Wat zijn fjorden en hoe zijn ze ontstaan?
Een fjord is een inham in de zee, meestal lang en smal, omgeven door hoge kliffen of steile bergen. De fjorden hebben vaak U‑vormige valleien en kunnen zeer diep zijn. Bij de monding, waar ze in zee uitkomen, zijn ze vaak ondiep. Een fjord kan talloze zijarmen of -takken hebben. Een aantal van de beroemdste fjorden van Noorwegen zijn in feite zijtakken van grotere fjorden!
De fjorden zijn ontstaan door enorme gletsjers die zich uitstrekten tot onder de zeespiegel. In zo’n 2,5 miljoen jaar hebben opeenvolgende ijstijden zijn U‑vormige valleien in het landschap uitgesleten. Of, anders gezegd: gletsjers hebben de fjorden gevormd.
Wist je dat: Het woord fjord komt van het Oudnoorse fjorðr, dat ‘gaan’, ‘passeren’ of ‘oversteken’ betekent.
Hoe diep zijn de fjorden?
Fjorden kunnen behoorlijk diep zijn, maar dat verschilt per fjord. Het diepste fjord van Noorwegen is het Sognefjord in Fjord‑Noorwegen, met een diepte van 1.303 meter.
Hoe lang zijn de fjorden?
Ook de lengte van fjorden varieert. Het Sognefjord is niet alleen het diepste fjord van Noorwegen, maar ook het langste. Het strekt zich 205 km uit van Solund in het westen tot Skjolden aan de voet van de nationale parken Jotunheimen, Jostedalsbreen en Breheimen.
Het Hardangerfjord in Hardanger is met 180 km het op één na langste fjord van Noorwegen.

Welke fjorden kun je bezoeken
Met meer dan 1.000 fjorden behoort de Noorse kust tot de gebieden met de meeste fjorden ter wereld.
In Noord‑Noorwegen vind je de meeste fjorden. Behalve het bekende Trollfjord en Lyngenfjord in Noord‑Noorwegen liggen veel van de beroemdste fjorden in West‑Noorwegen. Hier kun je onder andere het Geirangerfjord, het Nærøyfjord (een zijtak van het Aurlandsfjord), het Hardangerfjord, het Lysefjord, het Nordfjord en het Sognefjord ontdekken.
Je kunt je bezoek aan de fjorden ook prima combineren met een stedentrip. Een voorbeeld hiervan is de hoofdstad van Noorwegen, waar je het Oslofjord kunt verkennen.

Wat maakt Noorse fjorden uniek?
Er zijn maar weinig plekken ter wereld met fjorden en Noorwegen staat bekend als hét land met de meest iconische en indrukwekkende fjorden!
Sterker nog: zowel het Geirangerfjord als het Nærøyfjord in Fjord-Noorwegen staan op de UNESCO‑werelderfgoedlijst. De fjorden zijn de enige UNESCO‑locaties in Noorwegen die uitsluitend vanwege hun natuurwaarde op de werelderfgoedlijst staan. Beide fjorden gelden als perfecte voorbeelden van het unieke fjordlandschap en UNESCO omschrijft ze als “buitengewone natuurlijke schoonheid”.
De fjorden werden in 2005 door UNESCO op de werelderfgoedlijst geplaatst.
Wat is het beste moment om de fjorden te bezoeken?
De meeste fjorden zijn het hele jaar door toegankelijk, ook in de winter! Dankzij de warme Golfstroom en de door het corioliseffect veroorzaakte luchtstromen, hebben de Noorse fjorden een relatief mild klimaat en blijven ze vrijwel ijsvrij.

Zomer, juni-augustus: Hoogseizoen voor toeristen. Vaak het beste weer. Alle toeristische voorzieningen zijn open, maar je moet op tijd boeken.
Herfst, september-oktober: Prachtige herfstkleuren. Minder toeristen. Nog steeds mogelijk om van fjordcruises te genieten, maar er zijn mogelijk minder vertrektijden.
Winter, november-maart: Indrukwekkend, besneeuwd landschap en een rustige sfeer. Unieke winterse fjordcruises. Houd er rekening mee dat sommige activiteiten en accommodaties mogelijk gesloten zijn. Controleer dat van tevoren.
Kan ik per trein, bus of boot naar de fjorden reizen?
Veel Noorse fjorden kun je veilig en eenvoudig bereiken met het openbaar vervoer. Lokale bussen en veerboten (of een combinatie daarvan) zijn vaak uitstekende vervoersopties. Je kunt ook met de trein naar uitstekende vertrekpunten reizen. Vind routesuggesties en dienstregelingen met reisplanner Entur.
Kan ik met de auto naar de fjorden rijden?
Je kunt ook met de auto naar de fjorden rijden en ze op eigen houtje verkennen. Houd er rekening mee dat regionale wegen in afgelegen gebieden erg bochtig en smal kunnen zijn, dus rijd voorzichtig, vooral als je met een camper of caravan onderweg bent. Plan vooruit en onderschat de afstanden en reistijden in Noorwegen niet.
Houd er rekening mee dat sommige wegen, vooral bergpassen, in de winter door slecht weer afgesloten kunnen zijn. Controleer je route daarom altijd van tevoren.
Zo bereik je de fjorden vanuit Oslo, Bergen en andere steden
Steden als Oslo, Bergen, Ålesund en Stavanger zijn ideale vertrekpunten voor de fjorden.
Vanuit Oslo of Bergen kun je de Bergen-spoorlijn nemen naar Myrdal, en vervolgens verder reizen met de beroemde Flåm-spoorlijn van Myrdal naar Flåm. Een populaire dagcruise is Gudvangen-Flåm in het Nærøyfjord, waar je volledig elektrisch kunt reizen.
