Laten we gaan vissen
Houd je goed vast terwijl de RIB-boot de Barentszzee invaart vanaf de kust. Met een warme overall, een veiligheidsbril en wanten zit je altijd goed, ongeacht het weer in het noorden.

We zijn net buiten de kust van Kirkenes in Zuid-Varanger in Noord-Noorwegen. Dit is een van de belangrijkste havens voor het vangen van koningskrab in de Barentszzee.
Vanuit hier worden luxe krabben wereldwijd geëxporteerd naar toprestaurants, waaronder natuurlijk een aantal heerlijke Noorse zeevruchtenrestaurants.
Het is een ware delicatesse om te genieten van perfecte bereide koningskrab in een luxe restaurant. Maar hij is ook heerlijk om vers uit de zee geserveerd te krijgen. Vooral wanneer jij hebt geholpen bij de vangst!

Je realiseert je niet hoe enorm een koningskrab is totdat je er eentje voor je hebt.

“Nu moeten we kijken of het een mannetje of een vrouwtje is. Op safari's is het niet toegestaan om de vrouwtjes te houden, om overbevissing te voorkomen.”
“Er is ook een minimumgrens voor het formaat. Alles kleiner dan 13 centimeter gaat weer terug de zee in.”
Het vinden van krabben die wel groot genoeg zijn is geen enkel probleem. Kijk dit monster!
Heerlijke reuzen
De koningskrab is relatief nieuw in Noorwegen en het duurde tot 1977 voordat de eerste koningskrab hier werd gevangen. Destijds stond hij in Noorwegen bekend als de Kamtsjatka-krab, vernoemd naar het schiereiland op de oostkust van Siberië.
De koningskrab die nu buiten Noorwegen leeft komt van oorsprong van het fjord Moermansk, waar ze in de jaren 60 door Sovjetbiologen werden vrijgelaten. Sindsdien heeft de populatie zich uitgebreid naar Noord-Noorwegen, waar ze zich uitstekend thuis voelen in het koude water.
“Er bestaan meer dan een honderd soorten koningskrab. De rode koningskrab is de twee na grootste soort en ook van de meest gegeten soorten”, zegt Michael, koningskrab safarigids bij Snowhotel Kirkenes.
Koningskrab is zoet en aromatisch, waardoor het vaak wordt vergeleken met kreeft. Volgens Michael is het lekkerste deel de schouder.
“De schouderspier is de filet van de koningskrab. Het is het meest malse vlees van de krab”, zegt Michael.
Wil je het zelf proeven? De meeste koningskrab safari's omvatten veel kansen om te proeven. Anders gezegd, krijg je veel waar voor je geld, aangezien de koningskrab vaak een van de duurste gerechten op de kaart is.

Verser dan dit wordt het niet. Direct uit de zee, bereid bij de werf en gegeten in een traditionele rorbu, oftewel vissershut.
Als dit de eerste keer is dat je koningskrab probeert, laten de gidsen je zien hoe je de poten kunt eten.
Voilà! Geniet van de vangst van die dag op brood met mayonaise en een paar druppels citroensap.
