Op jacht naar de perfecte stroming

Volgens de World Waterfall Database bevinden 10 van de 30 hoogste watervallen ter wereld zich in Noorwegen. Veel van die watervallen vormen de verbindende schakel tussen de bergen en de fjorden. Er zijn echter ook watervallen in rivieren. Alle watervallen hebben in elk geval gemeen dat ze zorgen voor afwisseling in het Noorse landschap.

Wie op zoek is naar de mooiste watervallen, kan het beste naar het zuidwesten van Noorwegen zijn. Bovendien zijn de watervallen op hun mooist in mei en juni, wanneer ijs en sneeuw in de bergen smelten en het waterpeil op zijn hoogst is.

De hoogste niet-gereguleerde en onafgebroken waterval in Noorwegen is Vettisfossen, waar het water een vrije val van 275 meter maakt. De waterval werd in 2014 door lezers van de Noorse krant Dagbladet bovendien uitgeroepen tot de mooiste waterval van Noorwegen.

Ook Langfoss biedt een adembenemend uitzicht: daar valt het water 600 meter langs de bergen in de Åkrafjord. De hoogste watervallen in Noorwegen zijn wel meer dan 800 meter hoog.

Andere attracties zijn Vøringsfossen, de populairste attractie uit 2006, en De Zeven Zusters, midden in de Geirangerfjord. Met een beetje fantasie zie je er het haar van zeven vrouwen ... Een van de hoogtepunten langs de Flåm-spoorbaan is de machtige Kjosfossen, waar actrices in de zomer verkleed als de mythologische Huldra voor de waterval dansen en zingen.

Watervallen zijn voor de Noren echter meer dan fotogenieke omgevingen. Veel watervallen in het land worden, soms tegen de wil van de burgers, gebruikt om energie op te wekken. Veel lokale bedrijven zijn dan ook van het water afhankelijk.

Fjord-Noorwegen is de ideale bestemming voor liefhebbers van watervallen. Je vindt er bovendien kilometers wildwater waar je heerlijk kunt kajakken! Een van de mooiste rivieren is de Sogndalselva.
