Jazzpotet - Lørdag 29 august 2026
A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO WHAT JAZZ:POTET IS FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE NEW: Even though we are a very small jazz club, we have received praise for our unique concept both at home and abroad, in the media and more, due to our own approach to running a jazz club. We are the jazz club that does not book bands, but bandleaders who are given the freedom to put together whatever they want. This always creates new sessions and music for both musicians and audiences. We will always invest in Bergen, but also have visitors from both Norway and abroad, sometimes also with International Sessions. As a Bergen jazz club we naturally take pride in this. And we are very happy to inspire other jazz clubs and concepts at home and abroad with our creativity. WE exist because you use us! Thank you so much Bergen and welcome to Jazz:potet 2025! Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra: Cavalleria Rusticana
In his final season as Principal Guest Conductor, Sir Mark Elder leads a performance of the most concise and emotive opera in the Italian verisimo tradition. Cavalleria Rusticana is a tale of obsession, jealousy and love turning lethal set to some of the most heartbreaking music composed for the opera stage. On Easter Morning in a Sicilian village, a local woman shunned by her community and abandoned by her lover faces a choice: expose her former love’s affair with a married woman risking a very public vengeance, or allow the sacred rituals to mask injustice and drown-out her cries? Having led English National Opera at its height in the 1990s, Sir Mark Elder continues to conduct the leading opera companies of the world including the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia where he has been Music Director since 2025. He has assembled a first-class cast led by Ekaterina Semenchuk’s Santuzza for this concert performance of Pietro Mascagni’s emotive one-act opera, a piece of music theatre that can set the blood racing like few others. - Bergen28.08.2026
Highasakite
Highasakite to Bergenhus Fortress in 2026 – one of the year’s most monumental concert experiences - at the outside arena Koengen at Bergenhus Fortress. Highasakite are back – bigger, darker and more uncompromising than ever. With their new chapter, Testament, Norway’s most intense live band raises their expression to new heights, delivering a sound that is massive, raw and unsettlingly beautiful. In 2026 they will take over Bergenhus Fortress, and everything points to an evening that will stay with you long after the final note has faded. - BoekenBergen06.09.2026
SKULKESKOLEN presents Khartoum (2025) with Q&A
For the final evening of SKULKESKOLEN, Bergen Kunsthall screens Khartoum (2025, 80 mins). Filmed on location with iPhones by four emerging Sudanese filmmakers - Anas Saeed, Rawia Al Hag, Brahim Snoopy and Timeea M. Ahmed - the film follows five residents of Khartoum as they search for survival and liberation in a city at war. Twelve year old Lokain and his best friend Wilson embark on a mission in Khartoum's rubbish dumps to buy two beautiful shirts. Khadmallah, a single mum and tea vendor, serves her daily clientele cardamom coffee and gossip whilst studying mathematics to realise her dream of starting a business. Jawad, a Sufi Rastafarian resistance volunteer rides a motorcycle and protests for a civilian government against the military and civil servant, and Majdi escapes office life by racing pigeons with his son. When filming began, war broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces militia, displacing over ten million people. The filmmakers and participants fled to East Africa mid-production, where they developed new ways of continuing the film from exile. Combining green screen reconstruction, restaging, and animation, Khartoum becomes both a record of displacement and an act of collective cinematic resistance. The film will be presented by artist and geographer Abdalla Eltayeb. This event is organised to raise funds for Sudan. 100% of the proceeds will be collected for Space Black, a London based design studio that explores alternative spatial futures for marginalised communities. If you cannot come to the screening but still want to contribute, you can donate via Bergen Kunsthall's vipps on #806376. Space Black is a British Sudanese team, whose communities are directly impacted by the violence that has erupted in Sudan since clashes broke out in April 2023 between the Rapid Support Forces and Sudanese Armed Forces. Despite calls for ceasefires, heavy fighting has continued across the country with civilians caught in the crossfire. Space Black are working directly with Randa Osman, an aid worker who runs the organisation Droup Alkair (Path of Goodness). Randa and her team of volunteers have been working on the ground for 5+ years to support families that are registered with the organisation based on their specific needs. The fundraiser covers medical bills, helps families pay rent, school fees, school uniforms and food banks. Abdalla Eltayeb is a cartographer, printmaker, and researcher based in Malmö. Working at the intersection of geospatial analysis and artistic practice, his work explores alternative forms of mapping rooted in memory, displacement, and Sudanese histories. Trained in GIS and daily engaged with maps in professional contexts, he is equally invested in challenging the authority of maps through imagining other forms of mapping. His recent projects use printmaking, archival fragments, and storytelling to trace erased journeys and to imagine otherwise geographies. As part of Another Sun – a curatorial programme on the poetics and politics of the subsurface – Bergen Kunsthall presents SKULKESKOLEN, a five-day collective study bringing together artists and researchers from 2–6 September 2026. Through workshops, field trips, screenings, performances, role-playing games and other participatory forms, the programme explores how inherited relations to land, geology and extraction might be reorganised. Participants include Abdalla Eltayeb, Anne Marie Deacy, Ase Brunborg Lie, Bassam Issa Al-Sabah and Jennifer Mehigan, Dylan Kerr, Eimear Walshe, Hanni Kamaly, Ina Hagen, Karina Sletten, Katarina Dorothea Isaksen, Kathryn Yusoff, Dr. Memory Biwa, Nolan Oswald Dennis, Olan Monk, Tom K. Kemp and others to be confirmed. SKULKESKOLEN is co-curated by Bergen Kunsthall Live Curator Jade Meili Barget and curator and professor Nora O' Murchú, developed with the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems at the University of Limerick. ——Access—— Bergen Kunsthall can be accessed from street level and has gender-neutral accessible toilet facilities. BLOXHAM TAPES @ BERGEN KJØTT: DAVID THOMAS BROUGHTON (UK/JP) & ROB NOYES (US/JP)
BLOXHAM TAPES @ BERGEN KJØTT: DAVID THOMAS BROUGHTON (UK/JP) - Celebrated Avant-folk troubadour known for his off-kilter and unpredictable live shows. ROB NOYES (US/JP) - American solo 12-string guitarist/composer in the tradition of Basho, Renbourn et al. Saturday 12. september Bergen Kjøtt Bar (1. etasje) Skutevikstorget 1, 5032 Bergen, Norway 20:00 Doors 20:30 Concerts start Tickets on the door: 200 kr / 150kr studenter (+ no-one turned away for lack of funds!) ................. Bloxham Tapes returns to Bergen Kjøtt with more experimental sounds for an unsound world! This time we are pleased to welcome two Tokyo-based musicians, David Thomas Broughton and Rob Noyes. DAVID THOMAS BROUGHTON Hailing from Otley, Yorkshire in the north of the UK, David Thomas Broughton has spent the last 20 years making music that intertwines beauty and discomfort, spanning solo projects and diverse collaborations and that seems designed to constantly keep us guessing as listeners. Broughton's live performances are known for their spontaneity and unpredictability, where Broughton continually reworks, dismantles and bends his music into new forms resulting in a show that blends intimacy, humour, improvisation and abstraction. His discography includes seminal one-take albums like his debut 'The Complete Guide to Insufficiency' and his collaboration with jazz-folk quartet 7 Hertz, 2010's 'Outbreeding' produced by Andy Ramsey (Stereolab), the feedback-laced 'UnAbleTo' cassette from 2013, and 2014's 'Sliding The Same Way' with vocal trio Juice. In 2016, he released the triple album opus 'Crippling Lack' where he collaborated remotely with various artists including Aidan Moffat, Beth Orton and Sam Amidon. Excitingly, a new album is on the horizon. This next release will be an improvised trio recording with acclaimed pianist Matthew Bourne and underground music's drum legend Neil Turpin. ROB NOYES Rob Noyes is an acclaimed composer and guitar player, originally from the Boston area, now residing in Tokyo, Japan. Starting in 2016, he established himself as a solo acoustic guitarist in the tradition of Robbie Basho, John Renbourn, Davey Graham, Michael Chapman, and Wizz Jones. Live Noyes is fierce, singular and genuinely breathtaking to watch. It is the kind of playing that lifts the spirits and reminds us of how exciting solo guitar can really be. In 2016, Rob released The Feudal Spirit on Boston's Poon Village label to wide acclaim featuring artwork by Raymond Pettibon. He followed that with the Arc Minutes LP on VDSQ. Rob has also released collaborations or split records with Joseph Allred, Alexander, Sam Moss, Ryan Lee Crosby, Greg Kelley, and Ayami Suzuki. ---<3--- ACCESS Bergen Kjøtt Bar (1. floor) has access from street level, welcomes service dogs and has toilet facilities available for all genders which are wheelchair accessible. Prøverommet på Bergen Internasjonale Kultursenter
Prøverommet is BIT's lively testing ground, where artists working in any medium present new works to a supportive audience. It has been running for 28 years and is as vital today as when it began in 1998 in Teatergarasjen. For the first Prøverommet of BIT's autumn season, we return to Bergen International Cultural Centre, established in 1993 as a multicultural meeting place for a wide range of organisations in the Hordaland region. Located on Kong Oscars gate, the building is home to a rare gem: Fensal, an early 20th-century ballroom. This will be the last Prøverommet outside Sentralbadet Scenekunsthus – BIT's new home. SKULKESKOLEN - What remains: a mindmapping and zine workshop, with Hanni Kamaly
Part of SKULKESKOLEN, 2–6 September 2026 Photography has long served as a technology of empire: the documentation of colonised landscapes and people has helped produce and reinforce limited ways of seeing and understanding their existence. In their practice, Hanni Kamaly intervenes into the photographic archive to counter its logic, questioning processes of dehumanisation and the rendering of land. In connection with their exhibition and yet what remains of former times, Kamaly invites participants to a printing workshop exploring associative narratives and mindmapping as tools for working with and against archives, memory, and narrative. Drawing on archival material and historical sources, the artist will invite participants to examine how ideas of the Other are produced and sustained through language, image, and institutional structures. Working in a similar way, participants will use found and collected material to construct associative, personal and collective narratives. Participants are encouraged to explore the topic and archives of their choice. The workshop begins with an introduction to associative narrative techniques and mindmapping as methods for tracing connections between images, texts, and memory. Participants will then work hands-on, cutting and assembling from a shared collection of art magazines, books, personal archives and source material selected by Kamaly, alongside any images, texts, or objects they choose to bring. The resulting mindmaps will be assembled into a collectively produced zine and printed. This workshop is a collaboration with Pamflett. PRACTICAL INFORMATION Participation is free, with places limited to 15 participants on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants are warmly encouraged to bring their own images, texts, or objects of interest. BIOGRAPHY Hanni Kamaly (b. 1988, Norway) lives and works in Malmö, Sweden. Kamaly's work has been exhibited internationally at, among others, the Gothenburg International Biennial for Contemporary Art #13, Malmö Konsthall, the Sharjah Biennial (15th edition), the São Paulo Art Biennial (34th edition), the Luleå Biennial, and Accelerator, Stockholm. CREDITS The first edition of SKULKESKOLEN is co-curated by Jade Meili Barget and Nora O' Murchú and developed in partnership with the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems at the University of Limerick in Ireland. The programme is generously supported by Culture Ireland, as part of Cultúr 2026: Sharing Ireland's Culture, the culture programme for Ireland's Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2026, Fritt Ord, KORO, Kulturrådet/Arts Council Norway and Sparebanken Norge. - BoekenBergen13.09.2026
BAJAZZ: NABOEN MIN
Naboen Min welcomes young and old to a concert with a kick! Naboen Min is the band of children's book author and songwriter Vegard Markhus and producer/guitarist Bjørnar Sangolt. Many children have heard songs such as Male himlen blå, Gyli gyli gong gong and Rockesock. In autumn 2026 they are in the spotlight with a new record. The duo brings along the rest of the band, and promises a mix of old and new. Naboen min aims to get children singing, dancing, smiling and laughing. The music ranges from rock and pop to ballads, and you can also find inspiration from both reggae and country. In the lyrics you find both humour and seriousness. You get to hear about dancing body parts, jumping animals and people who need comfort. And if you want to learn some words in alien language, you have come to the right place. The band has previously released the records "Rockesock" and "Alt blir feil". The music is played frequently on Radio Super. For the record "Rockesock" the band received the Spellemannspris in the children's music category. Listen to the new record (released in late summer), as well as songs such as Male himlen blå, Gyli gyli gong gong and Rockesock, and join the party! Doors 13:30, concert starts 14:00 Bajazz is Bergen Jazzforum's own concert series for children and families with children. The target audience is from 2 to 10 years old, and aims to offer unique concert experiences unlike mass-produced children's entertainment, while promoting early recruitment into the music field. The musicians are professionals and place emphasis on open and musical communication with the child. Bajazz is an idealistic non-commercial venture run by Bergen Jazzforum. We have a limited number of tickets for holders of Bergen kommune's Aktivitetskort. Send an email to [email protected] for more information - BoekenBergen23.08.2026

In spring 2025 the band toured the United Kingdom and Ireland with intense and gripping concerts, and the performance at the Kilkenny Roots Festival was described by UNCUT’s Allan Jones as “an emotional exorcism”. Their second album, New Threats From The Soul, was released last summer to glowing reviews across the board. SKULKESKOLEN presents Olan Monk and Dylan Kerr (C.A.N.V.A.S) + guests
5 Sep, 21:00 Landmark Founded by Olan Monk and Lugh O'Neill, C.A.N.V.A.S. is an artist-run record label and performance platform that has, since 2018, brought together a dispersed community of musicians, performers and artists through live events, recordings and long-term collaborations. Conceived as a response to geographic distance and increasingly virtual forms of cultural exchange, it creates spaces for collective experimentation, sustaining practices that move between local traditions, experimental sound and contemporary performance. For SKULKESKOLEN, C.A.N.V.A.S. presents performances by Olan Monk and Dylan Kerr. Dylan Kerr presents Substratum, a 40-minute composition for voice and fixed electronics drawing inspiration from the Hindustani Dhrupad tradition. The work explores how the voice, in dialogue with sine and sawtooth waves tuned in just intonation, generates psychoacoustic effects. As the electronics gradually increase in density, the voice dissolves into a field of interference patterns and combination-tone harmonies, forming a dense, pulsating mass that recalls, in the artist's words, the sensation of being slowly subsumed in the vibrations beneath the surface of the earth. Olan Monk will perform music from Songs for Nothing, their latest album released on AD 93 in November 2025. This fragmentary record was written upon their return to live in Conamara, on the west coast of Ireland, and veers between collaged pop, machinic rock and slow airs, imbued with the influence of sean-nós singing; Irish language songs in the 'old style' that often proclaim tales of love, loss and landscape. Songs for Nothing suggests a one-way transaction, an offering to the listener expecting nothing in return, but also a devotion to nothingness; and the realm of infinite possibility that springs from its well. The granite pulsates, the ocean and sky reflect intensities, seaweed rots on shingle shores, plants bloom, ancient trees come up for air from the drowned forest in the bay, the sun splinters through the low clouds. Heavy guitar drones, voice and tin whistle entangle with recordings of drums, strings, woodwind and harp, entwining a love of song traditions with a long-standing alienation from the language and culture of the land. Olan Monk is a musician, performer and writer from Cois Fharraige in Conamara, Ireland. Their practice involves experimental and popular songwriting, performing as a solo act and in collaboration with other musicians, including recordings and performances with Actress, Ashley Paul, Elvin Brandhi, James K, Maria Somerville, Michael Speers, Moin, Princ€ss and Shampain. They co-founded C.A.N.V.A.S. with Lugh O'Neill as an events series and record label, established in 2018 to give collective agency to an increasingly dispersed community of artists. Past releases include Love/Dead (2020) and Auto Life (2021) on C.A.N.V.A.S. and Dubplate 08 (2022) on AD 93. They contributed the single 'Surf' to Scenic Route's The Road Less Travelled Vol. 2 compilation (2024) and feature on the single 'Guess It's Wrecked' from Moin's third album You Never End (2024), released on AD 93. In 2025, they released Songs for Nothing, their second LP and AD 93 label debut. The album is a collection of songs and instrumentals that veers between collaged pop, machinic rock and slow airs; featuring contributions from Maria Somerville, Risteárd Ó'hAodha (of Princ€ss), Peadar Tom Mercier (of Trá Pháidín), Aindriú de Buitléir, Róisín Berkeley, Michael Speers and Dylan Kerr. Past performances include appearances at Rewire, The Hague; Aiséirí in Leisureland, Galway; National Concert Hall, Dublin; the Sonic Arts Research Centre, Belfast; cafe OTO, London; Barbican Hall, London; Institute for Contemporary Art, London; PAF Olomouc; EOS crossings, Frankfurt and throughout Ireland, England and continental Europe. They are currently touring as a solo performer and with collaborating performers in ever-evolving arrangements of songs from their catalogue. Dylan Kerr is an artist and vocalist working across performance, sound, photography, installation, moving image and composition. Their practice is deeply attuned to place and often begins with the histories and unique resonant qualities of the sites they engage with. In their compositions, they combine process-based methods, microtonality, and extended vocal techniques to explore psychoacoustic phenomena such as beating, interference patterns, and the interplay between the voice and space. Recent works include Caoineadh an Chóibh, a 24-hour durational work at the Sirius Arts Centre, Cobh, Ireland (2025), reflecting on Cobh's history as a departure point for those displaced by colonisation, and Solo for Breath (2025), exploring the timbral and spectral qualities of breath through extended techniques. As part of Another Sun –a curatorial programme on the poetics and politics of the subsurface– Bergen Kunsthall presents SKULKESKOLEN, a collective study bringing together artists and researchers from 2–6 September 2026. Konsert med Pilgrim og Blått Blod
Pilgrim: Pilgrim is one of Norway's most up-and-coming live bands, known for energetic concerts, powerful lyrics and a completely distinctive atmosphere on stage. Inspired by the 720 kilometre pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, Pilgrim creates a mystical and spiritual expression where rock, folk, hip hop and jazz melt together. The result is a unique concert experience filled with plenty of energy, danceable rhythms and sing-alongs from start to finish. Blått Blod: With a razor-sharp blend of 70s hard rock and Scandinavian rock from the 90s and 2000s, Blått Blod offers both shamelessly catchy songs, an explosive live show and an attitude you will only find in Bergen people. - BoekenBergen25.08.2026
Otis Gibbs (US)
Otis Gibbs is finally back - and on 25 August he comes to Lille Ole Bull! After many years of absence and countless questions it is finally confirmed: Otis Gibbs returns and on 25 August he comes to Lille Ole Bull. The singer and songwriter from Wanamaker, Indiana, has long had a dedicated audience at home, and the reunion has been missed. Otis Gibbs is far more than a traditional songwriter. In addition to the music he has found success as a visual artist, podcast host and programme creator. The podcast Thanks For Giving A Damn quickly became a favourite and led further to the Pandora series Country Built, which today reaches millions of listeners. He has also built up a strong presence on YouTube. Musically Otis Gibbs is rooted in the American storytelling tradition, with roots in artists such as Woody Guthrie, Joe Hill and Bruce Springsteen. He sings about people and stories from a working, unfinished America – seen from a consistent underdog perspective. His lyrics are about work, travel, longing and the realities of life, conveyed with honesty and warmth. With a dozen albums behind him, and the critically acclaimed release The Trust of Crows as his latest, Otis Gibbs is a rare and authentic voice. That he now returns makes these concerts a truly special occasion. This concert is part of the concert series Bergen Live Sessions. - BoekenBergen22.08.2026
Ståle Kleiberg i samtale om Debussys musikk og poesi
About the conversation (The conversation will be held in Norwegian) In this conversation with composer and professor emeritus Ståle Kleiberg, we take a closer look at how French Symbolist poetry can serve as a gateway to understanding Debussy’s music. Debussy set to music many poems by the leading poets of his time, such as Stéphane Mallarmé, Charles Baudelaire, and Paul Verlaine. In these songs, poetry and music are closely intertwined. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Debussy does not use music to describe the literal content of the poetry. The aim is not to realistically “depict,” for example, a forest. In Debussy’s own words, the mysteries of the forest cannot be revealed by measuring the height of the trees. Rather than portraying the forest itself in his music, Debussy uses musical symbols to convey a person’s response to being in the forest. With this, he ushered in a new chapter in music history. Which techniques does Debussy use to achieve this? What are these musical symbols? These questions will be the focus of a conversation that takes us inside Debussy’s music and the poetry he set to music. The conversation can be combined with a concert of Debussy’s songs immediately following the talk. Find tickets and more information in our calendar. About the participants Ståle Kleiberg is a central Norwegian composer with significant international recognition. His music is frequently performed both in Norway and abroad, and most of his works have been commissioned by leading orchestras, ensembles, and performers. Numerous recordings of Kleiberg’s music have been released, receiving outstanding international reviews and several Grammy nominations. Kleiberg’s music is characterized by a personal and distinctive form of extended tonality and by a meticulous approach to timbral detail. This is particularly evident in his orchestral output, which includes three symphonies, symphonic poems, and a number of solo concertos. Kleiberg is professor emeritus of musicology and composition at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim. Karina Valnumsen Hansen is Senior Curator of Music at the Kode Art Museums and Composer Homes. She holds a PhD in musicology from NTNU, focusing on politics and declamation practices in W. A. Mozart’s German operas. After completing her doctorate, she served as an associate professor in musicology at NTNU before beginning a postdoctoral position at the University of Heidelberg, Germany. Her research fields include music and politics, Mozart’s biography and music, 18th-century opera, Norwegian vocal music of the 19th century, and musical declamation practices in the 18th and 19th centuries. Classical Hour at 19:30, Grieghallen
In the winter of 1901, Sibelius was wracked with grief following the death of his youngest daughter. The composer sought refuge with his family in the relative warmth and clemency of Rapallo, Italy. There, Sibelius tried to take his mind off real life by writing a piece of orchestral music telling the story of the great philanderer Don Juan. But events couldn’t keep themselves out of Sibelius’s head, nor his music. What resulted was not a piece about Don Juan, but Sibelius’s great symphony of uprising in which a noodling three-note theme powers a musical journey culminating in an overwhelming climax. When the symphony was first performed in Helsinki the following year, just about every Finn heard the music not so much as an expression of personal hope and renewal as a rallying cry against Russian occupation. Here, the symphony that has become Sibelius’s signature work is deconstructed and contextualized by a conductor who has long made it her own, our Chief Conductor Designate, Tabita Berglund. - BoekenBergen04.09.2026 - 05.09.2026
SKULKESKOLEN presents The Fifth Fire by Tom K. Kemp
Fire has gone on strike. Until a new agreement between people and fire is reached, nothing burns: no fossil fuels, no wildfires, no factories, no cigarettes. The Fifth Fire is a participatory role-playing game for 6–20 players who take on the roles of fire, human negotiators, and the world itself, collectively imagining the consequences of the strike, the demands of fire, and the terms of any new agreement. Every session is a political simulation, producing a different, post-strike version world. Two public sessions will run during SKULKESKOLEN, each lasting approximately half a day and open to public registration.. Bringing together general participants, invited guests, regional specialists, and programme contributors, each session creates a temporary collective of up to 20 players, ensuring a diversity of perspectives and experiences. Using simple lo-fi, low-tech mechanics, the game is accessible to anyone aged 12 and up, regardless of prior experience. At its core, The Fifth Fire asks what kind of relationship humans have built with fire, and what it might mean to renegotiate that relationship entirely. Framing fire simultaneously as a geologic force, a colonial technology, a metabolic process, and a condition of extraction, the game invites participants to collectively reimagine Bergen's history of fires, as well as its relationship to the petrochemical industry and the forms of life around it. Tom K. Kemp is a British artist who employs roleplaying game design, animation and filmmaking to tell collaborative stories about complexity and the humans who constitute it. Working through the roleplaying game form to combine political simulation and speculative analysis into semi-improvised group storytelling, participants are invited to parse systems, complicate common narratives, and synthesise an array of knowledge into plot, dialogue, diagram and performance. The Fifth Fire is Tom's fifth roleplaying game, and is currently on a playtesting tour around the US and Europe before being formally published later this year. He is currently developing it at the CAPC Bordeaux as part of Fluxus Magnetic Residencies. Tom has previously worked with the EYE Filmmuseum, Amsterdam, La Casa Encendida, Madrid, the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg, La Ferme du Buisson, Noisiel, CAPC Bordeaux, and QUAD, Derby. Residencies include Cité des Arts International, Paris, Triangle-Astérides, Marseille, and Rupert, Vilnius.
