Nearly one billion people in India are eligible to vote in the country's elections, making it not only the most populated country in the world, but also by far the largest democracy. India therefore has some unique challenges - and opportunities. At the same time, the Indian economy is growing quickly, there has been a dramatic reduction in poverty, and the use of energy is going up. As its economy keeps growing, should we expect a rise in the climate gas emissions as well? Or will India prove to be an example of so called "leapfrogging", where a developing economy skips the expected step of widespread use of fossil fuels for a growing middle class, and instead goes straight to depending on renewable energy sources? India's use of both solar power and wind power could be a sign that it is building a more sustainable energy sector – but what about the use of coal, the growing agricultural and production sectors, and changing priorities in a more polarised world? Beiggja is the result of a spontaneous musical collaboration that emerged in the winter of 2024 and was captured on the quartet’s debut album Morning, released this summer on Hubro. During the winter hibernation, pianist Kjetil Mulelid, saxophonist Kika Sprangers, bassist Mats Eilertsen and drummer Per Oddvar Johansen gathered in the latter’s home in Lommedalen. Everyone brought a few tunes and ideas, then they pressed the record button and let the interplay take shape. It turned out to be a beautiful first meeting, which grew into the recording of the album.

The Heiresses (original title in Spanish Las herederas) follows a couple of two middle-aged women as they venture financial stress, ultimately leading one of them to enter prison under fraud charges. But, in reality, it is a story about Chela, played by Ana Brun, and how she overcomes economic and emotional turmoil to learn a new way of being herself in the world. The Heiresses is deeply intimate, yet political, and focuses on the stories that we are used to seeing relegated to a secondary role. Why are Chela and Chiquita (Chela's partner) so in debt? How is Chiquita doing during her incarceration? How have they managed a thirty-year long relationship in an environment where they are afraid to openly show their love? Well, Marcelo Martinessi's film will not give you an answer. But what makes this story so valuable, is that we don't need to know. The Heiresses premiered in the Berlin International Film Festival and was chosen to represent Paraguay for the Best International Feature Film category in the Academy Awards. Most importantly, the whole crew and their story, widely acclaimed for giving visibility to the LGBTQ+ community, were declared Predilect (Honorary) Sons and Daughters of the City of Asunción, Paraguay.

Taming the Garden (2021) of Salomé Jashi opens with a shot of fishermen observing a cargo ship transporting an enormous tree along the coast of Black sea. The tree is headed towards a private botanical garden created and financed by a billionaire and former prime minister of Georgia. The pace of the ship, as well as the pace of the whole film, is slow, almost glacial. It echoes the imperceptible, yet unrelenting, pace of changes resulting from the damage done to the landscape from which the tree has been uprooted, and to the people living in this landscape. The private garden to which the tree is heading to is almost of a mythical nature hinting at many stories revolving around the disdainful creation of a personal Garden of Eden at the expense of the universal Garden of Earth. Borrowing the title of Statues Also Die (1953), we can say that, devoid of its context and set in a different land, Trees Also Die.

As part of this year's collaboration with Cine Latino, a festival focusing on films made in Latin America, Bergen Filmklubb presents you with the European premiere of Notes on an Exile. The documentary follows a Brazilian-Palestinian family in the West Bank. The footage originally shot in 2018 is revisited again after the events of October 7, 2023. What was supposed to be a film about the possibilities of coexistence in an occupied land turns into a brutal reflection on colonization, apartheid, genocide, and the recent proliferation of images of war, produced by the very victims of a massacre that repeats itself over time.

His sets are immersive journeys through the genre's full spectrum, always loaded with dubplates, unreleased cuts, and future classics. Beyond his solo work, he also explores deeper collaborations as one half of Midnight Sons alongside Christian Champagne, pushing the boundaries of contemporary D&B while staying rooted in the genre's essence. In 1901, the composer Alexander von Zemlinsky was enjoying a passionate love affair with fellow composer Alma Werfel. But Alma abruptly broke the relationship off to marry Zemlinsky’s peer, Gustav Mahler. Zemlinsky was destroyed. Alma’s decision to leave him for a composer of higher standing was almost more than he could take. Zemlinsky channeled his heartbreak into an orchestral work that would become his masterpiece. In Die Seejungfrau, the composer borrowed a famous story from Hans Christian Andersen concerning a mermaid’s love for a human prince who could never love her back. The score, for enormous orchestra, creates what musicologist Mark Morris has referred to as ‘kaleidoscopes of sound…akin to the constant shifting of dreams’. It embraces the luscious Romantic language of Richard Strauss and early Schoenberg with the declamatory passion and pain of Mahler’s own music. Axel Kober conducts it here, after Strauss’s poignant Oboe Concerto performed by Bergen’s own Principal Oboe Boris Fatulaev and more evocative music born of the ocean, Britten’s Four Sea Interludes.

Een ferry neemt je van Hirtshals in Denemarken naar Bergen.
Tussen Stavanger en Bergen kun je ook met de ferry reizen.
Bergen is een haven waar de kustsnelboot Hurtigruten rechtsomkeer maakt. Dit schip vaart tot Kirkenes in de buurt van de Russische grens in het noorden.

Met het vliegtuig
Bergen Airport is de regionale luchthaven voor grote delen van Fjord-Noorwegen. Er zijn rechtstreekse diensten van Bergen naar veel buitenlandse steden en alle grootste steden en gemeentes in Noorwegen.
Vanaf de luchthaven brengen shuttlebussen en de Bergen Light Rail je op een half uurtje naar het centrum van Bergen.

Met de auto
Reis je vanuit Oslo, dan kun je door het bergplateau Hardangervidda, Haukeli, of Hemsedalsfjellet rijden (7 tot 8,5 uur).
Kom je vanuit het zuiden noordwaarts, rijd dan langs de kust en steek de fjorden over met een ferry of via een brug. Houd er rekening mee dat er wachtrijen kunnen voorkomen voor de veerboten, dus vroeg zijn is zeker aan te raden.
