Noorse toeristische route Gamle Strynefjellsvegen

Reis terug in de tijd met een tocht door de bergen

De Noorse toeristische route Strynefjellsvegen, één van de 18 Noorse toeristische routes, is de historische weg over de bergpas Strynefjellet tussen Lom en Stryn.

Beleef een stukje Noorse geschiedenis op de oude weg uit 1894. Met de hand gebouwde stenen muren en lange rijen grenspalen geven de Noorse toeristische route Gamle Strynefjellsvegen vorm, die volledig door handmatig werk tot stand is gekomen.

Volg de oude weg

Deze weg is op zichzelf al een museum, waar je kunt bewonderen hoe een bijzonder ontwerp al eeuwenlang weerstand biedt aan de elementen. En dan hebben we het nog niet eens gehad over het prachtige berglandschap waar je door rijdt. De Noorse toeristische route Strynefjellsvegen is 27 kilometer lang en loopt tussen Grotli en Videsæter.

Het was de oude hoofdweg tussen Lom in Ottadalen en Stryn, die het binnenland in het oosten verbond met Nordfjord in het westen.

Om de oude weg te bereiken, rijd je ongeveer zes uur vanuit Oslo, Bergen of Trondheim. Vanuit Ålesund ben je er in ongeveer drie uur.

Als je deze toeristische route vanuit het oosten start, is het gezellige bergdorpje Lom een ideale plek om te overnachten en te verkennen voordat je verder gaat.

Er is van alles te doen: bezoek de staafkerk, neem een zipline over de waterval Prestfossen en...

De bakkerij in Lom is een onmisbare stop op een roadtrip, maar reken op een flinke rij!

Rijd daarna naar het beginpunt van de route bij Grotli, waar je kunt overnachten of genieten van een maaltijd in Grotli Høyfjellshotell. In de omgeving vind je ook een informatiebord (afgebeeld) met meer informatie over de oude weg.

Volg de charmante, smalle weg ongeveer vier kilometer totdat je het meer Heillstuguvatnet bereikt. Dit is een prachtig gebied voor fotografie en een uitstekend vertrekpunt voor verschillende wandelingen of een vistocht.

In de buurt vind je ook een vliegtuigwrak dat tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog is neergehaald, samen met een herdenkingsmonument dat je kunt bezoeken.

De weg staat bekend om zijn met de hand gebouwde muren en rijen grensstenen. De opkomst van het toerisme langs de westelijke fjorden was de aanleiding voor de aanleg van de weg aan het einde van de 19e eeuw. In 2009 werd de weg benoemd tot beschermd monument vanwege zijn historische betekenis.

Rijd zeven kilometer verder langs beken, stroompjes en indrukwekkende bergen richting het meer Vassvendtjønnin, het hoogste punt van de route op 1139 meter boven zeeniveau.

De volgende dertien kilometer voeren je langs het meer Langvatnet en de vallei Videdalen in. Bewonder het prachtige landschap terwijl je begint af te dalen via de bergpas.

Several well-known destinations are within a short drive, including Olden, Loen, Hoven and Stryn. The turquoise Oldedalsvatnet is only a 5-minute drive away. At Yrineste, canoes and kayaks can be rented during the main season. Accommodation is available from May to the end of September in cabins and apartments. Booking is available via the website or Booking.com. The units are located in cabins and two restored 17th and 18th century houses, part of the Trollbu farm cluster. In total, the cluster includes three houses: two cabins and one building with two apartments (first and second floor). The total capacity is 22 beds. All units are equipped with kitchen or kitchenette, living room, sofa, TV, seating area, and WC/shower. Extra beds are available on request. One cabin (Voljastova no. 2) includes a wood-burning stove. All bathrooms were renovated in winter 2023. The area is peaceful, surrounded by high mountains and green valley sides. The restaurant, located in a rebuilt barn, accommodates up to 90 guests for events, meetings and gatherings. It is built on the foundation of the original barn from 1895 and was completed in 2005. During the main season, homemade farm food, coffee, cake, ice cream, drinks and homemade beer are served. Al snel kom je de waterval Videfossen tegen. Zie hoe het water over de rotswand naar beneden stort.

Boven op de rotswand bevindt zich een uitkijkpunt waar je het gevoel hebt pal boven het water te staan. Stop om foto's te nemen of om gewoon te genieten van het uitzicht en de kracht van de natuur. Wil je langer in de omgeving blijven, boek dan een nacht of twee in het Videseter Hotel aan de andere kant van de weg.

Rijd vervolgens ongeveer twee kilometer over kronkelende bergwegen naar een volgende waterval. De indrukwekkende waterval Øvstefossen stort neer in de Hjelledalen-vallei en een voetpad van 200 meter met stalen leuningen brengt je veilig dicht bij het schuimende water.

Officieel heb je de toeristische route nu afgerond, maar de daadwerkelijke oude weg loopt nog elf kilometer verder naar het dorpje Hjelle.

Onderweg passeer je de Jøl-brug uit 1883. De oude stenen brug is niet meer in gebruik, maar je kunt er wel stoppen voor foto's en dit stukje geschiedenis van dichtbij bekijken.

Eén van de eerste dingen die je in Hjelle ziet, is het Hjelle Hotel en Gamlebutikken, een historische winkel en café. Loop hier binnen voor een heerlijke middagthee of bekijk de schappen vol Engels porselein. Dit is ook het vertrekpunt als je de route in omgekeerde richting wilt rijden. Hier vind je bovendien informatie over de route.

Hjelle is een idyllisch dorpje aan het Strynsvatnet-meer. Het voelt alsof je in een levende ansichtkaart stapt en het is een heerlijke plek om een paar dagen door te brengen en de Noorse natuur te verkennen.

Vanuit Hjelle rijd je in ongeveer 26 kilometer naar Stryn. Dit is de perfecte plek als je op zoek bent naar echt avontuur. Ski het hele jaar door in de omliggende bergen, maak een begeleide gletsjertrektocht en geniet van een verfrissende duik in het kristalheldere Lovatnet (afgebeeld).

In het nabijgelegen Loen kun je met de Loen Skilift naar de top van de berg Hoven of via de meer avontuurlijke route met een via ferrata. Trakteer jezelf op een heerlijke maaltijd met lokale ingrediënten bij Hoven Restaurant, dat aan de top van de berg ligt.

Goed om te weten voordat je vertrekt

De weg wordt op bepaalde stukken erg smal en er zijn meerdere scherpe bochten, dus let op tegemoetkomend verkeer. Voertuigen die langer zijn dan acht meter met een asbelasting van meer dan acht ton mogen deze weg niet gebruiken.

Rijd langzaam op de oude onverharde weg en gebruik de uitwijkplaatsen om ruimte te maken voor tegemoetkomend verkeer.

De weg is gesloten tijdens de wintermaanden, van ongeveer september/oktober tot mei/juni, en kan ook op andere momenten van het jaar gesloten zijn, bijvoorbeeld vanwege slecht weer.

Informatie voor fietsers: Het beste startpunt is Grotli en het is een vrij korte route over asfalt- en grindwegen.
