Hiking route: the geographical midpoint of Norway
Take a Trip to Norway’s Geographical midpoint. Here, you can enjoy the tranquillity of nature and recharge both body and mind. The trail is slightly uphill, but the terrain is easy to walk through. This is an ideal day trip for those looking for a refreshing outdoor adventure. Day Trip to Norway’s Geographical Centre Park your car at the Lustadvatnet car park, located 40 km from Steinkjer town centre. This is the starting point for reaching Norway’s geographical centre and the Blåfjella-Skjækerfjella National Park. The trail to Norway’s geographical centre is well-marked and consists of wooden railway sleepers. The round trip distance is 20 km, which takes approximately five hours to complete. Along the way, you can take in the stunning views of Skjækerfjella, located within the national park. Upon reaching Norway’s geographical midpoint, we recommend a meal break at the rustic shelter / lean to, where there is a designated fire pit. After a well-deserved rest, the journey continues back to the car park. This trip is also an excellent starting point for multi-day hikes, with several overnight options available near the midpoint. Cabin Rentals Near the Centre Steinkjer Kommuneskoger and Snåsa Fjellstyre offer rental cabins near Norway’s geographical midpoint, which you can easily book through inatur.n. Lustadstua Skjækerhytta Lågvassbua Skækerosstua Experiences nearby If you’re looking for a great meal and an overnight stay, Mokk Farm is located just 3 km from the car park. Upon arrival at Mokk Farm, you’ll have time to shower and relax before dinner. It is also possible to hire a guide to accompany you on the hike. If you’d like to add some extra activities before or after your trip to Norway’s geographical midpoint, Mokk Farm offers guided cave tours, visits to old copper mines, and canoe trips. Norway’s Geographical Centre Declared by the Norwegian Mapping Authority as Norway’s geographical centre of mass, the point is located in Steinkjer Municipality. To calculate the centre, the total area of mainland Norway, including islands but excluding Svalbard and Jan Mayen, is taken into account. This method can be visualised by cutting out a map of Norway along the national borders and coastline, imagining the islands connected by weightless bridges, and balancing the map on the point of a compass. See more about the hike at Ut.no where you also find a zoomable map. Enjoy your trip!SteinkjerBølareinen rock carvings
Bølareinen (a reindeer) is one of the most famous rock carvings in Norway. It is part of a larger carving, where in addition to Bølareinen, you will see a bear, a seabird and a skier. The Bølarein looms on an almost vertical cliff, where it has been guarding its surroundings for approx. 6000 years. And the reindeer is not alone in this landscape. There are carvings of bears, elk and birds - all naturalistic hunted animals in full size. These are typical motives among our oldest carvings. Quite unusual is the around 150 cm tall human figure with a stick in his hand and skis or snowshoes on his feet. The rock surface with this figure came out of the sea around 6,000 years ago, and the Bøla Man could in theory be as old. At the time, Snåsavatnet was part of the Trondheim Fjord. The sea level went just below where the carvings are located 35-40 m above present sea level. The rich hunting opportunities in the area must have seemed attractive to people of that time. Pitfalls for elks and discovery of charcoal and flint shows that they stayed in the area over time. Although the rock surfaces have weathered the stress of water, wind and rain for thousands of years, it is still possible to see traces of activity from people who lived during the Stone Age at Bøla. Hiking in the Bøla area is a great opportunity to get close to a time that is infinitely distant from ours. Directions The rock carvings are located on the southeast side of Snåsavatnet by Route 763, approx . 30 km southwest of Steinkjer. Good parking facilities and access to the field from a prepared path, also for wheelchair users. Walking distance from the main road, approx. 300 meters. Bøla Cafe Bøla Cafe is open during the summer season.InderøyInderøy Mosteri

Snåsa's mountain farms invite you to unforgettable experiences in Snåsa's picturesque mountain landscapes! Every summer, between 10 and 15 farms open their doors, offering you the chance to immerse yourself in the unique charm of traditional mountain farm life. The first farms open in early June, while the last remain open until the end of August. Here, cows graze on pure, fresh, and herb-rich mountain grass, which lends a distinctive quality to the milk and traditional farm products. Throughout the summer, you can experience this special way of life and savour authentic, handcrafted farm products. At the farms, you can interact with various animals, enjoy locally sourced, wholesome food, and learn captivating cultural history. Many visitors also find a rare sense of tranquility on the farm meadows and in the mountains—a peace that's hard to encounter elsewhere. The farms are scattered across the municipality, from the forests to the mountains. Some are accessible by car, while others require a short walk, making them suitable for all ages. Mountain farming - a vital part of agriculture In addition to being an attraction for visitors, mountain farming has deep roots in Snåsa's agricultural history. In the 18th and 19th centuries, over 300 farms operated in the area during the summer months. However, as agriculture evolved, mountain farming nearly ceased by 1960. Nevertheless, remnants of old farm meadows and buildings remain as cultural landmarks in the landscape, sparking renewed interest in the mountain farming lifestyle. UNESCO's cultural heritage list This rich tradition received a significant boost when the mountain farming culture of Norway and Sweden was inscribed on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage in 2024. This represents global recognition of mountain farming's role in preserving both cultural and ecological heritage. With roots stretching back centuries, mountain farming has been an indispensable part of life in Norway's and Sweden's forest and mountain regions. It has not only sustained food production and sustainability but also fostered a cultural community, particularly for the women who managed and preserved these traditions. From milk production on mountain pastures to the conservation of diverse ecosystems, mountain farming has been a cornerstone in shaping regional identity and ecological balance. Through a six-year collaboration between Norsk Seterkultur and Förbundet Svensk Fäbodkultur och utmarksbruk, the diversity of mountain farming has been highlighted. Over 100 organisations from both countries supported the nomination, motivated by reasons ranging from food security and animal welfare to women's culture and outdoor experiences. This UNESCO recognition is not only a significant achievement for farmers but also for society and the global community. As Siv Beate Eggen from Eggjasetra stated, "This is just the beginning!" Now, it's up to all of us to support and safeguard this invaluable piece of our shared cultural heritage for future generations. Cheers to the mountain farming culture!SnåsaSaemien Sijte - South Sami Museum and Cultural Centre
