Een schilderachtige roadtrip op Andøya
Andøya ligt in het uiterste noorden van Vesterålen, in Noord‑Noorwegen.
De toeristische route Andøya loopt langs de westkust van het eiland, van Andenes in het noorden tot Bjørnskinn in het zuiden.
Je kunt bij één van de vliegvelden een auto huren of bij een van de lokale hotels een fiets. De 58 kilometer lange route is ideaal om te fietsen, zonder klimetappes, en voert je langs een spannend en gevarieerd kustlandschap.
Widerøe vliegt vanuit Tromsø en Bodø naar luchthaven Andøya, en regionaal vliegveld Evenes ligt op maar twee uur rijden. In de zomer vliegt luchtvaartmaatschappij Norwegian rechtstreeks van Oslo naar Andøya.
Hurtigruten doet het hele jaar door twee keer per dag de haven van Risøyhamn op Andøya aan. En in de zomer vaart er dagelijks een veerboot tussen Andenes op Andøya en Gryllefjord op Senja.
Er rijden ook bussen vanuit Sortland, de Lofoten en Narvik.

We beginnen in Andenes, de grootste stad van Andøya.
Heb je een walvissafari op de planning staan, dan moet je in Andenes zijn.
Noord-Noorwegen en met name de Vesterålen hebben de beste walvissafari's ter wereld, want de kans op walvissen spotten is heel groot!
Weer aan wal maken we in de buurt van Andenes we een omweggetje... naar de ruimte!
Op het eiland staat de enige permanente lanceerbasis van Noorwegen: Andøya Space.
In het bezoekerscentrum Spaceship Aurora kun je zelf ervaren hoe het is om je eigen raket te lanceren en kom je alles te weten over het fascinerende noorderlicht!
Onze volgende stop is Kleivodden, een verzorgingsplaats aan de voet van een aantal heel steile bergen.
Hier heb je een prachtig uitzicht op het Bleikstrand, het kegelvormige eiland Bleiksøya en op de eindeloze horizon.
Aan het einde van de donkere en enige tunnel op Andøya...
... kom uit bij dit witte zandstrand!
Bleikstranda lijkt wel op een scène uit Lord of the Rings, want het is de ideale plek om in de winter het noorderlicht te fotograferen en in de zomer de middernachtzon.
Vanaf het Bleikstrand zie je het kegelvormige eiland Bleikøya liggen.
In de zomer is het eiland een levendig vogelreservaat, want dan vliegt hier één van de grootste papegaaiduikerskolonies van Noorwegen rond. Maak het zelf van dichtbij mee tijdens een begeleide vogelsafari.
Let tijdens je bezoek ook op de imposante zeearenden die door de lucht scheren!
Deze organisatie biedt ook vistochten aan. Diepzeevissen in Noord-Noorwegen is echt een avontuur.
Heb je tijd en laat het weer het toe, neem dan een lunchpakketje mee en ga naar Røyken, de berg die boven Bleik uittorent.
Het kost niet veel moeite om boven te komen, en er staat je een geweldig uitzicht te wachten op het Bleikstrand, het charmante dorpje Andenes en op vlakke moerassen vol kruipbramen.
Zin in een wandeling? Loop dan de 9 kilometer lange kustroute van Bleik naar Stave.
De route slingert door moerassige gebieden, langs de rotsachtige kustlijn, stranden en natuurlijk door de bergen.
De berg Måtind is het hoogste punt aan de kust. Dit is dan ook de plek met het beste uitzicht.
Eenmaal aangekomen in het dorp Stave kun je meteen naar de warme zwembaden en strandsauna's op de camping, waar je de golven kunt horen. Een ervaring die je lichaam en geest gegarandeerd tot rust brengt!
De volgende bezienswaardigheid is zeker een bezoekje waard, zelfs als je niet dringend moet :)
Noorwegen heeft een aantal van de meest bijzondere toiletten ter wereld, waaronder deze bij de rotsformatie Bukkekjerka. Via de eenzijdige spiegel kun je genieten van een panoramisch uitzicht op zee terwijl je op je gemak je grote of kleine boodschap doet.
En als je er dan toch bent, loop dan even naar de kleine vuurtoren Børhella fyr in de buurt van de parkeerplaats.
Je ziet de kronkelende weg op de achtergrond.
Je kunt het einde van je uitstap aan de zuidwestkant van het eiland afsluiten bij Marmelkroken. Dit landelijke natuurresort biedt comfortabele overnachtingsmogelijkheden, heerlijk eten en spannende activiteiten.
Dankzij de architectonische schuilplaats voor vloedwater kun je bij alle weersomstandigheden genieten van de Arctische natuur. En misschien spot je zelfs wel vogels uit het Noordpoolgebied!
Een deel van de oostkant van het eiland verkennen is ook een aanrader.
In Dverberg vind je het leuke winkeltje en café met de naam Alveland (Elfenland) dat is gespecialiseerd in natuurlijke producten, handgemaakte zeepjes en heerlijke versgebakken kaneelbroodjes.
En vergeet eenmaal terug in Andenes ook de vuurtoren van Andenes niet - het iconische herkenningspunt van de streek. Met z'n hoogte van 40 meter is het één van de hoogste vuurtorens van Noorwegen!
Andenes heeft ook winkels, restaurants en prima overnachtingsmogelijkheden.
