    Hedalen Stave Church
    Hedalen

    Hedalen Stave Church

The Hedalen Stave Church may be the oldest of its kind in Valdres today. It comprises an unusual amount of catholic items and among these a reliquary. Only a few of these can still be found in Norway. The church dates back to around 1163, and coins from King Sverre's era 1177-1202 have been found under the floor. It is in use as a regular parish church. The west-facing portal features dragon and vine decorations from the late 1100s. These dragons symbolise the evil forces you leave behind before you enter the place of worship. The reliquary is the most treasured item in the church. It is made out of copper-gilded wood, and dates back to around 1250. The figures featured are Christ, St. Mary, St John, St. Jacob, St. Thomas, St. Olav and St. Peter. Norway has only a few such reliquaries left. Its original reliquary casket is still intact, and is the only one of its kind. The Hedal Madonna (sculpture of St. Mary), dating back to the mid-1200s, is one of the most stunning pieces of medieval ecclesiastical art in Norway. Originaly, the sacrament house was part of the triptych. Changes to this gothic triptych were probably made in 1699, and it was painted in 1769. Its crucifix dates back to around 1260-1280. The Romansque font is made out of soapstone, and has a cover dating back to 1250. In the sacristy, a bearskin is hanging on the wall. According to legend, there was no one left in Hedalen after the Black Death. A hunter found the church in the woods and shot a bear in front of the altar. But there were still people living in Hedalen, and maybe the bearskin was just the vicar's somewhat unusual rug in front of the altar. Admission (incl. guiding) Adults NOK 90,- Children 6-16 years NOK 50,- Family NOK 250,- Groups NOK 70,- per person (minimum 10 people) No student or senior discounts. Ryfoss

    Sygarden i Hålien

A Small Farm in Sustainable Development! Grab Local Food Directly from the Farm! Sygarden in Hålien is a small dairy farm in Ryfoss in Vang, with fifteen dairy cows of the Vestlandsk Fjordfe breed. The animals are kept outside all year round, grazing during the warm months and primarily grass-fed during winter. We place a strong emphasis on the cows' natural behavior and allow the calves to stay with the cows during the first months. In spring and autumn, the animals graze on biologically rich pastures on the farm, but in summer, the cows and milk production move to the mountains – first to the home summer farm at Bergseng, and then higher up in the mountains to the summer farm at Bygdin at 1100 masl. We walk to the mountain farms with the animals on foot – just like in the old days! At Sygarden, we’ve built a dairy where we process our milk into various dairy products. Our customers' favorite is Steik! (a type of grilled cheese), but we also offer butter, sour cream, salad cheese, fresh cheese, quark, ricotta, and yogurt. You can buy the products at our trust-based shops, for example, all year round at the farm in Høre or in summer at Hålistølen at Bygdin. The shops are mostly self-service and open 24/7. You can also get in touch to arrange a guided visit to our daily life. What happens during your visit depends on the time of year, but most likely you’ll meet cozy cows, see mountains and taste cheese. Deep discussions about biodiversity and local food are also very likely.
    Mjølkevegen via Slettefjellet
    Beitostølen

Mjølkevegen: Beitostølen - Slettefjell - Vaset (70 km)

Beitostølen - Vaset (approx. 70 km; 1760 m elevation gain) This is the hardest, but also most spectacular, part of the Mjølkevegen cycling tour, containing two long and tough climbs. At Beitostølen, sleep comfortably at Beito Resort Hotel or Riddergaarden, or 4 km along the route towards Slettefjellet at Grønolen Fjellgard. From Beitostølen town centre, turn right down towards Beito, and then follow the signposts towards Slettefjellvegen. There is a good climb up to the top of Slettefjellet at 1315 m.a.s.l, which is the highest point of the entire route. Shortly before Mugnestølen you will find a Mjølkevegen rest shelter. At the top of the clomb there is a picnic area where you get an amazingly beautiful view over large parts of Jotunheimen. The road now descends steeply towards Vang - another breathtaking view! Drive carefully down here and make a few stops to take in the view! At the barrier you find Slettefjellkiosken where you can buy refreshments and charge your e-bike against a fee. Turn left and follow Høresvegen past Høre Stave Church and continue downhill to Ryfoss where you find a gas station, grocery store and café. Turn left onto Ryfossvegen and after 200 m right onto the pathway under the E16. After the bridge over the Begna River, turn left onto Kvednavegen, then, after 550 m, right onto Nordabergsvegen and after 1 km left onto Strøsvegen. Now you face another tough climb of approx. 10 km length and 655 m elevation gain unto the next mountain plateau and Syndinstøga. From Syndinstøga, Mjølkevegen continues to Vaset in a friendly and open, undulating mountain terrain. Make sure not to miss the right fork at the southern end of Lake Søre Syndin. You are now entering a 2 km trail section which can have wet parts and where it might be necessary to push the bike in some places. From Nørre Trollhovd, the route continues on a firm gravel road to Murkelie and all the way to Vaset, with lake Vasetvatnet on your left-hand side. If you like to stay at Vaset for the night, Vasetstølen offers accommodation in cosy cabins close to Lake Vasetvatnet. Tips: To avoid two heavy climbs in one day, you can break up the tour and stay for an overnight in a cabin at Rogn Camping in the valley. To get there, after having finished the Slettefjellet mountain pass, from the Slettefjellet/Dalsbru intersection follow the signs to Åsvang and descend along Tørpegardsvegen to Rogn Camping (order a breakfast package to be placed in your fridge). On the nest day you need to cycle for approx. 4 km along the E16 - take great care! - until Kvismo, where you tun right onto Nordabergsvegen and follow it until you reach Mjølkevegen again at the exit onto Strøsvegen (right turn). Have a great cycling tour! _______________ Transportation back to Beitostølen For regional buses from Fagernes to Beitostølen, see www.innlandstrafikk.no, route 137 (no reservation possible) For expresses bus from Fagernes to Beitostølen, see www.nor-way.no (people and bicycles should be booked in advance) To get to Fagernes, cycle on Panoramavegen to Ulnes and turn right onto Lovegen. Follow Lovegen along the southern bank of Lake Strandefjorden to Leira (approx. 1 km is on road 51) and cycle on the pedestrian and cycling path along the Lake to Fagernes. From Fagernes, it is also possible to cycle (mostly) on back roads back to Baeitostølen. Order the GPX-track for this route by email to [email protected]. Bicycle rental For a rental bike, book your bike at Fjellkjeden.

    Beitostølen

Mjølkevegen: Lemonsjø - Beitostølen via Bygdin, Tyin and Slettefjellet (ca. 200 km)

This version focuses on the experiences in the northern ranges of the Mjølkevegen cycling route and allows you to travel in and out of the route by bus from Oslo during the summer season. You can take the bus all the way to the starting point, Lemonsjø Fjellstue (middle og June to middle of August). Information on bus routes and timetables can be found below. Lemonsjø - Skåbu / Ruten (59 km; 970 m elevation gain) After a good night's sleep at Lemonsjø Fjellstue and a solid breakfast, you are ready to start cycling! Follow the driveway behind the lodge through the cabin area (turn left at the garbage containers!) and the old forest road towards Randsverk. Before you reach Randsverk Camping, turn left and follow the cycling signs through the forest until you reach the main road Heidalsvegen. Exit onto Heidalsvegen to the left and follow it for approx. 2km to the intersection with Murudalsvegen. Exit to the right onto Murudalsvegen and after 5 km, to the right again onto Nysetervegen (right after crossing over the river). Stay on Nysetervegen through the whole Murudalen valley until you reach the intersection with Jotunheimvegen. Exit to the left onto Jotunheimenvegen and follow the signage to Skåbu Fjellhotell or, alternatively, along Lake Olstappan to Ruten Fjellstue. The friendly hosts at our accommodations will welcome you upon your arrival. Enjoy the cosy atmosphere, explore the outdoor activities and endulge in the local food! Skåbu/Ruten - Haugseter - Bygdin (61 km; 1155 m elevation gain)  From Skåbu or Ruten, this leg will take you to Bygdin, along the idyllic Jotunheimvegen. We recommend a stop at Haugseter Fjellstue for a break, a nice meal or for an overnight. Haugseter is well known for its many nearby hiking and fishing possibilities. Keep following Jotunheimvegen and exit to the left onto the main road 51 which you follow for approx. 1 km downhill to Bygdin Høifieldshotel. Bygdin Høyfjellshotell has historical style accommodation with a prime location on the lakeshore. In the surroundings of Bygdin there are hiking trails and the popular Synshorn Via ferrata. Bygdin - M/B Bitihorn - Tyinholmen (boat tour + 3.5 km; 75 m elevation gain) From Bygdin, the historical boat M/B Bitihorn will take you across the lake to Eidsbugarden. For timetable prices and online booking: https://jvb.no/en/bitihorn/ (remember to book for yourself and your bicycle!). The boat ride to Eidsbugarden takes 1 hr 45 min. From Eidsbugarden, it's only a few kilometers to Tyinholmen Høyfjellstue. This is one of the traditional historic tourist lodges in Jotunheimen with continuous operation since 1892. Enjoy the breathtaking surroundings. We recommend to spend the afternoon with a hike to Utsikten or to explore the beautiful valley of Koldedalen on bicycle. Tyinholmen - Tyinkrysset / Filefjellstuene (20.5 km; 185 m elevation gain) From Tyinholmen, the route takes you along the shore of Lake Tyin. Reaching road 53, exit to the left in the direction of Tyinkrysset. After approx. 3 kilometers turn left and follow the signage via Updalsstølen until you reach Tyinkrysset. Choose this route if you are bound for Slettefjellet and Beitostølen on teh same day. However, if you are staying for the night at Filefjellstuene, ignore the signs to the left and cintue on road 53 until your reach the old E16. Exit to the right and after approx. 400 m, to the left a short climb to the hotel Filefjellstuene. On the next day, continue uphill for a short bit to Grovstølen and turn left downhill to Tyinkrysset. At the Filefjell Turist Office / Intersport at Tyinkrysset, you can recharge your e-bike battery. There are power outlets either inside the store or outside on the wall next to the garbage containers. Also, there are chargers available for Shimano, Bosch og Yamaha. Tyinkrysset - Slettefjellet - Beitostølen (54 km; 1500 m elevation gain) From Tyinkrysset, we recommend following the King’s Road instead of cycling the E16, but be prepared for some trail sections where you might have to push your bike. At the intersection with the E16, make sure you get onto Vennisvegen along the northern shoreline of Lake Vangsmjøsa. Continue on Vennisvegen and Lilagardsvegen (uphill climb) until you reach the Slettefjell toll booth/entrance to the Slettefjell mountain road. Here you find a small kiosk where you can buy refreshments and also charge your e-bike battery (against fee). Get ready for the toughest stretch and the steepest climb on the entire route. Follow Slettefjellvegen accross the Slettefjellet mountain with the highest point at 1315 m.a.s.l. On the way up, we recommend to make a stop and stretch your legs on a 15 minutes walk for a view to the Sputrefossen waterfall (wooden sign in the second right bend after the toll booth). Once you arrive at the top of the mountain pass, the spectacular view will hopefully cover for the strenuous uphill ride. From there it’s all downhill to Lake Fleinsendin (beware that Slettefjellvegen exits to the right!) and further towards Lykkja and Beito. From Beito though, there is another 3 km climb to your final destination Beitostølen. Turn left at the intersection at Beitostølen and you’ll see our recommended accommodation, the Beito Resort Hotel on your left. At Beitostølen you’ll also find a selection of shops, restaurants, pubs, activity providers and all types of accommodation. _____________________________________ Transport App/webpage for connections across different public transport providers: www.entur.no Bus between Beitostølen and Gjendesheim: www.nor-way.no (book ahead for both yourself and your bike) Bus between Gjendesheim and Lemonsjø: www.innlandstrafikk.no, route 204 (no prebooking available) M/B Bitihorn across Lake Bygdin: www.jvb.no/bitihorn (book ahead for both yourself and your bike on www.nor-way.no) This tour can be booked as a tour package with all meals, transport and baggage transport. Heggenes

Skaget 1685 masl, Langsua National Park

Skaget (1685 m.a.sl.) is the highest mountain peak in Langsua National Park. Directions Follow road 51 to Heggenes and exit towards Yddin (toll road). Continue past Yddin Fjellstue (mountain lodge) and follow the road that ends up by Storeskag. Park your car approx. 700m before the tourist cabin Storeskag, at a large parking area with information boards and a toilet. The standard of the road can vary early in the season due to snow melting. Summer route description The path to Skaget starts to the left just after the parking area. There are several paths crossing, but you keep on the main path until it splits underneath the east shoulder, Nasen. We recommend choosing the main route to the right up on the east shoulder (Nasen), turning westwards over the plateau towards the summit. Alternatively, you can keep following the path straight ahead underneath the summit area. There are two options: turning right steep uphill a gully approx. midway underneath the summit plateau or keeping straight still, traversing the whole mountainside beneath the summit and then following the cairns towards the summit from the west (partly scrambling). All routes can be combined to make a round trip, however on your way back down, the main route is the easiest to follow. We only recommend this hike in clear weather. Length: ca. 3.5 km one way Duration: ca. 1.5–2 hrs. up Elevation gain: ca. 540 meters Suitable for children: from 4-5 yrs. Birdwatching - Valdresflye

Valdresflye is an alpine high mountain plateau south east of Jotunheimen and north west of Langsua National Park in the municipalities Øystre Slidre and Vågå. A number of sought-after mountain species can be found here. Many of them can be spotted right from the car, by driving slowly over the plateau (make use of the long lay-bys on both sides of the road to not obstruct traffic). The highest section of the road is usually the most productive. This tactic works especially well early in the season when the ground is still snow covered and the birds gather on bare spots and rocks close to the road. Later in the season we recommend to bird on foot. Park close by the café Flye1389 at the highest point of the road and follow the marked (but not signposted) trail towards the top of Fisketjernnuten (1527 m.a.s.l.). Temminck's Stint should be fairly easy to locate by ear and is found around the larger boulders close to the road. Northern Wheatear and Meadow Pipit are numerous. Further up (from approx. half way up the hill) Shore Lark and Rock Ptarmigan can be encountered. From the summit, continue off track in a north-easterly direction to the steep hillside towards Heimdalen. On the snow fields below the top plateau, Snow Bunting usually can be found well into summer. Return along the same way or descend off-track in a southerly direction where the mountain side is less steep. On rock fields at the foot of the mountain, Lapland Longspur (Lapland Bunting) is possible. On the Fisketjerna lakes there are often ducks, sometimes Long-tailed duck among them. To identify them a telescope is needed. Common Ringed Plover and Purple Sandpiper are easiest to find by walking around the lakes on the western side of the road. During some years Long-tailed Skuas visit Valdresflye, and Rough-legged Buzzard can be seen hunting overhead. In the cliffs on the eastern side of Synshorn (south of the Valdresflye plateau), kestrels usually breed. Around Heimdalsmunnen (north of the Valdresflye plateau) try for Ring Ouzel, Northern Wheatear and Bluethroat in the willows and the hillside towards Brurskardknappen. On the opposite side of the road, towards Leirungsdalen, Golden Plovers breed. Birding on Valdresflye can easily be combined with Jotunheimvegen. Directions: By car from either south or north along road 51 onto the Valdresflye high mountain plateau. By bus from Fagernes/Beitostølen or Vågå/Lom from approx. medio June (www.jvb.no and www.innlandstrafikk.no). Best season: From early June (depending on the snow conditions) to approx. medio July, preferably early during the day.

    Slidredomen

Slidredomen is the old principal parish church in Valdres, dating back to the 1100s. In medieval times, this was where you would find the Dean, the most important local representative for the bishop in Stavanger. The church was mentioned in writing for the first time in a letter from the pope in 1264, and it was then referred to as "ecclesie Sancte Marie De Slidrum". It also features the inscription "Maria" in runic letters. The south-facing main entrance is equipped with medieval fittings in wrought iron and measuring stick. A cross has been engraved into the stone frame, and the door opening features a labyrinth. Traces of five consecration crosses can be found in the church, and the northern wall of the nave has a painted coat-of-arms from around 1330-1350. Today this is the muncipality coat of arms for Vestre-Slidre. On the eastern wall of the choir is an impressive lime painting from the 1400s. It shows the apostles, an illustration of the ascension and, at the very top, a blessing of coronation amid angles with musical instrument. The choir`s roof painting dates back to around 1250, and shows Christ surrounded by the evangelist symbols. Slidredomen has a unique altar chalice which is still in use, and which was probably made during the period 1325-1350. Salomon, the bishop of Oslo from 1322-1351, was the vicar of Slidre in 1298. He donated the chalice to his old church as a thank you for surviving the Black Death in 1350. The altarpiece, pulpit and choir partition were painted in 1797 and 1798. In the olden days, Slidredomen had "12 bells ringing in perfect harmony". Today the church has 4 bells in the turret and two bells in the belfry. The belfry is dated 1679 and 1798. Opening hours 2016: 02. July – 14. August Wednesday and Saturday 11AM-5PM There's no guiding, but a church guard who can give inormation and hand out brochures. The admittance is free, but visitors are welcome to donate to the church.

    Høre Stavkirke

    Høre Stave Church

An unusual runic insription shows that Høre Stave Church dates back to around 1179. However, as the oldest coin found under the church floor is from around 1100, it must have replaced a smaller sized church. An extension was built in 1822, and today it serves the community as a regular parish church. The story behind the runic inscriptions found in the pulpit is exiting. According to legend, King Sverre passed through Valdres in 1177 on the run from Magnus Erlingsson. Elling, the Kvie Lendmann (feudatory), had joined King Sverre in his fight agains King Magnus and his father the Earl Erling Skakke. When Erling fell in the battle at Kalvskinnet in Nidaros (Trondheim), Elling and his brother Audun decided to build Høre Stave Church as the runic inscriptions show: "In the summer of which the brothers Elling and Audun cut (timber) to this church, Erling (fell) in Nidaros." Høre Stave Church is rich in dragon and lion wood carvings from the Middle Ages, and among these are two beautiful portals. What used to be the ridge turret, is today the entrance of the graveyard. Gyda from Kvie, the church`s neighbouring farm, vas the daughter of the petty king Eirik of Hordaland. She was the one who prompted Harald Hårfagre to unite Norway into one kingdom towards the end of the 800s. Brought up at Kvie, a manor farm in Valdres, she made Harald promise not to cut his hair or shave until he had united the country. Initially, she turned down the king`s proposal of marriage, but when he had done what she asked, Gyda married King Harald. Opening hours 2017: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 18. June - 20. August 11am-5pm (18. - 20. August 11am-9pm) Admission (incl. guiding) - payment by cash only: Adults NOK 60,- Childre under 16 years free of charge No student or senior discounts. Beito Husky Tours - Langsua Husky Traverse - 4 days expedition

The stunning wilderness of Langsua National Park holds both rough alpine terrain and lower vast areas of boreal forest and thousands of lakes and streams. The National park and the protected areas surrounding it summons up to more than 1000 km2! These settings provide us with the perfect arena for long mid-winter dog sledding tours. During this expedition we are travelling through and along the protected areas of the park. On departure morning we'll make a thorough first and last check of all the equipment for our adventure. When ready we head towards Langsua National Park. With the huskies help we travel in the pace of nature as we climb towards Skredalen and Langsukollen. In the national park, pure and unspoiled nature awaits us. Tracks of fox, moose, lynx, wolverine and reindeer are likely to be seen, as well as a rare glimpse of the animals themselves. In this vast and secluded wilderness distance between cabins and shelters are huge. We sleep in comfortable tents with high standard equipment. Daily progress is from 25 – 45 km. We travel as a team. Each participant is responsible for him/herself, his/her dogs, the sled and equipment. The dogs are not machines as they need caretaking and contact. You are likely to get one or many new best friends! Optional: In addition to the tour, we recommend you to book one extra night in our Husky Camp the day before the tour and even book a day activity with our huskies. This way, you will get the chance to acclimate to the Norwegian winter conditions before heading out for the tour. If you would like higher comfort, we can also book you in a charming hotel or Mountain Lodge in the area, with great food and service. After the tour, it might also be nice for you to spend an extra day visiting this beautiful area, with a wide offer of activities and things to do, such as cross-country, ice fishing, snowshoe safari or downhill skiing.

The Besseggen Ridge in Jotunheimen

There is a reason for the Besseggen being one of the most popular mountain hikes in Norway. The spectacular panoramic view over Jotunheimen's peaks and the two lakes - the deep blue Bessvatnet and the turquoise Gjende - draws more than 60 000 hikers during the short season that lasts from late June to early September. Tour information: The 14 km long trail leads between the two DNT cabins Gjendesheim and Memurubu. It climbs/falls 1200 m in total and is quite demanding over its entire length, so you need to be in a good physical shape to hike it. The Besseggen ridge, approx. one kilometer long and 250 meters in elevation, is located midways along the trail. It involves some scrambling, and people sensitive to heights should mentally prepare for a challenge. For most people, it takes approx. 7-8 hrs to complete the hike. Parkering is at Reinsvangen, 1.5 km before Gjendesheim. From there, a shuttle takes the hikers to the trailhead and the boat (https://gjendepark.no). There’s a kiosk and toilets at Gjendeosen. Choice of route: The most popular way to hike the Besseggen is to take the boat from Gjendesheim to Memurubu and walk back. Many may experience the ridge easier to climb up than down, especially if one is afraid of heights. Another advantage is that you don’t have to rush in order to reach a boat. The disadvantages of this direction, however, are that there is no good way out in case you need to break and that you’re walking away from the view. The greatest advantage of hiking in the opposite direction, from Gjendesheim to Memurubu, is that you can start at any time and don't share the trail with a boat load of people. Early birds may even reach over the ridge before the meeting traffic starts. Later during the day when it gets crowded you may have to wait your turn at the narrowest passages. Plus, you don’t have to remember to turn around to take in the view. Should you be in doubt whether you can accomplish the Besseggen, we recommend that you start at Gjendesheim. That way you can turn around at any time and you can even walk to the viewpoint on top of the ridge and back without having to accomplish the ridge itself. This is also the best way to experience Besseggen outside the boat season. On the return, you can choose the trail towards Bessheim that exits on Veslefjellet and return to Gjendesheim on the trail from Glitterheim which you meet at Bessosen. This is a less steep and demanding return, but a little farther than the direct descend to Gjendesheim. Boat information Since most people take the boat in and walk back from Memurubu, the departures from Gjendesheim in the mornings tend to be more crowded than the afternoon departures from Memurubu. It is highly recommended that you book the boat trip in advance. For timetables, terms and booking, visit www.gjende.no The boat service runs daily from the middle of June to the middle of September and during the weekends before and after the season until the first week in October. In peak periods and weekends there are often extra departures, so check online before travelling. Equipment Remember to wear solid hiking shoes with profile soles. Bring warm and weatherproof clothing even in nice weather, enough food and drink for the entire hike and on warm summer days, a small towel and some swim wear for a refreshing dip in Lake Bessvatnet. Erosion The heavy traffic has left its toll on the trail, leading to erosion and destroyed vegetation. An enormous effort has been put into repairing the trail and revegetating the worst sections on both the Gjendesheim and the Memurubu side. Please keep on the trail when walking the Besseggen!

During periods without construction work (i.e. parts of the summer holidays) it may be accessible. The closure effects the section from the parking area at Hemsing bro to the stream Sauebekken. In times when the section is closed, it is possible to follow the western section from beyond Sauebekken to Syndrol in the centre of Vang and end the trip there. Enjoy the hike! Kongevegen over Filefjell
    Fagernes

    The King's Road Over Filefjell

A new use for an old route Kongevegen over Filefjell - The King’s Road across Filefjell - is a collaborative project involving the public and private sectors. It aims to teach people about the importance of the history of transport over Filefjell, and to support the creation of a 100 km long continuous cultural heritage path between Lærdalsøyri and Vang. The historic Royal Route is the theme for the project, but where it no longer exists or is unsuitable for hiking alternative paths are combined to a continuous route. However, Kongevegen over Filefjell also offers hikers a complete holiday experience that enlivens all of their senses. You can leave your cares behind as you walk along historic paths through spectacular scenery, and then enjoy good food and drink when you stop for the night. The joy of travelling slowly! Over the coming years, cultural heritage sites and other attractions will be developed, the forest and vegetation will be cleared, and sections of the road will be restored. Kongevegen over Filefjell is a valuable resource for the local community, offering fi ne walks in the local area and helping to attract tourists to the area. The route is part of the investment in tourism on both sides of the mountains, but it will also make it possible to upgrade, restore and maintain a piece of road engineering heritage of high national value. Great walking sections along Kings Road across Filefjell: Galdane – The dramatic Galdane along the River Lærdalselvi is today a lovely footpath. From Sjurhaugen to Seltun, approximately 4 km. It makes a great circuit with return via Seltunåsen. Vindhella – One of the most famous stretches of road in Norway. From Borgund stave church to Husum, approximately 2 km.

    Slidredomen
    Slidre

The view is simply breathtaking. There are a couple of resting areas (bench/cliff gallery) on the way. The name Via ferrata originates in Italy, where iron paths were constructed in the Dolomites under the First Word War to improve the accessibility of the mountains for the troops. The modern Via ferrata is a climbing path with iron steps and wires in steep rock faces. You don't need any former climbing experience, but you should be in reasonably good physical shape. Høre Stavkirke
    Ryfoss

    Bygdin Høifieldshotel

The traditional Bygdin Høifieldshotel is run by the Oxhovd/Svalesen family. The family's dream is to maintain the hotel's traditions, its very own charm and hospitality. Located directly at the foot of the Jotunheimen mountain range, you can enjoy nature all around you. Everyone is welcome, whether you wear hiking boots, ski shoes or high heels. We can arrange weddings, celebrations and company events. Summer Right outside our doorstep is the starting point of several hiking routes of various lengths and difficulties, as well as trails leading into Jotunheimen, connecting the hotel with the mountain cabins Torfinnsbu and Yksendalsbu. The hotel makes a perfect base for a number of 2000-meter-summits in the "Gjende-Alps", as the part of Jotunheimen between the Lakes Bygdin and Gjende is called. The boat from Bygdin to Torfinnsbu and Eidsbugarden runs several times a day. The most popular hikes around Bygdin are Synshorn, Bitihorn, Besseggen and Svartdalen. The hotel is located right along the Mjølkevegen cycling route that connects the Gudbrandsdalen, Valdres and Hallingdal regions, and is a Mjølkevegen accommodation. Winter During winter, the hotel is connected to the extensive cross country trail network of Beitostølen by several groomed trails. From mid-February to Easter, marked back-country skiing routes lead into Jotunheimen to Torfinnsbu, Yksendalsbu and over the high mountain plateau Valdresflye to Gjendesheim. Early and late in the season, when the road is open, Valdresflye usually has the first and last cross-country skiing trails in the country on natural snow. In mid-winter, the road up there is closed. How to find us Bygdin Høifieldshotel is located along road 51, the National Tourist Route Valdresflye, at the entrance of the Jotunheimen National Park. Distances are approx. 12 km to Beitostølen and 80 km to Vågå. The bus route Valdresekspressen has five daily departures from Oslo during high season in the summer. You can also pre-book transportation from Beitostølen to Bygdin during the winter season. History The hotel opened under the name Jotunheimen Turisthotell already in 1897. In the 1920s, the name was changed to Bygdin Høifjeldshotel. In the ladies' and men's lounges we have kept parts of the original interior from the 1930s. In 1925 the hotel was modernized and has since then undergone several extensions. The historical rooms are still kept in the original style, with a sink in the room, bathrobe and slippers in the wardrobe and shared facilities in the hallway, while the rooms from the 1960s have ensuite bathrooms. We look forward to welcoming you to the mountains - the real mountains!

It has a vibrant environment and is popular with avid hikers. Summit seekers and glacier hikers can also find exciting challenges in the area. Hike choices: There are many magnificent choices of hikes from Fondsbu and Eidsbugarden. The hike to the summit of Utsikten ("The vantage point") is recommended! Popular poet Aaamund Olavson Vinje (1818-1870) named the peak, as he did the Jotunheimen range. Utsikten was his favourite place at Eidsbugarden, with good reason, as the view from it is magnificent. In winter, there are staked routes in all directions from Fondsbu. Some of the routes are staked in February, when the lodge opens, and others are staked later in winter.

    Slidredomen
    Slidre

    Slidredomen
    Slidre
