Lente in Noorwegen:
het droomseizoen voor afdalingen

’In de lente worden de Noorse skigebieden sexy,’ zegt Fredrik Luytkis. Geniet van winterse activiteiten met een zomers kantje en laat openluchtconcerten en pop-upfestivals je in een feestelijke stemming brengen. Het is niet verwonderlijk dat veel skiërs dit het moment vinden waarop het echte plezier start.

’Jii-ha!’

Een oerkreet uit de Alpen, die zoveel betekent als ’Ik kom de helling naar beneden met een glimlach op mijn gezicht,’ drukt het echte lentegevoel uit dat je in deze tijd vaak hoort, ziet en voelt.

’Lente op de piste is een heerlijke mix van het beste van de Noorse winter en zomer,’ zegt Thomas T. Kleiven, die al jarenlang als de belangrijkste skireporter van Noorwegen wordt beschouwd.

Hij geeft je vier redenen waarom je nu gelijk richting de pistes moet trekken:

Eerst en vooral worden kleren vaker uitgetrokken en zijn de mensen wat losser, wat zorgt voor een feestelijk stemming. ’Zonnige dagen maken mensen echt heel gelukkig, ook in de bergen,’ legt hij uit.

Bovendien betekenen warmere temperaturen dat je je lichter kunt aankleden dan in de winter. Dit maakt het ook aangenamer voor kinderen.

Minder mensen op de pistes en kortere wachtrijen dragen ook bij aan de ontspannen sfeer.

Ten slotte zorgt het weer ervoor dat de lente het perfecte moment is voor zowel kinderen als volwassenen om te leren skiën of hun vaardigen aan te scherpen.

Stijlvolle pistes

’Het plotse, heerlijke lentegevoel vind je sneller in de bergen dan in de grote steden,’ zegt Fredrik Luytkis, een voormalige professionele freerider die nu meestal op grote hoogte gaat skiën met zijn tienerzoon Storm.

’Daardoor zie je een stedelijk, modebewust publiek naar hier komen, met hun trendy zonnebrillen, kleurrijke hoofdbanden en andere attributen in de stijl van de jaren 1960 en ’70, toen alpineskiën nog iets voor de ’jetset’ was,’ zegt Fredrik.

’Deze mensen te kunnen observeren is de reis op zich al waard. In de lente worden de Noorse skigebieden sexy.’

Festivalsfeer

Fredrik combineert graag alpineskiën met openluchtconcerten en pop-upfestivals die de resorts vaak in het weekend organiseren: ’Denk aan het Glastonbury-festival met topmodel Kate Moss op het podium, of aan het feesteiland Ibiza.’

De Noorse snowboarder Silje Norendal is tweevoudig Olympisch en viervoudig X-Gameskampioen en bracht de voorbije jaren steeds de maanden maart en april door in de skiresorts in Hemsedal en Trysil.

’Sommige mensen houden zoveel van deze fijne sfeer dat ze naar de bergen komen zonder ski’s, gewoon om in de stemming te komen en van het fantastische weer te genieten,’ zegt Silje.

Ga snel – of onthaast

’In het Noors noemen we het ‘kos’, wat zoveel betekent als ’een leuke tijd hebben samen’. Voor iemand als ik, die gewoonlijk bezig is met snowboardtraining en wedstrijden, is Pasen een zeldzame gelegenheid om met goede vrienden rond een kampvuur te kunnen zitten.’

Verschillende skigebieden voorzien pannen om boven het vuur je eigen vlees te bakken. Dit is een leuk alternatief voor wie niet naar één van de vele geweldige restaurants of cafés gaat.

Verlengd lenteseizoen

’Dankzij geweldige wintersportbestemmingen als de Lofoten en Narvik, waar de sneeuwomstandigheden de hele lente lang perfect blijven, duurt mijn snowboardseizoen heel erg lang, zeker tot eind mei!’ zegt Silje.

Op de berg Narvikfjellet kun je tot eind juni op voldoende sneeuw rekenen om lekker naar beneden te suizen. Afhankelijk van de sneeuwomstandigheden kun je in de voornaamste skigebieden in het zuiden normaal gezien skiën tot eind april.

Pistes in de buurt

’Maar het plezier is steeds dichterbij dan je denkt. Mijn vrienden en ik nemen soms spontaan de metro naar Oslo Skimore, dat slechts een paar minuten buiten het stadscentrum ligt. Daar kunnen we een dagje ontspannen snowboarden,’ zegt Silje, die in Oslo woont.

De gemakkelijke toegang tot de pistes in Oslo Skimore doen de hele hoofdstad op een skiresort lijken, met toprestaurants als extraatje.

Silje wijst er ook op dat je in sommige regio’s in Noorwegen plots twee weken poedersneeuw kunt hebben, wanneer je natte sneeuw verwacht.

’De lente in de Noorse bergen zit vol feestelijke verrassingen.’
