High On Fire
The metal legends High on Fire come to USF Verftet Tickets on sale from Wednesday 4 February at 11.00. No mercy, no filter: High on Fire come to Bergen on 18 August. When they take over USF Verftet, the stage is set for an evening of uncompromising metal and raw power of a rare caliber. The band from Oakland, with Matt Pike at the helm, is known for heavy riffs, raw energy and an expression that has always gone its own way – far from the polished and predictable. In 2019, High on Fire were awarded a Grammy for Best Metal Performance for the album Electric Messiah, securing their well-deserved place among metal’s biggest names. The award brought increased attention to the band, without changing what has always defined them: an uncompromising musical expression and complete dedication to their own style. With drummer Coady Willis on board, High on Fire have further developed their sound, something that is clearly evident on their latest album Cometh the Storm. The record appears as both a continuation and a renewal of the band’s core: brutal heaviness, driving tempo and a dark, almost apocalyptic atmosphere. On stage, High on Fire are an experience – a massive wall of riffs, pounding drums and an intense presence that hits you right in the gut. This is sweaty, loud and uncompromising metal craftsmanship delivered by a band that lives for the moment on stage. When the lights go down at USF Verftet on 18 August at 20.00, only one thing matters: pure, unfiltered power. Secure your ticket, and be there when High on Fire set Bergen ablaze. - BoekenBergen15.08.2026

Otis Gibbs (US)
Otis Gibbs is finally back - and on 25 August he comes to Lille Ole Bull! After many years of absence and countless questions it is finally confirmed: Otis Gibbs returns and on 25 August he comes to Lille Ole Bull. The singer and songwriter from Wanamaker, Indiana, has long had a dedicated audience at home, and the reunion has been missed. Otis Gibbs is far more than a traditional songwriter. In addition to the music he has found success as a visual artist, podcast host and programme creator. The podcast Thanks For Giving A Damn quickly became a favourite and led further to the Pandora series Country Built, which today reaches millions of listeners. He has also built up a strong presence on YouTube. Musically Otis Gibbs is rooted in the American storytelling tradition, with roots in artists such as Woody Guthrie, Joe Hill and Bruce Springsteen. He sings about people and stories from a working, unfinished America – seen from a consistent underdog perspective. His lyrics are about work, travel, longing and the realities of life, conveyed with honesty and warmth. With a dozen albums behind him, and the critically acclaimed release The Trust of Crows as his latest, Otis Gibbs is a rare and authentic voice. That he now returns makes these concerts a truly special occasion. This concert is part of the concert series Bergen Live Sessions. - BoekenBergen22.08.2026
Ståle Kleiberg i samtale om Debussys musikk og poesi
About the conversation (The conversation will be held in Norwegian) In this conversation with composer and professor emeritus Ståle Kleiberg, we take a closer look at how French Symbolist poetry can serve as a gateway to understanding Debussy’s music. Debussy set to music many poems by the leading poets of his time, such as Stéphane Mallarmé, Charles Baudelaire, and Paul Verlaine. In these songs, poetry and music are closely intertwined. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Debussy does not use music to describe the literal content of the poetry. The aim is not to realistically “depict,” for example, a forest. In Debussy’s own words, the mysteries of the forest cannot be revealed by measuring the height of the trees. Rather than portraying the forest itself in his music, Debussy uses musical symbols to convey a person’s response to being in the forest. With this, he ushered in a new chapter in music history. Which techniques does Debussy use to achieve this? What are these musical symbols? These questions will be the focus of a conversation that takes us inside Debussy’s music and the poetry he set to music. The conversation can be combined with a concert of Debussy’s songs immediately following the talk. Find tickets and more information in our calendar. About the participants Ståle Kleiberg is a central Norwegian composer with significant international recognition. His music is frequently performed both in Norway and abroad, and most of his works have been commissioned by leading orchestras, ensembles, and performers. Numerous recordings of Kleiberg’s music have been released, receiving outstanding international reviews and several Grammy nominations. Kleiberg’s music is characterized by a personal and distinctive form of extended tonality and by a meticulous approach to timbral detail. This is particularly evident in his orchestral output, which includes three symphonies, symphonic poems, and a number of solo concertos. Kleiberg is professor emeritus of musicology and composition at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim. Karina Valnumsen Hansen is Senior Curator of Music at the Kode Art Museums and Composer Homes. She holds a PhD in musicology from NTNU, focusing on politics and declamation practices in W. A. Mozart’s German operas. After completing her doctorate, she served as an associate professor in musicology at NTNU before beginning a postdoctoral position at the University of Heidelberg, Germany. Her research fields include music and politics, Mozart’s biography and music, 18th-century opera, Norwegian vocal music of the 19th century, and musical declamation practices in the 18th and 19th centuries. Håkon Magnar Skogstad: 24 Variations for piano
About the concert In this lecture-recital, award-winning pianist Håkon Magnar Skogstad presents music from his latest album, 24 Variations for Piano. The work is inspired by classical forms and draws impulses from well-known composers from Frits Thaulow’s era, such as Debussy, Ravel, Grieg, Liszt, Mussorgsky, and Rachmaninoff, as well as earlier composers like Chopin and Bach. Skogstad combines these influences with inspiration from Argentine tango style and Astor Piazzolla. The result is a unique work that continues the fusion of musical impulses also found in Debussy’s music. Skogstad’s lecture-recital grows out of his doctoral research project, in which he recreated the romantic–impressionist playing style of the Catalan-Spanish pianist Ricardo Viñes—the pianist who premiered Debussy’s and Ravel’s piano music in Paris around 1900. This lecture-recital offers a rare opportunity to experience this vibrant legacy associated with, among others, Thaulow and Debussy. About the artist Håkon Magnar Skogstad is an award-winning pianist and composer with formal training in classical performance from Oslo and New York. In 2022, he completed a PhD in artistic research at NTNU in Trondheim. Skogstad has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in Norway, the USA, Argentina, Germany, Spain, Austria, and Sweden. He has composed several large-scale commissioned works, and his tango-inspired album Concerto for Piano and String Orchestra received the 2021 Spellemann Award in the classical music category. BLEKK presenterer: ARIANA REINES! I samtale med Anna Kleiva og Eira Søyseth
BLEKK presents: ARIANA REINES! In conversation with Anna Kleiva and Eira Søyseth. Ariana Reines, one of the most influential poets of our time, is making a stop in Bergen in August! Over the past two years, Ariana Reines has published two new books: Wave of Blood, coming out in Norwegian translation by Anna Kleiva with the publisher HOF in August, and The Rose. The two books differ both formally and thematically, yet at the same time they interweave, revealing the range of Reines' authorship. While Wave of Blood is an essayistic-poetic exploration of genocide, guilt, language, and the public sphere, and how all of this connects to the body, The Rose is a poetry collection of a more traditional format. It takes on one of the greatest poetic motifs: love and the poetic symbolism associated with love, taking the rose as its starting point. During the event in Bergen, there will be readings from and conversation about both books. Feel free to bring your own questions related to the publications, as we will also open the floor up to questions and an extended conversation in the second part. We look forward to Arianas visit! Ariana Reines works within poetry, theatre, performance, and astrology. Her poetry engages in dialogue with contemporary events and rhetoric, as well as ancient texts. Anna Kleiva is a Norwegian poet and translator. Her most recent book is Triks (2025). She has translated several of Reines's books into Norwegian. Eira Søyseth is also a Norwegian poet and translator. She is the editor of Blekk, and her most recent book is Fellesskapsmonsteret (2026). Leon Majcen (US) og Zandi Holup (US)
Leon Majcen and Zandi Holup at Lille Ole Bull 18 August Leon Majcen is the son of Bosnian refugees, grew up in Florida and has roots deeply planted in the American folk and songwriting tradition. Inspired by storytellers such as Townes Van Zandt, John Prine, Bob Dylan and Guy Clark, he has since his record debut in 2020 established himself as a productive and personal voice within folk and americana. With four albums in five years, as well as a number of singles and EPs, Majcen has built a strong repertoire that grows in both weight and expression with each release and each concert. His latest album, Making A Livin' (Not a Killin'), is inspired by a life on the road and is considered his most honest to date – filled with songs about travel, farewells, work and the people you meet along the way. The music balances the intimate and acoustic with a larger and more dynamic soundscape, and live Leon Majcen is an engaging and present storyteller. Holup has broken through with her expressive, melancholic vocals and debut album Wildflower (2025). When they visit Lille Ole Bull on Tuesday 18 August, everything is in place for an intimate and atmospheric concert experience in classic troubadour spirit. Two strong voices with clear personality and great ability to communicate. This concert is part of the concert series Bergen Live Sessions. - BoekenBergen14.08.2026
