Deze tocht van 108 kilometer voert je van het historische bergdorp Lom, over de hoogste bergpas van Noord-Europa, naar beneden tot aan de smaragdgroene wateren van de Lusterfjord. Je eindigt in het dorpje Gaupne in Luster, het binnenste deel van het beroemde Sognefjord.

Reken op zo'n 2 uur en 15 minuten reistijd met de auto, maar trek gerust een paar dagen uit om de gletsjers, fjorden en bergcultuur onderweg echt in je op te nemen.

Kom je vanuit Oslo, dan rij je in ongeveer 5 uur naar Lom. Je kunt ook vanuit Bergen naar het startpunt in Luster rijden, wat doorgaans zo'n 4,5 uur duurt.

Houd er rekening mee dat de bergpas tussen Rustasætre en Turtagrø in de winter gesloten is en meestal pas tussen half april en begin mei weer opengaat. Ook na de opening kan de weg 's nachts of bij slecht weer dichtgaan. Zelfs in de zomer kun je sneeuw en ijs tegenkomen.

Juvasshytta in Jotunheimen

Volg eerst de weg 25 minuten naar het zuidwesten. Dan bereik je Elveseter Hotell, een voormalige familieboerderij die is omgetoverd tot een kunstzinnige berglodge. Stop hier even om de 34 meter hoge Saga-zuil te bewonderen, die historische taferelen uit de lange en rijke geschiedenis van Noorwegen uitbeeldt.

Vlak voordat je bij Elveseter aankomt, neem je de steile zijweg omhoog naar Juvasshytta. Dit is het vertrekpunt voor de beklimming van Galdhøpiggen (2469 meter), de hoogste bergtop van Noord-Europa!

Je kunt overnachten in de berglodges Juvasshytta, Raubergstulen of Spiterstulen om je helemaal onder te dompelen in deze hooggelegen omgeving en om mee te gaan op een begeleide hike.

Tijd om weer verder te gaan over de toeristische route!

Vanaf Elveseter wacht het rustpunt Liasanden iets verderop langs de weg op je, als je even wilt luisteren naar de wind die ruist door de dennenbomen.

De torenhoge toppen zoals de Store Skagastølstind zijn een favoriet onder professionele klimmers, maar je kunt het dramatische landschap gewoon bewonderen vanaf het veilige uitzichtpunt Vegaskjelet, wat een stukje verderop langs de route ligt.

Rijd nog 25 minuten door over de bergweg en je bereikt het hoogste punt bij Sognefjellshytta. Deze moderne hut heeft een opvallend ontwerp van hout en glas, waar je in de zomermaanden langlaufers kunt zien trainen op de gletsjersneeuw.

Ben je op zoek naar een mooie foto? Dan vind je het uitzichtpunt Mefjellet slechts drie minuten verderop langs de route! Hier staat het iconische stenen kunstwerk, dat dienstdoet als een enorme, natuurlijke lijst rond het landschap.

Maak een korte tussenstop bij Oscarshaug om gebruik te maken van het bijzondere toilet, ontworpen door Snøhetta. Dit is hetzelfde bureau dat het Noorse Operahuis ontwierp. Een paar minuten verderop biedt Nedre Oscarshaug één van de mooiste uitzichtpunten van Jotunheimen.

En dan begint je afdaling richting berghut Turtagrø. Dit gebied is de historische bakermat van het alpinisme in Noorwegen en het belangrijkste toegangspunt tot het ruige Hurrungane-gebergte. Een geweldige plek om te slapen of om stevige bergmaaltijden te bestellen!

Rijd 20 minuten verder en je bereikt Skjolden op het binnenste punt van het Sognefjord. Hier kun je meedoen met unieke activiteiten zoals alpacawandelingen, snelle RIB-tochten en rustige wandelingen door de weelderige Mørkridsdalen-vallei.

Volg het Lustrafjord nog 15 minuten en je kunt bijtanken met heerlijke gebakken lekkernijen bij bakkerij Lustrabui. Of je kunt genieten van een luxe verblijf in één van de mooie accommodaties in deze omgeving, zoals het unieke en prachtige boetiekhotel Bestebakken.

Na nog eens 20 minuten kom je aan in Gaupne, het eindpunt van de Noorse toeristische route Sognefjellet. Maak vanaf hier een uitstapje naar de Jostedalen-vallei in om de gletsjer Nigardsbreen te bewonderen of kies voor meer avontuur met raften en ziplinen bij Icetroll (je kunt ze zelfs combineren!). En onthoud: je reis hoeft hier niet te eindigen…

    The starting point is the car park in Engjadalen. The first stretch follows a track on the west side of the river along the valley. After a short walk you come to a marked path which leads to the Tourist Association (DNT) cabin at Navarsete. The path continues along the west side of the river until it crosses the river just before Heggdalen, an nice summer farm up the green and fertile Engjadalen valley. From Heggdalen the climb is fairly steep up to Heggdalsvatnet lake where the path occasionally goes right to the edge of the river cutting. It is as well to warn you to avoid this stretch, especially when it's raining or there is slippery ice. You can leave the path and find a way a few metres further from the cliff

Rijd 20 minuten verder naar het zuidwesten en je bereikt het idyllische dorpje Solvorn. Vanaf hier neem je de kleine veerboot naar de Urnes-staafkerk, de oudste ter wereld, of wandel je omhoog naar Molden voor wat velen het mooiste fjorduitzicht van Sogn noemen.

Een rit van 30 minuten naar het westen vanaf Gaupne brengt je naar het regionale centrum Sogndal. Deze bruisende plaats is ideaal om een lokale brouwerij of een modern café te vinden en na te genieten van je tocht over Sognefjellet.

Goed om te weten voordat je vertrekt

Wintersluiting en opening in het voorjaar

Het hooggebergtegedeelte tussen Rustasætre/Vegaskjelet en Turtagrø sluit in november voor de winter en gaat doorgaans rond half april en begin mei weer open. Door slecht weer kan de weg 's nachts of plotseling afgesloten worden, dus check altijd Statens Vegvesen voor actuele verkeersinformatie voordat je vertrekt.

Tips voor fietsers

Sognefjellet maakt deel uit van Nationale Fietsroute 6 en is adembenemend, maar kan ook uitdagend zijn. Start je in het westen vanuit Skjolden/Fortun, dan klim je 850 hoogtemeters over slechts 10 kilometer, met steile stukken tot wel 16% richting Turtagrø. Vanuit Lom is de klim wat milder, maar word je beloond met een zeer steile, technische afdaling naar Fortun.

Voorzieningen voor campers

De architectonische toiletvoorzieningen langs de route zijn niet geschikt voor afval van campers en caravans. Het legen van chemische toiletten bij deze rustplaatsen is verboden. Campergebruikers moeten daarom gebruikmaken van de daarvoor bestemde lozingsstations in Lom, Vågåmo of Gaupne.
