Het gebied Salten strekt zich uit van Helgeland in het zuiden tot Ofoten in het noorden. Bodø, gelegen in het midden van Salten, is de grootste stad van het gebied. Plan een citytrip naar Bodø voordat je de rest van de kustparels in Salten gaat verkennen. Veel kustplaatsen zijn gemakkelijk bereikbaar vanuit het stadscentrum.

Je kunt de regio per auto verkennen, maar snelboten (waarvan er veel in Bodø vertrekken) zijn een handige manier om de vele kustplaatsen te ontdekken.

Eén van de absolute hoogtepunten is Saltfjellet, waar je de poolcirkel kunt oversteken, en de eilanden en kustdorpjes Steigen en Hammarøy, met tal van unieke accommodaties.

De hoofdstad van Salten is Bodø: de minimetropool van Noord-Noorwegen die in 2024 werd uitgeroepen tot culturele hoofdstad van Europa.

De stad is zowel de stedelijke hub van Salten als een natuurlijk startpunt om de rest van de regio te verkennen.

Geniet volledig van hoogtepunten zoals Kulturkvartalet Stormen, een cultureel centrum met een bibliotheek en een concertzaal, en proef heerlijke lekkernijen bij Craig Alibone.

Ook de idyllische handelspost Kjerringøy en de sterkste draaikolk ter wereld Saltstraumen zijn gemakkelijk te bereiken en zijn perfecte dagtochten vanuit Bodø.

Helemaal in het noorden van Salten, bij Tranøy, kun je jezelf verwennen met een overnachting in een vuurtoren.

Bij de vuurtoren van Tranøy heb je ongestoord uitzicht op het Vestfjord en de ruige bergen op de Lofoten. Het geluid van de golven is een rustgevend achtergrondgeluid terwijl je uitrust.

Ongeveer 20 minuten ten zuidoosten ligt Hamarøy, waar Knut Hamsun vele jaren heeft gewoond. Hij ontving in 1920 de Nobelprijs voor literatuur. Veel van zijn romans, waaronder Pan, Zwervers en Hoe het groeide, zijn geïnspireerd door de omliggende landschappen.

Het Hamsun-centrum biedt fascinerend inzicht in het leven van de auteur en een prachtig uitzicht over het gebied dat bekendstaat als 'het rijk van Hamsun'.

Ten noorden van Bodø vind je ook Steigen, een gebied met spectaculaire bergtoppen en idyllische zandstranden zoals Bøsanden en Brennviksanden.

Je bent ook verzekerd van een fijne pauze van de digitale drukte van alledag in de nationale parken van Salten.

Rago in Sørfold (afgebeeld) biedt ruige wildernis, terwijl Láhko en Junkerdal toplocaties zijn als je zin hebt in een vistocht op een meer of rivier. Sjunkhatten biedt verschillende wandelroutes en barbecueplekken, en is ideaal voor gezinnen met kinderen.

Als je de regio per auto verkent, bezoek dan ook één van de mooiste openbare toiletten ter wereld. Geen grap!

Veel mensen komen per auto naar Salten en het laatste stuk van de toeristische route Kystriksveien loopt door de regio. Ureddplassen in Gildeskål is een geweldige tussenstop als de nood toeslaat, maar ook als je wat foto's wilt maken van het prachtige uitzicht.

Als je vanuit het zuiden over de E6 via Saltfjellet richting Fauske of het skiparadijs Sulitjelma rijdt, is het oversteken van de poolcirkel absoluut een hoogtepunt. Je kunt misschien zelfs het noorderlicht bewonderen!

Een andere tip is om te stoppen bij het Nationale Parkcentrum Nordland in Saltdal. Dit is ook het startpunt voor een bezoek aan het unieke natuurreservaat Junkerdalsura.

Test je visgeluk in de rivier de Saltdalselva. Als je meer houdt van riviervissen, moet je zeker even stoppen bij de Beiarelva.Deze rivier ligt in Beiarn, ten westen van Saltdal, en is één van de beste zalmrivieren van Noorwegen. Je hebt wel een vergunning nodig.

Als je toch liever voor zeevissen kiest, heb je daar de perfecte gelegenheid voor langs de kust van Salten. Als je bezoek in de winter valt, sla je misschien wel een skrei (trekkende kabeljauw) aan de haak!
