als je walvissen gaat spotten
• Blijf warm. Kleed je in laagjes en neem waterdichte spullen mee.
• Houd je camera paraat en gebruik een zoomlens voor de beste plaatjes.
• Laat je lens even zakken en geniet van het spectaculaire uitzicht dat alleen Noord-Noorwegen je kan bieden.
• Maak een praatje met de bemanning. Ze delen graag hun kennis over de verschillende walvissoorten en waar je op moet letten.
• Wees geduldig. De kapitein en de bemanning verklappen je graag hun voorspellingen over waar de walvissen de volgende keer zullen opduiken.
• Neem 1 tot 2 uur voor vertrek medicijnen tegen misselijkheid als de kans bestaat dat je zeeziek wordt.
• Neem wat snacks mee. Hartige zoals crackers en chips zijn het beste, want die helpen tegen misselijkheid.
Wilde dieren in de Vesterålen
Tijdens je walvissafari kom je waarschijnlijk ook andere fascinerende dieren tegen.
De vogels langs de kust van Andøya zijn ongelooflijk. Heb jij deze kleine unieke vogels al eens in het echt gezien? Het eiland Bleiksøya is een vogelreservaat met heel wat leven in de brouwerij. In de zomer herbergt het één van de grootste papegaaiduikerskolonies van Noorwegen! Ook nestelen hier alken, zeekoeten, zwarte zeekoeten en aalscholvers.
