Zowel vissers als fijnproevers moeten ooit eens in de winter op reis naar Noord-Noorwegen. De visserij op de Lofoten staat bekend als de grootste kabeljauwvangst ter wereld.
De Arctische kabeljauw is één van de beste en duurzaamste producten van Noorwegen. Tussen januari en april migreert deze vis van de Barentszzee naar de Noorse kust om kuit te schieten. Je vindt ze van Haugesund in het zuiden tot Finnmark in het noorden.
Historisch gezien is ongeveer de helft van de kabeljauwen teruggekeerd naar de wateren rondom de Lofoten waar hun ouders minstens drie à vier jaar eerder kuitschoten. Hierdoor is de visvangst op de Lofoten, de ’lofotfiske’, de grootste seizoensvangst voor kabeljauw ter wereld. In de afgelopen jaren zijn veel Arctische kabeljauwen nog noordelijker gemigreerd, naar plekken als de Vesterålen en Senja.
De winter is normaal gezien ook in de rest van Noord-Noorwegen het hoogseizoen om te gaan vissen. Ga mee met een begeleide visserstocht, huur je eigen boot of ga aan wal vissen met de machtige, witte bergen rondom je heen.
In de winter kun je ook gaan skiën, op begeleide skitour vertrekken en enkele van de vele musea en charmante vissersdorpjes bezoeken. Misschien krijg je zelfs het noorderlicht te zien!
Je kunt ook van de versgevangen kabeljauw genieten bij de talloze uitstekende visrestaurants in het noorden. Maar maak je geen zorgen als je niet tot in dit deel van het land geraakt. Chefs in grote steden als Oslo, Trondheim, Bergen, Stavanger en Ålesund maken ook kabeljauw klaar, vaak op creatieve en subtiele wijze.
De rest van het jaar kun je talloze varianten van stokvis (gedroogde kabeljauw) proeven. Een echte must wanneer je naar het noorden komt.
Doe mee met de 'lofotfiske'
Wie van vissen houdt, moet Noord-Noorwegen bezoeken tussen januari en april. In deze tijd van het jaar krijg je bijna gegarandeerd een heerlijk diner voorgeschoteld.
