Sport
Bloed, zweet en gejuich
Noren houden wel van competitief sporten, van skiën en snowboarden in de winter tot hiken en fietsen in de zomer.
Er vinden in heel Noorwegen een groot aantal sportevenementen van wereldklasse plaats. Hieronder vind je een lijst met een aantal van de grootste en populairste evenementen.
Holmenkollen Skifestival
Dit is een van de meest prestigieuze wintersportevenementen ter wereld, met skispringen, langlaufen en Scandinavische gecombineerde evenementen. Het evenement vindt elk jaar in maart plaats in Oslo en trekt duizenden toeschouwers.
Naast de wedstrijden biedt het festival vele activiteiten voor bezoekers, waaronder skilessen, rondleidingen en culturele evenementen. Bezoekers kunnen ook schansspringen proberen op een kleinere schans die is ontworpen voor beginners.
Birkebeinerrennet
Dit is een langlaufwedstrijd die in maart plaatsvindt tussen de steden Rena en Lillehammer. De wedstrijd is 54 kilometer lang en trekt jaarlijks meer dan 15.000 deelnemers.
De sfeer tijdens de Birkebeinerrennet-race is bijzonder, met duizenden toeschouwers die de skiërs aanmoedigen terwijl ze zich een weg banen door het parcours. De race is een echte test van vastberadenheid, doorzettingsvermogen en kracht. Hierdoor krijgen de racers die de finish halen een ongelooflijk gevoel van voldoening.
Er worden tijdens de zomermaanden ook een hardloopwedstrijd en een motorrace georganiseerd.
Ekstremsportveko
Ekstremsportveko, ook bekend als de Extreme Sports Week, is een jaarlijks evenement dat wordt gehouden in Voss, Noorwegen. Het is een van de grootste en meest gerenommeerde extreme sportfestivals ter wereld. Ekstremsportveko brengt atleten, enthousiastelingen en toeschouwers van over de hele wereld samen om deel te nemen aan en getuige te zijn van een breed scala aan opwindende activiteiten.
Het evenement vindt eind juni plaats en je kunt deelnemen aan of kijken naar extreme sporten zoals paragliden, longboarden, raften, klimmen, basejumpen en nog veel meer.
Midnight Sun Marathon
De Midnight Sun Marathon is een jaarlijks hardloopevenement dat plaatsvindt in Tromsø, een stad in het uiterste noorden van Noorwegen. Het staat bekend als een van de meest unieke en pittoreske marathons ter wereld, vanwege de locatie en de timing van de race.
Het evenement vindt eind juni plaats, wanneer de zon niet ondergaat in Tromsø, waardoor er een magische sfeer ontstaat met de zon die de hele nacht fel schijnt. De race biedt verschillende afstanden, waaronder een volledige marathon, een halve marathon, een race van 10 kilometer en een race voor kinderen.
Norway Cup
Norway Cup is een internationaal jeugdvoetbaltoernooi dat jaarlijks wordt gehouden in Oslo. Het is een van de grootste voetbaltoernooien voor jonge spelers ter wereld en trekt teams van over de hele wereld aan. Het evenement vindt eind juli gedurende meer dan een week plaats en is sinds de oprichting in 1972 een prominent onderdeel van de internationale jeugdvoetbalkalender.
Naast de voetbalwedstrijden biedt de Norway Cup een scala aan culturele en sociale activiteiten, waardoor de hele week een feestelijke sfeer wordt gecreëerd.
Arctic Race of Norway
Dit is een professionele wielerwedstrijd die elk jaar in augustus in het noorden van Noord-Noorwegen plaatsvindt. De race beslaat enkele van de mooiste landschappen van Noorwegen en trekt toprenners van over de hele wereld aan.
De Arctic Race of Norway is meer dan alleen een wielerwedstrijd; het is een viering van de verbluffende natuurlijke schoonheid en unieke cultuur van Noord-Noorwegen. Het biedt zowel fietsers als toeschouwers een onvergetelijke ervaring in een van de mooiste en meest afgelegen uithoeken van Europa.
De Norseman Xtreme Triathlon
De Norseman Xtreme Triathlon in augustus wordt beschouwd als een van de zwaarste triatlons ter wereld. De race start bij het Hardangerfjord, waar deelnemers van een veerboot springen en 3,8 kilometer naar de kust zwemmen. Het fietstraject bestaat uit 180 kilometer uitdagend terrein, inclusief een klim naar de beroemde 'Zombie Hill' - een steile klim van 10 kilometer met hellingspercentages tot 10 procent. De laatste etappe van de race bestaat uit een marathonloop, met de finishlijn op de top van de berg Gaustatoppen, die 1.850 meter boven de zeespiegel ligt.
De race heeft een unieke opzet, zonder hulpposten of externe ondersteuning. Deelnemers zijn verplicht om al hun eigen uitrusting, voedsel en water mee te nemen en hebben een supportteam nodig om hen onderweg te helpen.
Oslo Marathon
Dit is een populair hardloopevenement voor lange afstanden dat plaatsvindt in september. Het parcours loopt door de straten van Oslo en passeert veel van de beroemde bezienswaardigheden van de stad.
De marathon trekt verschillende soorten deelnemers, van toplopers die een snelle tijd nastreven tot beginnende marathonlopers die de afstand voor de eerste keer willen afleggen. Het evenement staat open voor deelnemers van alle niveaus en leeftijden, en de inclusieve sfeer is een belangrijk onderdeel van de aantrekkingskracht van het evenement.

An attraction and tradition in Bergen! Spend a full day and join a walk on the seven mountains surronding Bergen. The total hike is 35 kilometers and the ascent is around 2400 meters. The start is at Gravdal (by Nutec) between 05:30 and 09:15 and you walk the following mountains: Lyderhorn, Damsgårdsfjellet, Løvstakken, Ulriken, Fløyen, Rundemann, Sandviksfjellet and the end is at Skansemyren. If seven mountains is a bit too much, then there is a 4 mountain obtion. The 4-mountains Hike starts at Årstad and you walk over Ulriken, Fløyen, Rundemanen and Sandviksfjellet. The legendary Birkebeiner ski race (Birkebeinerrennet), a unique ski race over two mountain (53 km) The legendary Birkebeiner ski race is a cross-country race starts at Rena, and finish at Birkebeiner Ski Stadium in the Olympic town of Lillehammer. The 53 km, classic technic, race crosses two mountains, and the track takes you through breathtaking sceneries. All participants must carry a backpack weighing at least 3.5 kg throughout the race. The Lillehammer region has a very stable climate with good winters and a lot of snow. The mountains and the meeting with Norwegian nature makes Birken attractive to foreigners as well as to Norwegians. With its track, wild snow, profile and demanding mountains makes it a real challenge to all XC skiers and a rite of passage under tough conditions. The Birkebeiner races - the historical background The Birkebeiner races are based on the historic event of the rescue of Haakon Haakonsson. There was a civil war in Norway. After the birkebeiner chieftain Haakon died on New Years Day in 1204, the baglers saw a dangerous rival pretender in his son Haakon Haakonsson , who was born in 1204, a few weeks after his fathers death. His life was at stake, and the birkebeiners wanted to bring him to safety in Trondheim. The party came to a small farm at Lillehammer, where they stayed in hiding over Christmas. They found it too risky to follow the route up the Gudbrandsdal valley, so they cut across the mountains to the neighbour valley in east, Østerdalen. Due to bad weather and difficult snow conditions the two best skiers. The 3,5 kilo pack carried by the present day birkebeiners symbolizes the prince, who later became king Haakon. He made an end of the civil war, and under him Norway had a heyday in the Middle Age. The birkebeiner expedition made history.

The ”Fjord classic” Bergen-Voss is not only one of Norway’s biggest and bestknown cyclosportive events, but also one of the world’s most scenic tours. Each year cyclists of all abilities take part in this unique race, each with different goals and expectations. The 170 km route follows fjords and mountains between the coastal town of Bergen in western Norway, and the ski resort of Voss. Bergen-Voss is breathtakingly beautiful. Bergen-based Hardanger fiddle player, composer, and award-winning performer Benedicte Maurseth, Kode's Composer-in-Residence for 2026, brings her unique musical universe to the historic outdoor bath Nordnes Sjøbad to create a special session for floating listeners – Borealis' annual concert ritual Music for Sea Bathing. In recent years, Benedicte Maurseth's creative work has largely focused on themes related to biodiversity and ecosophy. The inspiration for her previous works has often come from her home region at Hardangervidda in Eidfjord, where concrete sounds from mountain folk and wildlife have been key elements in the compositions, based on her background in Norwegian folk music and inspired by minimalism and free improvisation. In the Borealis commission Paragorgia, she explores aquatic biodiversity connected to the Hardanger Fjord, Norway's second-longest fjord, an environment that is both vulnerable and under high pressure. Paragorgia is the name of the slow-growing, colorful sea tree considered near-threatened, which lives in deep fjords and seas. The tree can grow several meters tall and form coral forests that are important habitats for other species. In Paragorgia, Maurseth combines Hardanger fiddle, vocals, and compositional ideas with rhythmic and melodic percussion, synthesizer, and electronic sounds, in collaboration with one of Norway's leading percussionists, Håkon Mørch Stene. Together, they honor and interpret the horn coral paragorgia, as well as other vital ecosystems such as coral reefs, bamboo coral, plankton, and other species native to the Hardanger Fjord. Welcome to the final round of the 2026 World Snowcross Championship in Trondheim and Granåsen arena 10th/11th of April 🏁 The Snowcross World Championship in Granåsen will be one of the region’s major winter sports highlights of the year. The world’s best snowcross riders will gather for action-packed World Championship races in the heart of Trondheim – delivering high intensity, a true festival atmosphere, and significant international attention. The event is jointly organized by the clubs MK Trondhjem, Selbu MK and NMK Verdal/Levanger through the company SNX Granåsen AS. Elias Ishoel, the 2025 World Champion who has competed professionally in the USA in recent years, will be involved in building the track to ensure a modern World Championship circuit with high speeds and big, aerial jumps. An estimated 70–100 riders from many different nationalities are expected to participate. There will also be a guest class / exhibition for children aged 5–10 years, meaning that in addition to the world elite, spectators will have the opportunity to see the next generation of riders showcase their skills on the arena. As part of the World Championship program, a Freestyle SNX show will also take place. This segment will be especially spectacular as André Villa – one of the world’s most accomplished FMX athletes – joins the event as an advisor and creative developer. Villa will contribute to the design of an adrenaline-filled freestyle show, set to become one of the event’s major crowd highlights. The FanZone will feature exhibitions and stands, activities, food and beverage sales, and plenty of entertainment taking place inside the “World Championship Tent”. In the evenings, the World Championship Tent will host entertainment and music, culminating on Saturday night with a live concert by Melody Market. Alex Rosén, well known from NRK, will be present throughout the entire World Championship weekend, contributing as a stunt reporter, occasional speaker, and helping to create energy and excitement both on the arena and inside the World Championship Tent.

This summer's greatest running event! Stavanger Marathon is organised by the athletics club GTI Friidrettsklubb. It's one day with several running options in terms of distance and level. Stavanger Marathon has its start and finish line at the square outside the Stavanger Cathedral, the oldest cathedral in Norway and from the first half of the 1100s. With great variation in length and route, the Stavanger Marathon provides a challenge suitable for all! The different options are children's race, 5 kilometres, half marathon and marathon.

Tough race up the rough stone stairway from Fjellveien to Sandvikspilen. Sandviksfjellet is a mountain in Bergen, and one of the traditional seven mountains that surround the city centre of Bergen. The mountain is 392 m high. Are you fit enough and over 12 years of age, you are welcome to participate. It is not necessary to be member of any sports team / organization. First time in 1979 there were 50 participants. Now more than 5000 people participate! The track has a gradient of 315.5 meters and consists of 801 steps.

A brutal uphill race with over 300 meters of vertical gain—no breaks, no variation, just 800 meters of relentless climbing. Are you ready for the challenge? Where does it start? Runners start inside the tunnel at the bottom of the Fløibanen track with 10-second interval starts. Open class starts at 18:15, and the seeded group around 19:45. Start orders will guide you to your place and organize you according to your start number. Does Fløibanen close? Fløibanen will be closed during the event from 18:00 to 20:30. The last departure before the closure is at 18:00 (stopping at intermediate stations). The next departure after the race is at 20:30 (stopping at intermediate stations). The route continues up Skotbergkleivane to Montana and then up to "Store steinen" and Oppstemten, with the finish line at Ulriken's summit (upper station of the Ulriken Cable Car). This race has individual starts at 10-second intervals. Drevelin Stormfuglen Trail A trail run starting at Montana and ending at the top of Ulriken. The race covers 5.4 km through varied terrain around Landåsfjellet, including trails, gravel, rough terrain, and elevation changes (mostly uphill). The race has a mass start from Montana at 12:00. Montana Classic Begins at Montana and follows the gravel road up “Oppstemten” to Ulriken. This is the classic event introduced in 2007, featuring both recreational and family participation categories. The recreational class starts at 11:30 (mass start). The family class (without timed tracking) allows flexible start times between 10:00 and 12:00, outside the mass start. Results are sorted by category as well as by gender (Men and Women). Experience a refreshing evening at Skomakerdiket! Just a short walk from Fløibanen’s upper station, along the path between the trees, you’ll find the lake Skomakerdiket. Join us at this idyllic spot and dip into the fresh, cold water. If you haven’t tried winter bathing before, this is your chance to give it a go in safe surroundings together with other enthusiastic bathers. Afterwards, warm up inside the cozy Skomakerstuen, where a delicious soup will be waiting for you by the fireplace. Bring swimwear, bathing shoes/socks, and a towel/bathrobe, and meet us at Skomakerdiket. We are there from 16:00–19:00, so you can join whenever it suits you within that time frame. If the water is covered by ice, we will make arrangements to ensure winter bathing is still possible. Price: NOK 295,– including gluten-free and vegan soup with bread. On 14–15 March 2026, one of the season’s major highlights returns to Holmenkollen — the traditional Nordic weekend. With cross-country skiing, ski jumping and Nordic combined on the programme, athletes and spectators will come together for two days filled with drama, history, and a true public celebration. Saturday promises to be something truly special, as Holmenkollen hosts a double 50-kilometre race for the very first time. The men will start at 10:00, followed by the women at 10:30. This means the athletes will be out on the course at the same time — a new format that brings more action and excitement to both the stadium and the trails. Here, the audience will get to experience the classic Kollen atmosphere in a fresh, modern way. Sunday sees the return of the iconic Holmenkollen Sunday, with ski jumping and Nordic combined on the schedule all day long. Spectators can look forward to a full day of spectacular jumps from the large hill, combined with raw endurance and tactical battles on the cross-country track. It’s the day many have missed — and now it’s finally back. This weekend will be a celebration of skiing at its very best, where proud traditions meet exciting new concepts, and the crowd gets to experience everything Holmenkollen stands for: community, passion, and unforgettable moments.
